Apple Rolling Out First AirTag Firmware Update in Months

Apple is rolling out its first AirTag firmware update in almost a year, but it's unclear what it does.

As Macworld reports, this "mystery" AirTag update is version 2.0.61, build number 2A61, and it should roll out over the next four weeks. The previous update—2.0.36—resolved an issue with the accelerometer not activating in some situations, according to Apple's support website. Prior to that, AirTags got a beefier upgrade with the rollout of Precision Finding, which helped locate an unknown AirTag detected moving with you.

The new firmware update hasn't been posted to the support site yet, so we don't know exactly what this is adding or fixing. It could be an all-new feature or just a smaller bug fix.

As Macworld notes, AirTag updates tend to roll out gradaully, with 1% of users getting it yesterday, 10% of users on Nov. 7, 25% of users on Nov. 14, and everybody else on Nov. 28. So far, there are no reports of any new features or noticeable changes.

There is currently no way to force the update, so owners will just have to wait until the update rolls out to them. They can ensure they get the update as soon as possible by keeping their AirTags within range of their iPhone.

To check if your AirTag is updated, open the Find My app, tap the Items tab, and then your AirTag. On the next screen, tap the name of the AirTag you wish to check. It should show you the firmware version and serial number.
