Bills GM Brandon Beane has since refuted the notion that star wideout Stefon Diggs asked for a trade this offseason.
Trouble in paradise? Nope, says Bills general manager Brandon Beane. Nothing to see here.
Back in June, some rumors started spreading about whether star wide receiver Stefon Diggs wanted out of Buffalo. The recipe for such a rumor requires few ingredients: one, Diggs made some cryptic posts on social media, and two, coach Sean McDermott said he was "very concerned" that Diggs hadn't reported to mandatory minicamp at the time.
Diggs has since stayed put in Buffalo and, to this day, has never outright said he wanted to be traded. Quarterback Josh Allen blamed the media for blowing things out of proportion, and slowly, week after week, the Diggs trade drama started to disappear back into the woodwork.
Bills GM Brandon Beane wanted to make sure it stayed in the woodwork with his most recent comments on Diggs' situation.
In an interview with Pat McAfee, Beane confirmed that no NFL team had called him about a potential trade for Diggs, and Diggs himself never asked to be traded.
Beane said:
"It truly was never an issue, it was just more us getting in a room and talking through how last season finished and getting on the same page."
Bills GM Brandon Beane sets record straight on Stefon Diggs trade drama
It's certainly hard to imagine Stefon Diggs forcing his way out of Buffalo given the presence of a top-five quarterback and a top-ten defense, along with the steady hand of Sean McDermott.
The Bills' leader in yards and targets for the last three seasons may have a small gripe about the Bills' inability to make it far into the playoffs, but even he must know Allen is the kind of quarterback that can change a franchise's fortune in the blink of an eye.
Like a few other AFC teams, the Bills' Super Bowl window is right now, with both Allen and Diggs enjoying the prime of their careers. Losing in the divisional round to the Bengals last postseason was a major reality check for the Bills, who received a message along the lines of "Don't get too cocky."
As long as Allen is under center, the Bills will always have a fighting chance to win a ring. And barring a catastrophic meltdown, the team's second most valuable player, Stefon Diggs, will serve as Allen's trusty sidekick for the foreseeable future.
