'Buried a hatchet': Sammy Hagar says it was 'very important' to make up with Eddie Van Halen before his death

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Sammy Hagar shared the method he used to fix differences with Eddie Van Halen before the latter passed away in 2020. In a recent interview, the artist had a conversation with him over text before Eddie died in October 2020. "Well, to be able to have talked to Eddie and had a wonderful rapport with him on text, it means everything to me," Hagar said.

During an interview, he told Fox News, "If he would have died and we would have not ever said 'I love you' to each other again, I would feel really bad. I probably wouldn't be able to talk… I wouldn't be able to talk to you about it." The 75-year-old guitarist further said it "means a lot" that he's able to "feel good about talking about being in Van Halen now. 'Cause I feel like we buried a hatchet. To where otherwise I'd be saying, 'Well, those guys…' 'Cause I was mad, I was hurt."It's very important that we connected, yeah."

'I cherish him more than ever'

The two became bandmates first in 1985 when Hagar filled in for vocalist David Lee Roth. However, Hagar went his own way in 1996 but reunited with them on The Best of Both Worlds tour in 2004. Once leaving, Hagar took several shots at Eddie, but in one of the interviews told USA Today recently, “I cherish him more than ever. What happened to us at the end was such a shame. It’s what happens when alcohol and drugs are involved, and I'm going through a divorce. It's such a shame. If Van Halen were still together today, we'd be headlining every one of these festivals all over the world.” During the online interview, he further told the interviewer, “The peak of my musical life was Van Halen,” says Hagar of his 1985 to 1996 run in what is now dubbed Van Hagar.

'Give me his f*****g number'

“My ego wants to say I was doing great as a solo artist. Well, yeah, I was doing fine, but Van Halen was some other thing man. It was a four-headed monster, and I miss Ed dearly,” added the artist. He told Fox News, it was their mutual friend George Lopez who got them back, "George is a dear friend and he was Eddie’s friend and he said, 'Sammy, Eddie’s in bad shape, he loves you brother, you need to reach out.' I said, 'Give me his f*****g number and I’ll make sure I call him,'" Hagar revealed.
