Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy's comments about this potential breakout star will only hype up fans ahead of the 2023 season.
The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for another Super Bowl title defense after they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 this past February. They did so without a star No. 1 wide receiver, as they traded away Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. Now, they are without JuJu Smith-Schuster, who signed a multi-year deal with the New England Patriots this offseason. So, the current corps of wide receivers in training camp will have to step up, much like they did last year.
After training camp practice on Wednesday, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy expressed his confidence in the abilities of second-year wide receiver Skyy Moore and revealed that he will get more playing time.
"I think [he's shown] growth within the system of being able to play fast because he knows where to go," said Nagy, h/t ProFootballTalk. "He's had the talent, last year just learning the offense and now being able to transition to playing faster. Now he'll get more opportunities and I think he'll do well."
Chiefs: Matt Nagy hypes up Skyy Moore as a breakout candidate
The Chiefs used their second-round draft pick in 2022 on Moore, a wide receiver out of Western Michigan. Through his three years in college, Moore picked up 171 receptions for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Moore didn't get much playing time throughout his rookie season, as Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Justin Watson received the most snaps out of all of the wide receivers on the roster. Moore had 313 snaps, 27.24 percent of the team's total. In 16 regular season games played, Moore caught 22-of-33 targets for 250 yards.
In the biggest moment of his young career, Moore scored his first career touchdown in Super Bowl 57, a four-yard reception on a throw from quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This touchdown helped extend Kansas City's lead to 35-27 over Philadelphia.
The opportunities are arriving early for Moore, as he is listed as a first-team wide receiver alongside Valdes-Scantling on the team's depth chart before their preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Aug. 13.
