Cowboys immediately replace recently-arrested WR

The Cowboys have acted quickly following the arrest of wide receiver Antonio Callaway, choosing to drop Callaway and sign a new outside target instead.

Antonio Callaway, who was signed to the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad last November, was recently arrested for driving with a suspended license.

The former Browns wideout was arrested in Miami this past weekend and his future NFL career could be in jeopardy.

Callaway barely made an impact during his time in Dallas and seemed more than expendable to the franchise; immediately following his arrest, the Cowboys signed wideout Tyron Johnson to the roster.

This offseason, Callaway had been competing for a coveted wide receiver spot to serve as depth behind the likes of CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Michael Gallup. Now, Johnson will get his deserved shot to make it to the final 53-man roster.

Cowboys drop Antonio Callaway and bring on Tyron Johnson

Johnson was one of three wideouts the Cowboys have worked out recently. Dallas also brought in N'Keal Harry and Lynn Bowden for a tryout earlier this week, not to mention the team's plethora of undrafted free agent wideouts who will be tossing their hat in the ring this offseason, too.

Callaway's spot shouldn't be hard to replace as he hasn't played a snap in the last two years, and his best season was his rookie campaign when he recorded 43 catches for 586 yards in 2018.

Compared to Callaway, Johnson has more recent playing experience, albeit he arguably hasn't grown into a reliable target just yet. The 26-year-old has bounced around on different teams with his longest stint being on the Los Angeles Chargers, when he recorded 20 catches for 398 yards in 2020.

The backend of teams' depth charts are usually reserved for rookies and developmental players, but once in a while, a hidden gem can come along and have a surprisingly positive influence on the rest of the team.

Is Tyron Johnson the Cowboys' hidden gem? These next few months of offseason workouts should paint a clearer picture.
