The Buccaneers' quarterback competition is a joke. And the only thing that would make it more funny is adding a free-agent veteran like Carson Wentz.
The Buccaneers are the runaway winners of the "least-inspiring quarterback battle" award for 2023 and there's one obvious quarterback option that could take the competition to new levels of hilarity.
Carson Wentz, please, please, pretty please, come on down.
Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask are currently locked in a battle for the starting job in Tampa. Trask was an interception machine during minicamp. Now Mayfield is following suit with seven interceptions in nine practices, according to Greg Auman.
Tampa Bay can't go back in time and draft Stetson Bennett IV, so what else can they do?
Can you imagine if the Bucs introduced Wentz into that mess?
It's already painfully entertaining to have Mayfield and Trask trying to climb out of the mud. The Wentz dynamic would only spice things up.
Bucs QB battle isn't going very well
Along with Mayfield and Trask, the Bucs have John Wofford on the roster at quarterback. But the competition is clearly between the other two.
Trask has come along during training camp, clearly making better decisions than Mayfield by limiting his turnovers. But there are still valid questions about whether he has the arm or playmaking ability to warrant a QB1 spot in the NFL this season. Protecting the football is essential for a quarterback. It's just not the only thing.
Mayfield impressed at the end of last season with the Rams, but throwing interceptions at the rate he has in practice so far is far from encouraging. Protecting the football may not be the only thing, but it's a big damn thing.
Wentz is a bit of a joke suggestion, but would he really be a worse option than Mayfield or Trask at this point?
