LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Everyone loves watching ‘The Simpsons’ to unwind a little or have a good laugh from time to time. The show has been running for decades, and sometimes it has eerily predicted events that have actually happened. While the animated sitcom is known for its crass comedy and punchlines, these predictions haven’t gone unnoticed, and the most recent prediction has to do with the ongoing Titanic submersible incident.
The Titanic submersible, which has recently gone missing with passengers onboard, has become the talk of the town. Everyone has something to say about this particular event, but what if ‘The Simpsons’ had predicted this long ago? Back in January 2006, this animated comedy had an episode that was eerily familiar to the incident. Did ‘The Simpsons’ predict the missing Titanic submersible incident?
‘The Simpsons’ versus reality
The episode in question that predicted the incident is Season 17 Episode 10, titled, ‘Homer's Paternity Coot'. In this particular episode, Homer is on a quest to find his biological father, when he lands on the doorstep of Mason Fairbanks. Although Homer pretends to be a reporter, it doesn’t take him long to reveal that he believes Fairbanks is his father. Much to Homer’s surprise, Fairbanks is delighted and takes the Simpson family on his ship, telling them about the treasure of Piso Mojado. As the episode progresses, and a DNA test later, Homer is thrilled to find out that Fairbanks really is his father.
Now, Fairbanks takes this opportunity to take Homer down underwater, which is when things start resembling the ongoing Titanic submersible incident. Homer and Fairbanks are both underwater in two individual submarines looking for the treasure. However, it doesn’t take long before tragedy strikes and they get separated. Homer’s submersible gets stuck as he tries to look for Fairbanks’ missing submersible, just as everyone is looking for the missing Titanic submersible at this moment. The wreckage underwater has some similarities too! The episode ends with Abe confirming that he had switched the DNA test, and Homer and Abe have a sweet moment after Homer spent some time in a coma. Homer had a happy ending, but will that stand true for the missing Titanic submersible? For those of you wondering, Fairbanks survived too!
'How is this even possible'
A Tweet went viral when someone shared images of the episode and said, “What do you mean the Simpsons predicted the Titanic submarine incident.” Of course, the internet had a lot to say about this possibility as one tweet read, “How is this even possible???” Another read, “We need to investigate the writers of the show because this is getting out of hand man.” The internet was also curious to know if ‘The Simpsons’ had any more predictions up their sleeves as a person wrote, “Wonder what they’ll predict next.”
Netizens were convinced ‘The Simpsons’ predicted this event as one tweet read, “As my gen-z daughter would say "I'm shook" that they did it again. #titanicsubmersible #simpsons #genzie.” Another penned, “They always predict everything so accurately. It’s scary!” One Twitter user truly sums up the emotions people are feeling as they draw the parallels between ‘The Simpsons’ and the missing Titanic submersible as they wrote, "I REFUSE to believe the Simpson writers are not time travelers !!!!!!!”
Not a first for ‘The Simpsons’
As we mentioned earlier, this wouldn’t be the first time ‘The Simpsons’ has predicted an event this big that turned into world news. Season 5, Episode 19 of ‘The Simpsons’ had a small gag about serving horse meat. This episode was released back in 1994, whereas the infamous horse meat scandal in Tesco supermarket happened in 2013. Season 11 Episode 17, which released in the year 2000, had already predicted Donald Trump’s presidency, which of course didn’t happen until 16 years after that episode aired.
One of the biggest and scariest predictions that ‘The Simpsons’ ever had, was the Covid-19 pandemic. This particular episode was released in 1993 and had a similar virus to Covid called the Osaka Flu. In fact, few details of Season 4 Episode 21 were eerily similar to what the world went through during the pandemic in 2019. Looks like it’s time for the producers to release a new episode dedicated to the missing Titanic submersible.
