LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The ‘Extraction’ franchise is synonymous with action. In 2020, it delivered an action-packed experience, and in 2023, it surpasses expectations with even more adrenaline-fueled sequences. However, there’s one theme that is dabbled in when it comes to these movies, especially ‘Extraction 2’ and that is fatherhood. Initially, this connection might not be apparent, given the bloodshed, gunfights, and murders. Yet, upon closer examination, the theme of fatherhood emerges, and Chris Hemsworth does a phenomenal job with it.
The narrative establishes that Tyler Rake has experienced the loss of his son and the dissolution of his marriage. In 'Extraction 2,' we are introduced to his wife, Mia, who not only challenges Rake but also offers a sense of closure. Without Mia, it is doubtful that Rake would have embarked on this mission, given that the lives he must save are those of Mia's sister, niece, and nephew, who were once part of Rake's own family.
Mia and Rake’s reunion
If you're anticipating a heartfelt reunion and Mia leaping into Rake's arms, prepare for disappointment. 'Extraction 2' clearly establishes that romance is not on the cards for Rake, as his focus remains solely on his work. The initial encounter between Mia and Rake is icy, filled with tension and awkward silence. While Mia appreciates her ex-husband's aid in assisting her sister, she makes it unmistakably clear that she had no choice but to seek his help.
Throughout the entire ordeal, Rake grapples with the guilt of abandoning his son and Mia during their most challenging period. When Mia and Rake finally find a moment alone, she cannot help but confront him with the burning question that has haunted her for so long: Why did he leave? In this vulnerable exchange, Rake opens up to the viewers, revealing a more fragile side as he confesses that he departed because he felt powerless to fix the situation his son was facing. Although Mia and Rake's conversation is abruptly interrupted, the intensity of their emotions remains palpable.
Rake’s closure in ‘Extraction 2’
For a significant duration, Rake carried the belief that his son's last memory of him was witnessing his own father walking away. As the story approaches its conclusion, with both Nik and Rake imprisoned, an unexpected visitor arrives – Mia. Seizing the moment, Mia assures Rake that everyone is safe and expresses her gratitude towards him. However, she also imparts a crucial revelation: their son never saw Rake as an abandoner; instead, he admired his father for his courage and wanted to emulate him.
This poignant moment holds immense significance in Rake's life, and if you manage to keep tears at bay during this scene, you deserve accolades. Once again, the theme of fatherhood resonates powerfully in 'Extraction 2,' complementing the film's action-packed narrative.
