Fans speculate Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn's breakup timeline after Jack Antonoff reveals 'You're Losing Me' was made in 2021

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: As Taylor Swift announced the official release of 'From the Vault' track 'You're Losing Me' on streaming services, her longtime collaborator and close friend Jack Antonoff took to Instagram to reveal that the song was originally created in 2021.

"'You're Losing Me' is out today, a very special track from the Midnights sessions that’s finally streaming! Written and recorded at home on 12/5/21 after Taylor ate these raisins," Antonoff, who co-produced the song, wrote on his Instagram Story alongside a photo of Swift digging into raisins placed atop a kitchen counter.

Shortly after, the internet was abuzz with numerous theories about the timeline of Swift's breakup with former boyfriend Joe Alwyn, with several people believing that their relationship began crumbling back in 2021, two years before the duo officially parted ways.

Swifties share theories on Taylor Swift's 'You're Losing Me'

Following Antonoff's revelation that 'You're Losing Me' was originally written in 2021, Swifties took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their theories on the possible connection of the song with the alleged beginning of the end of Swift's relationship with Alwyn.

"So the relationship between Joe and Taylor was breaking down since 2021??" one internet user asked.

"I feel like They broke up in mid 2021 but than got back together in mid 2022 before Midnights ( They survived “The Great War”) but in January of 2023 They have broken up again," one replied.

"This hurts my heart. How long was she hurting over this? Renegade is so obviously about joe now that we see how clearly she was hurting. Joe alwyn when I catch you..," one fan wrote.

"Okay so now that we know the day You're Losing Me was written I need EVERYONE to finally agree that Midnights can be interpreted as the emotional process of slowly ending the relationship described in Renegade," another added.

"it breaks my heart to think that she wrote you’re losing me in 2021 and she stayed with him two more years. i usually don’t care about her boyfriends but joe alwyn get in front of me," a fifth wrote.

One Swiftie said, "I don't know with the story of the song and timing ... i don't see normal taylor here. SHE is BROKEN in this pic.."

While another mentioned, "I feel like she is broken in this pic. It's over my queen. Always be cheerful and happy with Travis."

One commented, "I actually feel sick knowing you’re losing me was written in 2021."

Before another said, "Taylor writing and recording ‘you’re losing me’ like a week before her birthday in 2021…oh that man better hide."

Several fans also theorized that Antonoff intentionally revealed the date when 'You're Losing Me' was created in order to hint at how Swift's relationship with Alwyn started crumbling nearly two years before the duo parted ways in 2023.

"Jack antonoff just spilled the biggest tea of the century and dipped. what do you mean you’re losing me was written in 2021?!?!?!?!" one said.

"You’re losing me was written in 2021?! jack really spilling piping hot tea," another added.

"Jack telling us you’re losing me was written in dec 2021 tells me that he, as one of taylor’s best friends, had been waiting for that breakup for a LONG time," one theorized.

"2021 oh Jack KNEW what he was doing spilling like that," one stated.

"Theres gotta be drama because jack would know how fast a date would become a problem. like 2021? a year before midnights? and nobody even knew about the breakup until after the tour started?" a fifth opined.

One said, "Jack knew what he was doing saying when they wrote that in december of 2021 when he had that man wearing his glasses like a lili photobooth in february 2023. WHY IS THIS SO DAMN FUNNY TO ME."

While another added, "Jack is the epitome of the best friend who knows EVERYTHING about his bestie's bf but can act like he knows nothing with no problem. Like I just KNOW he was waiting for the day it was over."

Why does 'Swifties' think Taylor Swift's issues with Joe Alwyn began back in 2021?

While Swift's split with longtime partner Alwyn earlier this year left several fans shocked and heartbroken, Swifties were convinced that the duo started facing problems in relationships back in 2021 after Antonoff revealed that the pop star wrote the song 'You're Losing Me' in 2021 even though it was released as a vault track in May.

At the time, several fans believed that Swift hinted towards the end of her relationship with Alwyn in the heartwrenching track, which talks about a relationship running its course.

"Do I throw out everything we built or keep it? / I’m getting tired even for a phoenix / Always rising from the ashes / Mending all her gashes / You might just have dealt the final blow," Swift sings in the pre-chorus.

"I can't find a pulse / My heart won't start anymore / For you / 'Cause you're losin' me," she belts out, adding, "How long could we be a sad song / 'Til we were too far gone to bring back to life? / I gave you all my best me's, my endless empathy."

Swift also delivers the most heartbreaking lines in the bridge of the song, saying, "I wouldn’t marry me either / A pathological people pleaser / Who only wanted you to see her."

She further croons, "And I’m fading thinking / Do something, babe, say something / Lose something, babe, risk something / Choose something, babe, I got nothing to believe, unless you’re choosing me."

While many fans were convinced Swift wrote the song in reference to her fading relationship with Alwyn, Antonoff's revelation about the timeline prompted several others to believe their relationship witnessed the rough patches back in 2021, two years before the pair officially called it quits in 2023.

Although the internet is full of speculation and theories surrounding the timeline of Swift and Alwyn's break-up, neither the pop star nor Antonoff has directly named or mentioned the subject of 'You're Losing Me.'
