A security guard is in a critical condition after being shot in the back of the head while attempting to break up a fight at a high school football game. Gunfire erupted just after 4pm on Saturday in a parking lot outside Thomas R. Proctor High School in Utica, the city’s police department said. Police said the game between Proctor High School and Binghamton High School was in its final moments when a fight broke out in the parking lot outside the stadium. Two security guards attempted to break up the fight, police said, before one was struck by a flying bullet. He was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. A 16-year-old boy was arrested following the shooting and charged with attempted murder. Police said the suspect is not a current student at Proctor High School, but is enrolled in an alternative educational program. The fight broke out after a security guard turned a group away from the varsity game just moments before the shooting, Utica police chief Mark Williams said. “He suspected that something wasn’t right with this group and he refused to lead into the stadium,” Mr Williams said. The stadium was fitted with metal detectors but the security guard turned the group away before he could be alerted to the firearm. Police believe a lone gunman was responsible for the shooting and have not established a motive, but said it may possibly be gang-related. An investigation is ongoing. School officials cancelled on-campus activities for Sunday and after-school activities on Monday, and said counselling would be available. It comes after 16-year-old was shot dead at an Oklahoma high school football game in August. A 15-year-old boy was arrested, who was not named because he is a juvenile. Choctaw police chief Kelly Marshall said the shooting followed an argument between two males at the game, but she didn’t know what the argument was about. A 15-year-old girl was wounded in the leg during the shooting, while a 42-year-old man was hospitalized in intensive care with a gunshot wound to the chest. OpenAI has launched a ChatGPT app for iPhone users amid a surge in fake versions of its hugely popular AI chatbot. The free app is the first official OpenAI product to appear in app stores, though dozens of imitation versions seeking to mislead or scam users are currently available for iOS and Android users. The new ChatGPT app is available immediately in the US and will roll out to other countries in the coming weeks, OpenAI said, with an Android version of the ChatGPT app also under development. “With the ChatGPT app for iOS, we’re taking another step towards our mission by transforming state-of-the-art research into useful tools that empower people, while continuously making them more accessible,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post detailing the new app. “We’re eager to see how you use the app. As we gather user feedback, we’re committed to continuous feature and safety improvements for ChatGPT.” Users who download the app will have access to their ChatGPT account history from the web, as well as access to OpenAI’s open-source speech-recognition system Whisper. This will allow people to speak to the artificial intelligence tool for the first time. Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus will also get access to the more advanced GPT-4 tool, as well as faster response times compared to free users. Police officers who scoured a reservoir in Portugal in the search for Madeleine McCann have hit a fresh roadblock in their investigation. A large section of the Barragem do Arade reservoir was cordoned off in May, about 30 miles from where three-year-old Madeleine went missing in Praia da Luz 16 years ago. It is believed that the main suspect in the case, convicted sex offender Christian Brueckner, regularly visited the reservoir’s peninsula and had described it as a “little slice of paradise”. But detectives searching the reservoir have now said there is “no compelling evidence” Madeleine is there, according to The Sun. Holes up to 2ft deep were dug up in the reservoir search, in the hope of unearthing clothing fibres, local media reported. But despite initial hope, German public prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters told newspaper Bild: “Please don’t expect too much”. It came after police reportedly received a tip off that Brueckner had visited the lake shortly after the three-year-old went missing in May 2007. Madeleine disappeared from the bed of her holiday apartment in a Praia da Luz resort while her parents dined 50m away. Her younger twin siblings were also in the apartment at the time but were left untouched. Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann, both doctors from Rothley, Leicestershire, have been searching for answers since. The Arade Dam is approximately 30km from the resort where the family was staying. Brueckner was first named in connection with the mystery in 2020 and officially made a suspect last year. His yellow and white VW T3 Westfalia campervan was reportedly spotted near the Praia da Luz resort around the time Madeleine vanished. He is currently in a German prison over the rape of an elderly woman in Praia da Luz in the 2000s.
