BBC News guest handles ‘amazing’ cat interruption like a pro
Those who criticise the BBC license fee may well have forgotten the fact that BBC News has provided us with some absolutely iconic gaffes and viral moments over the years – from Phil McCann reporting on a petrol shortage and Carol Kirkwood being taken out by a guide dog, to broken clocks and that iconic interview where a professor’s children stole the show. Now, we give you a cat trying to jump into view, only to be expertly dealt with by its owner. The incredible moment, understood to have taken place just after 5am on Monday ahead of BBC Breakfast, occurred as presenter Sally Bundock interviewed a contributor about the Duke of Sussex’s upcoming court case against the publisher of the Mirror. The duke is seeking compensation over allegations Mirror Group Newspapers was involved in the unlawful gathering of personal information for news reports – including through voicemail interception colloquially known as ‘"phone hacking". Putting a question to her Virginia-based guest, Bundock asked: “In terms of his [the duke’s] agenda, he’s looking to reform the way the press operates, not just in the UK but elsewhere in the world as well. “He wants to make a difference, doesn’t he, that’s his agenda?” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It was around when the BBC broadcaster said the word “reform” that the cat can be seen jumping at the woman, before being quickly grabbed and put down on the floor behind her. “Absolutely,” she replied, proceeding to answer the question as if nothing happened at all. Legendary. Sharing a clip of the interview to Twitter, TV journalist Scott Bryan said it was “just amazing scenes all round”: Others loved it too: Needless to say, when it comes to unwanted interruptions, the interviewee was not in the mood for "kitten" around… Sorry. Wales take aim at Armenia as Euro 2024 qualifying heats up – 5 talking points
Wales return to Euro 2024 qualifying action against Armenia in Cardiff on Friday. Rob Page’s side began the campaign in March with a 1-1 draw in Croatia and a 1-0 home victory over Latvia. Here, the PA news agency looks at the main talking points surrounding the Group D clash as Wales aim to build on that promising start. Brooks is back David Brooks would provide one of the most heart-warming stories of the season by returning to the international arena at the Cardiff City Stadium. Brooks was diagnosed with stage-two Hodgkin lymphoma while on international duty in October 2021 and has rejoined the Wales squad for the first time since announcing he was cancer-free in May last year. The 25-year-old attacker returned to action for Bournemouth in March and made his first start last month. Brooks has won 21 caps for Wales and played at Euro 2020 before his illness was diagnosed. Same again, please Duplicating March’s return of four points will do Wales just fine. Taking a point from World Cup semi-finalists Croatia courtesy of Nathan Broadhead’s stoppage-time strike was a bonus that few – if anyone – predicted. Beating Armenia and getting some reward against Turkey in Samsun on Monday would represent a huge step for Welsh ambitions of clinching a top-two spot and reaching the finals in Germany next summer. Johnson boost Wales’ March games were overshadowed by the absence of Brennan Johnson. Boss Rob Page suggested Johnson’s club Nottingham Forest had not done enough to get the forward fit for international duty, a claim which Reds boss Steve Cooper subsequently denied. Whatever the truth of that, Johnson had an impressive maiden top-flight campaign at the City Ground and his return to the Wales squad is a huge boost. Managing post-season break It will be nearly three weeks since the Premier League finished when Wales walk out to take on Armenia. The regular EFL season ended even earlier on May 8 and several members of Page’s squad have not played since. Page organised a Cardiff camp for his non top-flight players last month before taking the entire squad to Portugal to prepare for Armenia and Turkey, but it remains to be seen how match-fit they are heading into the two qualifiers. Painful memories Armenia and Wales have only met twice, in 2002 World Cup qualifying. Both games were drawn, with John Hartson scoring twice in a 2-2 draw at Yerevan’s Republican Stadium in March 2001 after Armenia had been reduced to 10 men. The return game the following September was Wales’ 500th match. But Wales failed to mark the occasion with a win as their World Cup qualification hopes disappeared with a goalless draw at the Millennium Stadium. Alfa Romeo confirm driver line-up for 2024 F1 season
Alfa Romeo have announced that both Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will remain with the team for the 2024 F1 season. The pair, who have worked together at Alfa since the start of the 2022 campaign, will team up for a third consecutive season, Alfa confirmed on Thursday. Bottas has a deal with the team until 2025 - signed upon his arrival from Mercedes at the end of 2021 - while Zhou has signed a one-year extension. Alfa also confirmed that Theo Pourchaire, who is on the cusp of winning this year’s Formula 2 title, will be their reserve driver once again. 2024 will be Bottas’ 12th straight season in Formula 1 while Zhou, the first Chinese driver in the sport, will race at his home grand prix for the first time when the Chinese Grand Prix returns to the calendar in April. “Signing again with the team is always a great feeling, especially when we know how things are shaping up,” Zhou said. “I am proud to be part of Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake and grateful for their trust: I have been working extremely hard since day one and there is an incredible level of motivation to keep doing so every day forward. “My relationship with Valtteri is really good, and we are working closely together and with the team to push everyone forward. I am also very excited about the opportunity to finally race with my team in China, in front of my home crowd. “It will be a great moment and I’m proud to be able to share it with all those who have supported me.” The Sauber-works team are being taken over by German giant Audi for the 2026 season when new regulations come into force. Bottass added: “I have a feeling we have an exciting journey ahead of us, so I am happy and grateful to be able to look forward to 2024 knowing how the team is shaping up. “There is a good atmosphere within our squad, I get along with Zhou and we both push each other hard to improve. There is an impressive amount of work going on behind the scenes, in Hinwil and beyond, and now that the line-up is set for next year, we can focus fully on improving, starting this weekend in Singapore already. “Every step forward we make is a step forward for this year and next, so we are motivated to give everything we have every time we’re trackside or at the factory.” Alfa have struggled for car performance so far this season and have only amassed 10 points after the first 14 races of the season. Bottas has six points, while Zhou has four. They currently lie ninth in the Constructors’ Standings, with only AlphaTauri below them.
