‘Beer tanning’ is one of the latest beauty fads to trend on TikTok, with the ‘beertan’ tag racking up over 200k views. As the phrase suggests, beer tanning means applying beer to the skin while sunbathing, in the belief it will enhance the tanning process. Some fans of the method on social media have been applying beer as well as SPF, while others have skipped sun-care altogether and simply rubbed beer onto their skin. What is ‘beer tanning’ and is it safe? “The beer tanning trend involves using beer as an alternative to traditional tanning lotions to achieve a sun-kissed glow. Proponents of this trend claim that the sugars and acids in beer can help darken the skin, and potentially provide additional benefits due to the presence of antioxidants and vitamins in some beer types,” Caroline Brooks, skin specialist and founder of The Glasshouse Salon & Spa, told PA Media. “However, it’s important to note that there is no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness or safety of using beer for tanning purposes.” Serious health risks Dr Maham Khan, consultant dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic, stressed it’s “crucial to approach this trend with caution” as there are potentially serious sun safety concerns. “As a consultant dermatologist treating patients with skin cancer on a daily basis, I feel compelled to stress the utmost importance of exercising caution and mindfulness when it comes to the TikTok trend of ‘beer tanning’. While the desire to achieve a glowing tan is understandable, it is crucial to approach this trend with caution and prioritise sun protection,” said Khan. “Applying beer to the skin in the belief that it enhances tanning is a questionable practice that lacks scientific evidence. More importantly, this method does not provide any protection against the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. “UV radiation is a known carcinogen and a major contributor to skin damage, which can manifest as sunburn, premature ageing, and an increased risk of skin cancer, including melanoma.” Protecting your skin in the sun is vital SPF is important for all skin types and skin tones. While it’s especially vital for people with naturally pale complexions, even those who don’t think they have a tendency to burn need to protect themselves in the sun. “I cannot stress enough the significance of using quality and appropriate SPF products to shield the skin from harmful UV rays,” Dr Khan added. “Sunscreen with a high SPF rating, along with broad-spectrum protection, is essential to safeguard the skin effectively. “However, it’s crucial to note that sunscreen alone may not offer complete protection, and additional measures such as seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours, are equally vital. “Furthermore, it is imperative to understand that a tan is not a sign of healthy skin, but rather an indication of damage. Even if individuals manage to achieve a tan through unconventional methods like beer tanning, it should not be considered a safe or desirable practice.” Is it ever worth trying a beer tan? According to the experts – no. If you do enjoy a beer at the beach, stick to drinking it (preferably under a nice shady umbrella). “The safest and most effective way to achieve a sun-kissed glow is by using self-tanning products or spray tans, that are specifically formulated for this purpose and have undergone rigorous testing to ensure their safety and effectiveness,” said Brooks. “Always prioritise the health and wellbeing of your skin when considering any beauty or tanning trend.” Dr Khan added: “I strongly advise against engaging in the beer tanning trend or any other unproven and potentially harmful methods of tanning. Erik ten Hag believes Sir Bobby Charlton will always remain an inspiration to Manchester United as they prepare for their first home game since the World Cup-winner died on Saturday. Tributes to Charlton, who was 86, will take place before Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Copenhagen, in the form of a minute’s silence, a wreath being placed on Charlton’s seat in the directors’ box and players and club staff wearing black armbands. Charlton will also be remembered in the official programme for both the Copenhagen match and Sunday’s derby against Manchester City. There will be a minute’s applause prior to the City match as well as expressions of remembrance via flags and banners in the stadium. Fans have already been flocking to Old Trafford to leave flowers, scarves and messages around the statue of Charlton, Denis Law and George Best – the ‘United Trinity’ – which is located outside the ground. And when asked if Charlton would be an inspiration for his side not only on Tuesday but beyond, Ten Hag pointed to the statue. “He is in front of Old Trafford,” Ten Hag said. “With Denis Law and George Best. He is always with us. Jonnie Irwin has shared an emotional milestone as he cycled with his four-year-old son Rex, on what appeared to be Rex’s last day at nursery. The TV presenter, 49, who is best known for hosting property show A Place in the Sun and Escape to the Country, publicly revealed his diagnosis in November 2022 after his lung cancer spread to his brain. He has previously said he “doesn’t know how long” he has to live. Irwin, who has been receiving palliative care for the past three years, posted an update on Monday (8 August) as he accompanied Rex on his way to nursery. “Last EVER ride to nursery with Rex,” wrote Irwin in a new Instagram post, sharing a series of pictures of himself and Rex on their bicycles as Irwin’s two-year-old son, Rafa, played with a spade. “Suitably waved off by Rafa and his spade and Rex with his game face on!” added Irwin. Irwin, who shares his three boys Rex and twins Rafa and Cormac with his wife Jessica Holmes, detailed his experience of palliative hospice care in a recent interview with BBC Morning Live. The property expert described his hospice experience as a “delight”, adding that his initial perception of such facilities were that they were “very much a boiling hot room full of people who looked frail and towards the end of their days”. However, it was “nothing of the sort” when he did actually go in. “It’s spacious, energised, comfortable,” Irwin told the show, adding: “I’ve had a really, really good experience at my hospice.” He urged anyone who is facing a terminal diagnosis to “embrace” end-of-life care and to try going to a hospice if they have been offered the choice. “My first experience of palliative care and hospice was blood transfusions,” he explained. “I had my first blood transfusion in hospital and then was invited to use the hospice, so I have it a go as a day patient and went into a lovely room. “I implore people to check out hospices. If you’ve got the choice of using it, then use it… I encourage people to explore that option because it’s not the doom and gloom operation you might think it was.” Irwin recently revealed that sometimes he has to “remove himself” from his family home to go to a hospice when he is in a lot of pain because it makes him “not good to be around”. He told Hello! magazine: “I’m like a bear with a sore head and I don’t want [my family] to be around that.” In another appearance with podcast OneChat previously, he said that being in pain affects his mood, explaining: “I have been close to death’s door, twice at least. You lose your memory, you lose your patience. I have got a very short temper.
