Michael Schumacher’s brother opens up about accident: ‘Sometimes life isn’t fair’
Michael Schumacher’s brother opens up about accident: ‘Sometimes life isn’t fair’
Ralf Schumacher has opened up about his brother Michael Schumacher’s accident nearly 10 years ago, simply stating: “Sometimes life isn’t fair.’ Seven-time F1 world champion Michael has not been seen publicly since suffering life-changing injuries in a near-fatal skiing accident in December 2013 in Meribel, France. Michael’s wife, Corinna, has insisted on keeping Michael’s medical condition private in the years since as he recovers at home in Switzerland. Ralf, who raced against Michael in Formula 1 from 1997-2006, has this week briefly spoken publicly about the accident and the impact it has had on the Schumacher family. “Sometimes life isn’t fair, unfortunately. We have to accept it,” Ralf told German outlet Bunte. “When I see his [Michael’s] kids, Gina-Maria and Mick, my heart smiles. If anyone in the family seeks my advice, I’m there. “They’re making their way.” Schumacher’s son Mick lost his F1 race seat at Haas last year and is now a reserve driver at Mercedes, who Michael drove for from 2010-2012. The Schumacher family lawyer, Felix Damm, detailed this week why no formal “final report” has ever been publicised on the Ferrari icon. “It was always about protecting private things,” Damm told German outlet LTO. “We considered whether a final report about Michael’s health could be the right way to do this. “But that wouldn’t have been the end of it and there would have had to be constantly updated ‘water level reports’ and it would not have been up to the family when the media interest in the story stopped.” Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt has a close relationship with the Schumacher family, revealing last year he has seen the German three times a week on some occasions – adding that the 54-year-old is in the “best of hands… surrounded by people who love him.” Todt also said as recently as last July that he still watches F1 races with Schumacher despite the German’s unknown medical state. “I don’t miss Michael, I see him,” Todt told German broadcaster RTL. “Yes, it’s true, I watch grand prix with Michael. But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together.” Todt is a close friend of Schumacher’s since their time working together during a successful era at Ferrari, when the German won five of his seven world titles from 2000-2004. In April, an editor of a German magazine was sacked after the Die Aktuelle publication used artificial intelligence to produce fake quotes from Schumacher. The magazine was labelled “disgraceful” by fans online for depicting the AI responses as an “exclusive interview” on their 15 April front cover. In a Netflix documentary which aired in 2021 titled Schumacher, Corinna detailed how his family have dealt with the situation and continue to “get on with their lives.” “Michael is here. Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength, I find,” Corinna said. “We’re together. We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. “We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives. ‘Private is private’, as he always said. “It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us and now we are protecting Michael.” Read More Alpine provide update over Mick Schumacher seat for 2024 after test session F1 2023 season race schedule: When is the Brazilian Grand Prix? Homer Simpson's best meme has been turned into an Adidas trainer
We all know the GIF where Homer Simpson backs into a bush. Well now, Adidas might have created its best collaboration yet, by combining the famous meme and their classic Stan Smith trainer. The GIF, taken from a 1994 episode of The Simpsons, has been widely used online to express embarrassment in certain situations. "Him coming through the hedges was based on my childhood behaviour of walking through hedges in my neighbourhood. I would pretend that I was dimension-hopping," David Mirkin, who was a showrunner at the time, explained. "You can only do it a few times before you leave a hole, and so I did tens of thousands of dollars of damage to people’s hedges I’m sure." The iconic meme can now be found on the back of the Adidas trainer – and we must admit, they nailed the bush's texture. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The collaboration is already going down a treat on Twitter with one writing: "These are incredible. The texture of the bush definitely going to have to grab a pair of these." "Damn I need those in my life," another added, as a third reiterated: "These are actually brilliant." Meanwhile, one eagle-eyed creative joked: "Man I wish Homer was a lil more into the bush in the right shoe." This isn't the first time one of the show's characters has appeared on an Adidas shoe. In 2022, the Adidas Superstars payed homage to Marge Simpson and her famed blue do. The Adidas Stan Smiths featuring the Homer meme will reportedly be released on August 18, according to Sneaker Leakers. Indy100 reached out to Adidas for comment. Have your say in our news democracy. 4 signs you’ve eaten too much salt
4 signs you’ve eaten too much salt
Feeling the urge to glug a glass of water shortly after you’ve munched a packet of crisps, bowl of popcorn or handful of peanuts, is a clear sign your snack was on salty side – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. “Salt is a necessary requirement to eat – and not for flavour,” says Pippa Hill, nutritionist and founder of The Weight Loss Guru. Table salt, aka sodium chloride, contains around 40% sodium, an essential nutrient. “Eaten in a small quantity, sodium helps the conduction of nerve impulses, muscle contraction and relaxation, and helps maintain the balance of water and minerals,” she continues. “A lack of salt can lead to muscle cramps, nausea, fatigue and light-headedness.” However, consuming more than the 6g a day recommended by the NHS for adults – equating to around one teaspoon – can be detrimental for your health. “A high salt intake disrupts the natural sodium balance in the body,” says Olivia Burley, registered associate nutritionist who is currently working on the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme. This can result in high blood pressure, she explains: “Hypertension is a condition where blood pressure remains elevated over time, which can increase the risk of heart and circulatory diseases.” Unless you keep a very close eye on food labels, it’s not always obvious how much salt you’re eating in a day. “Examples of foods high in salt can be canned fish or poultry, frozen foods such as breaded meats, salted nuts, canned beans, cured meats, soup and sandwiches,” says Hill. And just because you’ve drunk enough water to quench your thirst doesn’t mean you’re negating the effects of too much salt, which is why it’s important to be aware of other health indicators. “If you are experiencing any or all these symptoms, it is always best to seek medical advice,” Burley advises. 1. Headaches The dehydration caused by excess salt intake can lead to severe headaches. “These headaches tend to be more painful than a mild one, giving a throbbing sensation as the blood vessels are being expanded,” Hill says. “They tend to come on between an hour or two after you’ve eaten, as sodium levels rise through the body.” They may come on quicker if you have high blood pressure or suffer from chronic headaches in general, but can often be solved by rehydrating. “As your water levels are imbalanced, by drinking more water you’re able to minimise and get rid of the headache.” 2. Swollen feet and hands Also known as edema, swelling of the fingers, ankles or feet can be a delayed reaction to a spike of sodium. “When too much salt is consumed, the body retains the extra sodium and increases the fluid outside of the cells, Burley explains. “This causes the kidneys to have reduced function, remove less water and therefore increase blood pressure.” Swelling may occur more when sitting down for too long or on long journeys. “This isn’t an instant response after eating, but if in the next 24 hours of having eaten salty foods you notice swelling in these areas, it could be a link,” Hill says. “It’s best to seek medical advice if this is an ongoing occurrence, as it could be a sign of a more serious health concern.” 3. High blood pressure “Salt is the largest cause of high blood pressure,” Hill warns. “Within just 30 minutes, eating excess salt will have a bodily reaction to the blood vessels.” Also called hypertension, if left untreated it can increase your risk of serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes. Hills says: “If after eating a salty diet, your symptoms include blurred vision, chest pain such as a tight feeling, palpitations, shortness of breath or sudden nosebleeds, it could mean you have a raised blood pressure.” Burley adds: “Hypertension can often have no symptoms and the only way to know your blood pressure is to get it monitored using a machine.” 4. Frequent urination “Excessive thirst is a common response to eating salty foods and naturally leads to an increase in fluid consumption, causing excessive urination,” Burley says. By sending the signal that you need to guzzle lots of liquid, the body aims to remove the excess salt build-up. “Although drinking more fluids in response to an increase in salt is one of the main reasons for urine production, it could be a symptom of other conditions like polyuria, therefore medical checks are best.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Am I just tired or is it ME?
