Wisconsin student brutally beaten and sexually assaulted near campus
Wisconsin student brutally beaten and sexually assaulted near campus
A female student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison remains in critical condition following a horrific off-campus attack. The Madison Police Department announced on Tuesday that the victim, a woman in her 20s, was found between West Wilson and Bedford streets in the early morning hours of Sunday. A witness who realised that she was severely injured alerted authorities to the scene. The victim was raped and beaten, police said, before the suspect fled the scene. Her injuries are life-threatening but she is expected to survive. Authorities have asked people who live near where the attack took place to submit footage from surveillance cameras that may have captured the assault. “If you were gone during the holiday weekend and live within 4 blocks of where this incident occurred (Wilson St and Bedford intersection) we ask that you submit all surveillance video and/or photos from this area,” the department said in a statement. “This could also be video surveillance from vehicles, such as Teslas, that were parked in the area. All video already submitted is in the process of being reviewed.” Investigators have gathered physical, digital and biological evidence over the weekend, but encouraged residents of the area to submit any footage they have available. The case is considered to be a top priority, and significant progress has been made in the investigation, police said. The department said in a statement on Tuesday that the victim did not know her attacker and the assault appeared to be random. The woman remains in critical condition but is expected to recover. “This investigation is in its preliminary stages right now. We have called in numerous Madison Police personnel on this holiday weekend to conduct a thorough and complete investigation,” said Assistant Chief Paige Valenta. Patrols in the area have increased in the aftermath of the attack. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid walking alone, especially at night. Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact the Madison Police Department’s non-emergency line at 608-255-2345, the Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or submit information anonymously here. Lewis Hamilton rues Mercedes error which cost him victory at United States Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton rues Mercedes error which cost him victory at United States Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton insists Mercedes should have pitted him earlier after Max Verstappen’s victory at the United States Grand Prix. Hamilton, who started third on the grid, was closing in on Verstappen in the final laps but in the end crossed the finish line two seconds behind the Dutchman, who claimed his 15th win of the season. Mercedes executed a slightly different two-stop strategy and, as Hamilton acknowledged afterwards, in hindsight should have pitted the seven-time world champion earlier in the first half of the race. “We should’ve stopped before Lando [Norris],” said Hamilton. “I don’t know why we didn’t… the deficit was so hard. We’ve got some work to do.” Mercedes came to Austin with an upgraded floor and it seemed to improve performance, with Hamilton satisfied with the team’s latest step despite the near-miss. However, the seven-time world champion added that the pit stops weren’t quite top-notch in Texas. “Other than that, it’s a step forwards,” he continued. “We need to pick up on some areas, the pit stops and strategy maybe, but it’s right there. “Verstappen started sixth and he was out in front. They [Red Bull] are still ahead and they’re not developing now – they’re just chilling. “We’ve got a huge amount of work to do.” It is the closest Hamilton has come to winning a race this season. The 38-year-old still hasn’t won a race since December 2021 in Saudi Arabia, but is now closing in on Sergio Perez for second place in the world championship. Whoopi Goldberg blasts millennials who 'only want to work four hours'
Whoopi Goldberg blasts millennials who 'only want to work four hours'
Whoopi Goldberg has become the latest middle aged person to scold millennials for being lazy. The Oscar-winner, who turns 68 on 13th November, said the younger generation “only want to work four hours” and dismissed the idea that it is harder to get on the property ladder now than in previous decades. She said: “Every generation comes and wants to do better than their parents did, but I am sorry, if you only want to work four hours, it is going to be harder for you to get a house. “I feel for everybody that feels this, but I am sorry, we busted our behinds, we had to because we didn’t have the opportunities. “Every generation is told they are going to do worse than their parents, people pick it up and do what they do and they raise themselves. And this is what you've got to do. “It is called being a good citizen.” Goldberg, who has an estimated net worth of $60m, made the comments after a slew of studies came out this year which suggest it is harder for millennials to own homes than previous generations. Government data analysed by property listing company Apartment List found that by age 30, just 42 per cent of millennials owned homes, compared to 48 per cent of gen Xers and 51 per cent of baby boomers. The gap persists into their early 40s, with the oldest millennials still having a lower rate of ownership than previous generations when they were that age. Speaking on a talk show on 8 November, Goldberg was responding to comments from co-host Alyssa Farah, who suggested the 2008 financial crisis and other economic disruptions in the 15 years since had made things more difficult for millennials. While it is unlikely to be the only factor, many young people in the US came out of college with poor earning prospects in the wake of the financial crash. That, in turn, widened income inequality and caused house prices to rise faster than wages in the decade following. People on social media were quick to criticise her comments. One person said: “Sometimes Whoopi totally gets it wrong. This would be an instance.” “Whoopi don’t do this… Homes are unaffordable, and people are priced out of their area,” another wrote. “Whoopi’s tone is a prime example of why things are so tough for younger generations,” a third person added.
