It’s looking set to be the biggest tournament in the history of the Women’s game, and a small part of footballing history has already been made at the Women’s World Cup. People tuning into the opening games have seen VAR used like never before at a senior tournament. Changes are being trialled by FIFA this summer and now people inside the stadium and at home are able to hear the officials after the video assistant referee reviews take place in real time. While it was previously trialled at the Men's Club World Cup and the Men's U20 World Cup, it’s the first time it’s been used at a senior level international tournament. The first moment fans got to see it in action came during New Zealand’s game against Norway, when a penalty was given to the Kiwi's for handball following a VAR review. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter After watching the footage back on the pitch-side monitor, referee Yoshimi Yamashita addressed the crowd and said "the decision is... penalty". The decision was greeted with cheers by the crowd, and the new VAR format could be a regular feature football fans will get used to seeing in most formats soon. One of the people who really liked the new changes was Ian Wright, who was watching in the stands. The former England and Arsenal legend posted a video of himself reacting the decision, saying: "I like the way the referee done that!" He wrote in the caption: "That new VAR business was good." Others praised the step, but said they wanted to hear more information about the review while it was taking place, not just after the decision was made. “This was [an] excellent start - but maybe hearing the discussion too when reviewing like in cricket and rugby,” one said. Another added: “Thought it might be the VAR talking through the decision with the ref, not just the ref saying what the decision is. When the ref goes to the screen we know the decision is likely to be given so hardly need it announcing when fans can see the ref anyway.” One more said: “Good step in the right direction but we need to hear the conversation between room & ref.” “Step in the right direction. Maybe this particular decision didn’t really need any more explaining. But would be good to hear more on some other decisions over the coming days,” a user commented. Donald Trump posted a series of video rants on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday night after a Manhattan federal jury found that he sexually abused Elle magazine columnist E Jean Carroll in a dressing room in Manhattan’s Bergdorf Goodman department store in the 1990s. Ms Carroll, 79, sued the former president for raping her and then “destroying” her reputation when he accused of lying about the encounter, claiming that she wasn’t “my type”. After almost two weeks of testimony, the jury found Mr Trump liable of sexually abusing Ms Carroll, but did not find that she had proven that he raped her. As it is a civil case, Mr Trump does not face any jail time and does not have to register as a sex offender but has been ordered to pay Ms Carroll almost $5m in damages for battery and defamation. Marco Silva called for Fulham to be more ruthless in front of goal after their narrow 2-1 win over Norwich in the Carabao Cup third round. Goals from Carlos Vinicius and Alex Iwobi sealed victory for the Cottagers despite Borja Sainz’s 75th-minute effort for the visitors. Manager Silva believes Fulham need to convert more chances after they nearly paid the price for their earlier missed opportunities. “We had some good moments but we missed many chances to kill the game before and to score more goals,” Silva said. “Until the moment (Iwobi’s goal) we did not take the goal and against this type of team who have enthusiasm in this competition the game was tough and was always open. “We created a big number of chances but we need to be more ruthless and effective. “We have to finish moments when the ball is inside the box. We had it from the right and from the left so many times. “We need to be more assertive in those moments because we created enough.” Iwobi’s memorable second-half strike was his first Fulham goal since his reported £22million move from Everton on deadline day.
