Matt Doherty returns to Wolves after Atletico Madrid exit
Republic of Ireland international Matt Doherty has completed a return to Wolves on a free transfer. The defender has signed a three-year deal with the Molineux outfit, after making more than 300 appearances during his first spell at the club. Doherty left Wolves after a decade of service to sign for Tottenham in 2020 but departed Spurs in January on a free transfer and joined Atletico Madrid on a six-month deal. After the 31-year-old made only two appearances during his brief stint in Spain, he has now returned to England and will work under Julen Lopetegui. Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs said: “We’re really happy Matt’s back and he’s one the manager really wanted when he knew he was available. “After Spurs and Atletico Madrid, he’s hungry to prove himself again and will add strength in depth to the full-back area, providing competition and making us better in those positions. “He knows the club and what it means to play here – he’s been successful at Wolves before and knows what the fans want. “For us, it’s another homegrown player, but one who can share his knowledge and the required standards across the group, so he will be able to slot back in no problem.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live

Lily Allen's three word message about Brexit says it all
Lily Allen's three word message about Brexit says it all
Singer and actress Lily Allen simply tweeted ‘Brexit was dumb’ earlier this weekan and was met with overwhelming agreement from many. Since 52 percent of the British public voted to leave the European Union back in 2016, many have come to the conclusion that the decision was a mistake, after rising prices, limited economic growth, and other negative impacts that have risen as a result of Brexit. The 38-year-old singer’s tweet got over 9,000 likes and over 700 retweets. Making it clear that many shared similar feelings to Allen. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Some even said that Allen’s tweet didn’t go far enough, with one user commenting: ‘You win the Twitter Understatement of the Year Award.’ Others left comments such as ‘facts!’, and ‘simply put, and true.’ Of course, there were some who disagreed with Allen’s statement. One user said ‘it was the best thing to happen to the UK this century.’ Some users wanted Allen to give her reasonings for the statement. This isn’t the first time the 'Smile' singer has expressed her disagreement with the UK’s decision to leave the EU. Back in 2017, Allen posted a tweet that told Brexiteers they were ‘responsible for everything bad that happens to the UK.’ A YouGov poll from 2022 found 1 in 5 Britons who voted for Brexit now think it was the wrong decision. As well as Nigel Farage, a key Brexiteer in the Vote Leave campaign, admitting earlier this month that Brexit had ‘failed’. Have your say in our news democracy. Margot Robbie's iconic 'Barbie' foot scene has inspired a new TikTok trend
Greta Gerwig's hotly anticipated Barbie film is set to hit screens next week – and people are already hooked. There is, however, one snippet in particular that's got everyone in a chokehold: a two-second clip of Margot Robbie's feet. In the trailer, the Australian actress is shown stepping out of her high heels and maintaining the doll's arched foot. It's even created a notable 65 per cent spike in searches for 'Barbie heels' in the last month alone. The shot sent social media spiralling, with some going as far as turning the scene into a viral TikTok challenge. In one clip that racked up over 100,000 views, TikToker Shannon said she felt inspired by the trailer to come up with the unique challenge. @shannascribner @barbiethemovie inspired me with a challenge idea!! Stitch & show me how well you can do the #BarbieFootChallenge !!! #barbiefootchallenge #barbie #foot #feet #heels #challenge #footchallenge #feetchallenge #margotrobbie Another TikTok user showed just how difficult the challenge actually is, after several attempts of perfecting the 'Barbie foot.' @alessandramercedes #barbiemovie #barbieshoes #shoecollection #challenge Meanwhile over on Twitter, people have already added the phrase to their vocabulary with many mocking Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis after being spotted with his wife doing what some have described as the "Barbie foot" pose. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Speaking about the famous Barbie scene, Robbie told The Project that it didn't actually require as much effort as people expected. "There’s no special effects, you’d be amazed how few [special effects] there are in this film actually," she said. "We didn‘t do that many takes of it, a couple of takes and I kind of held on to a bar so I was sturdy when I stepped. "We just put double-sided tape on the floor so that my shoes stayed still and I did have a pedicure that morning." Barbie will hit cinemas on 21 July. Have your say in our news democracy. David Moyes relieved West Ham come through ‘difficult night’ with slim advantage
David Moyes relieved West Ham come through ‘difficult night’ with slim advantage
David Moyes was relieved to come through a “difficult night” after West Ham recovered from a goal down to take a 2-1 lead into next week’s Europa Conference League second leg with AZ Alkmaar. Goals from Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio kept West Ham’s dreams of a first trophy in 43 years alive at a sold-out London Stadium. The Hammers were big favourites to beat the Dutch dark horses, but were put on the back foot when goalkeeper Alphonse Areola gifted AZ the lead before half-time. But another goalkeeping error from Australia international Mathew Ryan gave West Ham a penalty which Benrahma converted. Antonio then prodded home from a corner after a goalmouth scramble to give the Hammers a crucial lead going into next Thursday’s return leg in the Netherlands. “We’ve got a narrow lead but nothing more than that,” said Moyes. “The tie is very evenly balanced, there is very little in the game, if we were losing by a goal I wouldn’t be saying we were out of the tie. “I’m pleased we’ve got ourselves in front, which is a big thing. It was a difficult night. We’ve learned some lessons over the years but it’s difficult when you think you’re not getting the rub of the green. But we’re used to that at the minute. We have a big job to do next week David Moyes “I hugely believe we’ve got a big resilience here, through the club, through the team, and we’ve needed it. “We’re just off a big win against Manchester United and just won 2-1 in a semi-final first leg, so that’s OK. But we have a big job to do next week.” West Ham were given a painful lesson in last season’s Europa League semi-final, conceding in the first minute of the first leg and losing Aaron Cresswell to a red card in the second as they crashed out to Eintracht Frankfurt. They got an early warning when former Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie fizzed a low shot just past the post. And history repeated itself when West Ham allowed AZ to take a shock lead five minutes before half-time, Areola letting Tijjani Reijnders’ shot in at his near post. However, the hosts were thrown a lifeline in the 67th minute when Ryan missed his punch at a corner and caught Jarrod Bowen square in the face. Turkish referee Halil Umut Meler pointed to the penalty spot and Benrahma stepped up to bury a perfect spot-kick just inside the post. The official had infuriated the home crowd all match but, unlike last year’s match in Frankfurt, West Ham kept their heads. “There was a little period it was beginning to get a little out of hand but we’ve learned a bit from it,” added Moyes. “It’s an emotional game, football, and the players were fighting for everything.” Eight minutes later West Ham went ahead, Antonio stabbing home the rebound after Nayef Aguerd’s header was cleared off the line to give them a slim advantage and, if they improve next week, every chance of moving a step closer to a first European trophy since 1965.
