Influencer breaks down in tears after strangers reject her offer to pay for their shopping
An influencer was left in tears after her offer to pay for someone’s food shopping was rejected on camera. TikToker Amelia Goldsmith wanted to do a good deed and filmed herself in a supermarket approaching shoppers and offering to pay for their groceries to “cheer someone up”. But, things did not turn out as she had expected after she was shut down by multiple customers. Goldsmith was in a branch of Sainsbury’s when the incident occurred. In a TikTok video, she could be seen approaching a shopper with the offer. The man told her: “No, no, no. I really don't need it.” Another woman told her, “There's a lot more deserving people in the world but thank you,” adding, “I feel too guilty for taking it.” Instead, Goldsmith resorted to buying some dried pasta, rice and sauces and putting them in the store's food bank collection. Tearfully speaking to the camera, she said: “That was stressful, guys. That was really stressful.” @millyg_fit in hindsight i can see why people can react differently to this, but my intentions were purely to brighten up someones day? i’m still super happy with what I ended up doing and i’ll do more of it for sure #storytime #vlog #makesomeonesday #foodshop She continued: “I was expecting the first person to be, like, overjoyed and grateful and happy for me to pay for their shopping, but obviously that didn't go down well. “He was a little bit angry. I was a little bit taken aback and then - I'm gonna cry, to be honest - the second person, she just sort of looked at me like I was some absolute idiot weirdo.” She went on, explaining that it was a “challenge” for her to approach people because she finds social situations “really quite hard”. In the comments, other TikTokers suggested that next time she should try it in a different supermarket. Someone argued: “You need to go to a cheaper supermarket like Aldi or Lidl. People who shop in Sainsbury’s can afford it.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. How to make cassava chips
How to make cassava chips
If you are not familiar with cassava, it is tuber with a waxy, bark-like outer skin and a starchy centre,” explains Maria Bradford, author of Sweet Salone. It’s a staple in Sierra Leonean households, and Bradford adds: “This recipe combines my beloved cassava with European ingredients, such as Parmesan and truffle. “The flavour is every bit as good as potato chips, if not better, with just the right subtle hint of earthy truffle. They’re crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, perfectly salted and mixed with Parmesan to take them over the top. A simply luxurious snack!” Cassava chips with truffle oil, Parmesan and saffron mayo Serves: 6-8 Ingredients: For the cassava chips: 1kg cassava 1 tsp sea salt 60g parmesan, grated Sunflower oil, for deep frying Parmesan shavings, to serve 3 tbsp white truffle oil For the saffron mayo: Large pinch of saffron 2 tbsp hot water 300g good-quality mayonnaise 1-2 cloves garlic, finely chopped Method: 1. To peel the cassava, cut the cassava crosswise into five to eight-centimetre pieces. Using a sharp knife, cut lengthwise through the bark-like exterior and into the pink skin beneath. Place the tip of the knife under the skin to loosen it and pull off the skin and bark. Cut into chunky chip-sized pieces. 2. As you work, rinse the cassava and put the pieces in a large saucepan with cold water so it doesn’t discolour. When all are cut to size, add the salt and bring the pan of water to the boil. Boil until the cassava pieces are tender when pierced with a knife, about 25 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, make the saffron mayo. Crumble the saffron threads into a small bowl and pour over the hot water. Let it steep for 10 minutes. 4. Stir the mayonnaise and garlic together in a bowl. Add the saffron water and stir to combine. Taste and season with salt. 5. When the cassava is tender, drain it in a sieve and set aside until completely dry. 6. Heat the oil for frying in a deep, heavy-based pan no more than half full. To test if the oil is hot enough, drop a small breadcrumb into the hot oil. It should sizzle and turn brown in 20 seconds. 7. Working in small batches so as not to overcrowd the pan, fry the cassava chips until nicely golden, five to 10 minutes per batch. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a baking sheet lined with paper towels. 8. Toss the fried cassava chips with grated Parmesan and the white truffle oil. Serve with the saffron mayo on the side. ‘Sweet Salone’ by Maria Bradford (Quadrille, £30). Donald Trump Jr shares doctored Office clip showing Ron DeSantis wearing a woman’s suit
Donald Trump Jr shares doctored Office clip showing Ron DeSantis wearing a woman’s suit
Donald Trump Jr has shared a seemingly AI-generated clip of Ron DeSantis edited into the role of Steve Carell’s Michael Scott in The Office in a clip in which the character is mocked for wearing a woman’s suit. “Imagine when next time it’s not an obvious spoof from The Office but an attempt to depict itself as legitimate and much more nefarious,” CNN’s Jake Tapper tweeted. “Don Jr among others has shared this video. I don’t think any of us are ready for this next election online,” Alex Thompson of Axios said. Democratic consultant Tim Hogan added that “Folks, we simply are not ready for the 2024 GOP primary memes”. “Rhonda Santis is a perfect drag name, just saying,” Mr Hogan tweeted. Philip Germain at the Lincoln Project added: “I am once again asking for Steve Carrell to play DeSantis on SNL.” “I for one welcome the onslaught of election-season deepfakes,” Jesse Walker of Reason magazine wrote. As the mockery continued of Mr DeSantis’s glitch-ridden campaign launch, the Florida governor began to push back. He slammed his main rival for the 2024 GOP nomination, former President Donald Trump, claiming he “is a different guy” than when he first ran for president. Mr Trump is leading all other Republican candidates for the party’s presidential nomination, with Mr DeSantis running in second place, according to polls. Mr DeSantis officially embarked on his own bid for the White House earlier this week in a chaotic Twitter Spaces event with billionaire Elon Musk. The governor told radio host Matt Murphy that he was running to the right of Mr Trump and portrayed himself as more conservative, according to USA Today. “It seems like he’s running to the left and I have always been somebody that’s just been moored in conservative principles,” said Mr DeSantis. “So these will be interesting debates to have, but I can tell you, you don’t win nationally by moving to the left, you win nationally by standing for bold policy. We showed that in Florida. I never watered down anything I did.” And Mr DeSantis claimed that Mr Trump is not the same person who first ran for office. “I don’t know what happened to Donald Trump – this is a different guy today than when he was running in 2015 and 2016 and I think the direction that he’s going with his campaign is the wrong direction,” Mr DeSantis said. And he attacked Mr Trump over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic while in office. “I think [Trump] did great for three years, but when he turned the country over to Fauci in March of 2020 that destroyed millions of people’s lives,” Mr DeSantis said on a podcast. “And in Florida, we were one of the few that stood up, cut against the grain, took incoming fire from media, bureaucracy, the left, even a lot of Republicans, had school open, preserved businesses.” Read More Florida mom who tried to ban Amanda Gorman’s book has ties to far-right groups DeSantis accuses Trump of ‘moving to the left’ as he tells ex-president: ‘You’ve changed’ Ron DeSantis news – live: Don Jr shares AI-doctored clip of The Office showing DeSantis wearing woman’s suit Ivanka and Jared split over attending Trump 2024 launch – follow live Why was Donald Trump impeached twice during his first term?
