Andre Villas-Boas has spoken of the challenge faced by managers due to the increased use of data analysis, recalling it led to “massive, massive arguments” over the potential signing of Joao Moutinho when he was Tottenham head coach. The Portuguese wanted to sign compatriot Moutinho from Porto in the summer of 2012, but the midfielder was only sixth on the list compiled using data and statistical analysis by then sporting director Franco Baldini. Spurs pushed ahead with other targets, including Mousa Dembele, and only returned for Moutinho at the end of the summer transfer window, missing out on his signature by a minute. With more and more clubs using data and artificial intelligence to identify targets, Villas-Boas knows the conundrum that managers will now begin to face. “The most evident case I had when I was at Tottenham and I wanted to sign Joao Moutinho and he was sitting sixth on the list compiled by data people,” he said at Web Summit in Lisbon. “The first on the list was Dembele, we ended up signing him and we almost ended up signing Moutinho as well, but we lost it against the clock on the last day of the transfer window. “But it drained me emotionally to the point where, here was a guy that the data was not showing all that he represented from the coach’s perspective, which is a player that knows your leadership, a player that knows your style, adaptability to your style. “This can be quantified, but it must be done in the view of a coach and not a single view. “This was the problem in the beginning and we mad massive, massive arguments in the beginning because of this with Moutinho. “We signed Dembele but missed out on Moutinho and it was unfortunate because we were going to build up a very strong midfield. “This is precisely where you have to have that balance to understand, what is your coaching philosophy and how it should be integrated into the data that has been provided to you.” I have this objective of serving FC Porto as a president and at the moment it is going to go up for election in April or June 2024 so I always have the idea the present myself. Manchester United bidder Sir Jim Ratcliffe is now the second-richest person in the UK according to the Sunday Times Rich List, with the list’s compilers placing his wealth at almost £30billion. Ratcliffe, the chief executive of the INEOS chemicals company, has bid to take a controlling stake in United. He faces competition from Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim, who made an improved fourth bid to buy 100 per cent of the club earlier this week. That move was interpreted as an attempt to seize the initiative from Ratcliffe, whose bid is reported to be structured to allow two members of the Glazer family which currently owns the club to keep a combined 20 per cent stake. Ratcliffe, born in Failsworth in Greater Manchester, was ranked 27th on the 2022 Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated wealth of £6.075bn, but has jumped up to second in the 2023 list with wealth now believed to be £29.688bn, an increase of almost 400 per cent in 12 months. Robert Watts, the compiler of the Rich List, told PA: “This year we have new information about the full scale of INEOS’ profits and that has made us confident that INEOS is now worth at least £40bn. “We have also learned more about the personal assets that Jim has accumulated over the past 25 years.” Ratcliffe topped the Rich List in 2018 when his personal wealth was estimated at £21.05bn. INEOS already owns French club Nice and Swiss side Lausanne. The Reuben family, which includes Jamie Reuben who bought a minority stake as part of the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle in October 2021, drops from third to fourth on the list despite their overall fortune increasing by £2.134bn to £24.399bn. The Coates family, which founded the bet365 betting company and owns Championship club Stoke, remains 16th in the list with a combined fortune of £8.795bn, an increase of £158million compared to 2022. Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich dropped off the list altogether, having been in 28th place last year. The list compilers believe his fortune remains largely intact despite sanctions imposed by the UK and other governments following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but he is not on the 2023 list because he does not have British citizenship or live in the UK. The Sunday Times identified golfer Rory McIlroy as the richest active UK sportsman with a fortune of £200m. A memorial fund for has been set up to champion LGBTQ+ causes in honour of murdered California store owner Lauri Carleton. The Lauri Carleton Memorial Fund “aims to keep her spirit alive” by supporting community groups and sustainability causes in her adopted home of Lake Arrowhead, California, and is endorsed by Carleton’s husband Bort and nine children. “Lauri was a pillar in our community, an unwavering champion of values that sought to break down barriers and build bridges,” organisers from the Mountain Provision Cooperative said on social media. “Her dedication to equality and her courage in flying the LGBTQ+ flag exemplify her commitment to creating a world where love knows no boundaries.” Funds will go towards several community groups including Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ+, who described Carleton as a “fierce advocate for love, equality, and human rights”. “We will work closely with Lauri’s family in partnership with Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ+ and broader ally community to develop and amplify resources that promote LGBTQ+ awareness, equality, and inclusion,” it said in an Instrgam post. Carleton was a founding member of the Mountain Provisions Cooperative, which was set up earlier this year to help residents in the San Bernardino Mountains after a winter blizzard dumped 110 inches of snow in the area in a few days. The 66-year-old turned her store into an emergency relief centre and handed out supplies to local residents with her husband Bort during the severe snow dump, which cut off some areas for weeks. Authorities say Travis Ikechugi, 27, shot Carleton on 18 August after shouting homophobic insults at her over a Pride flag which was displayed outside of her Mag.Pi fashion store in Cedar Glen. Many of Carleton’s famous friends and acquaintances, including Hollywood director Paul Feig and comedian Bridget Everett, have condemned widespread “anti-gay and trans rhetoric” since her death.
