Ukraine-Russia war – live: Moscow fails in bid to return to UN’s top human rights body
Russia failed in its bid to return to the United Nations’ top human rights body on Tuesday, in a sign Moscow will continue to be isolated on the international stage. In a secret ballot, Russia won 83 votes versus 160 for Bulgaria and 123 for Albania, which both competed against it for two seats on the Human Rights Council. “UN member states sent a strong signal to Russia’s leadership that a government responsible for countless war crimes and crimes against humanity doesn’t belong there,” said Louis Charbonneau, United Nations director at Human Rights Watch. Russia was ousted from the council 18 months ago following its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It comes as Vladimir Putin’s forces launched 36 Iranian-made attack drones, targeting the Odesa, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, the Ukrainian military reported, adding that air defence systems destroyed 27 drones. Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said unspecified “logistics infrastructure” in his region had been damaged but that no injuries were reported. Elsewhere, Volodymyr Zelensky today he had “good news” on artillery and air defence supplies after talks with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in Bucharest. Man Utd fans show support for striking train drivers despite FA Cup disruption
A pair of Manchester United fans have gone viral after showing support for striking train drivers, despite it disrupting their travel plans for the FA Cup final. United are playing Man City at Wembley today (June 3) amid the walkout by members of the train drivers’ union Aslef, which also coincides with the Epsom Derby as well as other sporting and music events. Football fans were advised not to travel by train to Wembley, leaving thousands having to drive to London instead. The strike follows a walkout by train drivers on Wednesday and by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) on Friday in long-running disputes over pay, jobs and conditions. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Two fans were asked about the strikes on BBC Breakfast, and they showed their support for those involved despite the disruption. "I'm not going to criticise them for going on strike, because I do believe in fair pay and conditions for everybody. I won't criticise the strikers…” one of the fans told the BBC reporter. “It’s difficult because if you’re picking a strike, you’re going to pick a day that’s going to have maximum impact.” The comments were praised by other social media users, with one writing: “Great to hear members of the public defending the striking railway workers even though the strike has effected them.” Another said: “This is something the govt needs to hear. Solidarity from the public, they need to get out of their London bubble…” One more wrote: “Wow, never thought I’d like a Man Utd fan but here we are.” Meanwhile, Manchester United have the chance to deny Manchester City the treble in Saturday’s final at Wembley. It’s the first time the two Manchester clubs have met in the FA Cup final. Have your say in our news democracy. England held to goalless draw by Portugal in Women’s World Cup warm-up
England were unable to make the most of their chances as they were held to a goalless draw by Portugal in their send-off warm-up match at Stadium MK ahead of the Women’s World Cup. Georgia Stanway sent an effort against the bar, Lucy Bronze’s header hit the post and substitute Alessia Russo was denied by a goalline block as the European champions created a number of opportunities to no avail. Other notable moments included Lauren Hemp heading over and Russo firing wide from fine positions in a somewhat frustrating last home game for the Lionesses before departing the country for this summer’s showpiece in Australia and New Zealand. Sarina Wiegman’s players fly to Australia on Wednesday and face Canada behind closed doors in another, final warm-up on July 14 before opening their World Cup campaign against Haiti in Brisbane eight days later. The Dutchwoman made three changes to her starting XI from April’s 2-0 loss to Australia, the team’s first defeat in their 31st outing under her. That included regular skipper and Milton Keynes native Leah Williamson, ruled out of the World Cup by an ACL injury, being replaced in defence by Alex Greenwood, who started at left-back, with Jess Carter in the centre. Women’s Super League Golden Boot winner Daly also came in, getting the nod ahead of Russo up front, as did Lauren James for Chloe Kelly. With Millie Bright, squad captain in the absence of Williamson, unavailable as she continued to build back up after knee surgery, goalkeeper Mary Earps skippered the side. Taking on a team ranked 17 places below them at 21st and heading to their first World Cup this summer, England made a lively start, with Daly seeing two headers saved by goalkeeper Ines Pereira in quick succession early on. Daly was subsequently just unable to get a touch on James’ cross into the danger zone just past the quarter hour mark, and Ella Toone struck wide moments later. The hosts then struggled to build much momentum for the remainder of the half, with an acrobatic 35th-minute attempt over the bar from Daly the only real effort of note, until Stanway, making her 50th England appearance, diverted the ball against the bar from Hemp’s cross shortly before the interval. Wiegman made a treble change at the break, with Russo, Kelly and Niamh Charles being brought on for Daly, Toone and Greenwood, and the opening stages of the second half saw two Kelly shots saved by Pereira either side of Hemp heading over from a great position. England’s pressure continued as Russo took the ball around Pereira only to be thwarted by an Ana Borges’ block on the line, Bronze headed against the post and Russo then struck wide when looking certain to score. Having had little to do, Earps then survived a scare as she misjudged a pass from Hemp and the ball rolled past the post and out for a corner. England dealt comfortably with that, as Pereira then did with efforts from Russo and Charles. Russo tried her luck twice more after that but saw the ball go wide again on both occasions as England failed to secure a sign-off victory before heading Down Under.

Video of Boston police officer getting hurt going down a kids slide viewed by millions
A video of a police officer in Boston getting hurt while hurtling down a slide at an incredible speed has been viewed by millions after going viral on social media. It's unknown exactly when the video was filmed but it does take place at Boston's City Hall Plaza which reopened last year with a fancy new playground and the tall, long and windy slide becoming an instant attraction. That being sad this attraction should be exclusively reserved for children as several examples, including a now-viral one of a police officer, show that it is not suitable for adults. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In the seven-second video, which Boston.com reported had been watched 13 million times on TikTok before being deleted, shows an officer being banged around in the metal before emerging at what seems like 100mph face down and scraping his arm across the concrete ground, yelling "oh f**k" in the process. The video has since reemerged on Twitter after NHL commentator Ryan Whitney said he was NHL commentator said that he was "begged to take it down," only for someone else to share it in the replies. As mentioned other people have had their troubles on the slide including city councillor Erin Murphy. A spokesperson for the Boston Police Department, said that the officer in the question was on duty at the time and that while he did hurt himself, used his own medial insurance to get treated and didn't miss any work as a consequence. It's not known if any other police officers were on the seen at the time. Have your say in our news democracy.
