Excerpts from an upcoming memoir by The Umbrella Academy actor Elliot Page have revealed the Juno star allegedly received a rape threat from an “acquaintance” at a Los Angeles party – six years before they came out as transgender. Page came out as gay in 2014, but in a section of the book seen and shared by People, the 36-year-old details an incident at a birthday party two months later in which the unnamed individual claimed, “you aren’t gay – that doesn’t exist” and that the Canadian was “just afraid of men”. The chapter, titled “Famous A**hole at Party”, goes on to add the male then reportedly told Page: “I’m going to f*** you to make you realise you aren’t gay.” Despite the threat of ‘corrective rape’ – a hate crime where the abuser seeks to change or ‘cure’ a person’s sexuality, often to heterosexuality – the anonymous actor apparently told Page at the gym, where they saw each other again a few days later, that they “don’t have a problem with gay people, I swear.” “I think you might,” Page replied. Expanding on the situation, Page told People he’s had “some version” of the incident “happen many times throughout my life”. These moments that we often like don’t talk about or we’re supposed to just brush off, when actually it’s very awful. “I put that story in the book because it’s about highlighting the reality, the s*** we deal with and what gets sent to us constantly – particularly in environments that are predominantly cis and heterosexual. “How we navigate that world where you either have more extreme, overt moments like that, or you have the more, like, subtle jokes. [In Hollywood] these are very powerful people – they’re the ones choosing what stories are being told and creating content for people to see all around the world,” they said. Page added that although he’s “purposely” not sharing the name of the individual, the person “will hear about this and know it’s him”, and there were others who saw and heard what happened at the party. Bukayo Saka will miss England’s upcoming internationals with Australia and Italy, the Football Association has confirmed. The Arsenal attacker was called up to Gareth Southgate’s squad on Thursday, despite concerns over his fitness after being substituted in recent matches at Bournemouth and Lens. Saka subsequently sat out Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday with a hamstring issue and club boss Mikel Arteta said afterwards the 22-year-old would have to pull out of the England squad. England boss Sarina Wiegman believes simply nullifying the threat posed by Australia striker Sam Kerr will not be enough to see the Lionesses through to a first-ever World Cup final. The European champions take on the Matildas in their semi-final tonight at 11 am BST at Sydney’s sold-out Stadium Australia, where the majority of the 75,000 in attendance will be backing the co-hosts. Captain Kerr is her country’s leading goal-scorer of either gender, but has not yet started a match in the global showpiece after injuring her calf pre-tournament, making her much-anticipated return as a substitute in Australia’s 2-0 last-16 victory over Denmark. Though the Chelsea forward is, at least in Australia, the poster-woman for this tournament, Wiegman insisted: “Australia is not just Sam Kerr. Yes, we have a plan [if she starts]. She can play and she can start on the bench, so that’s the situation. Of course she is a threat, she’s a very good player, so a lot of respect [to her]. “But there is more than Sam Kerr, because at the end it is always a team performance. When the team does really well an individual can do even better. That’s the same for Australia and it’s the same for England. “There is a lot of pressure on her because everyone expects things from her. I think Australia have grown in the tournament too, they had some difficult situations they had to come back from and they did really well. The transition to electric vehicles could save more than 100,000 lives in the US by 2050, according to a new study. Switching from fossil uel-burning to zero-emission vehicles would also result in 3 million fewer asthma attacks, the American Lung Association reported on Wednesday, provided that no more gas cars are on the road by 2035. Combined with cleaner electricity generation through renewable sources like solar and wind, this could generate over $1.2 trillion in public health benefits over the next quarter of a century. The report calculates what health impacts the emissions reduction would have on people living near busy roads or near electricity generation with unacceptable doses of toxic air pollution. “These benefits would take the form of avoiding up to 110,000 premature deaths, along with nearly 3 million asthma attacks and over 13 million workdays lost due to cleaner air,” the report stated. “Policies and investments must prioritise low-income communities and communities of colour that bear a disproportionate pollution burden. State and local jurisdictions should act to implement policies as soon as possible.” The report also notes that such a swift transition would avoid “even more dire consequences of climate change” on a global scale. Many countries have already made commitments to ban the sale of fossil fuel vehicles over the coming years in order to meet climate targets, while several major automotive companies have announced that they will stop manufacturing them. The US and China, which represent the two biggest car markets, have targets of 100 per cent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2040, similar to the UK and Europe. Despite these targets, only 4.6 per cent of cars sold in the US in 2021 were electric, according to figures from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the UK, a recent surge in electric car sales saw them surpass sales of new diesel cars for the first time last year.
