Ukraine-Russia war – live: G7 vows support for Kyiv as Moscow admits its forces have fallen back near Bakhmut
The G7 finance leaders promised support for Ukraine in a show of unity against Russia’s war as Moscow acknowledged that some of its soldiers have fallen back north of the city of Bakhmut. “We call for an immediate end of Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine, which would clear one of the biggest uncertainties over the global economic outlook,” the G7 ministers said in a statement. Russian defence ministry spokesperson, Igor Konashenkov, said Ukraine had launched an assault north of Bakhmut with more than 1,000 troops and up to 40 tanks, a scale that if confirmed would amount to the biggest Ukrainian offensive in some time. The Russians had repelled 26 attacks but troops in one area had fallen back to “regroup” in more favourable defensive positions near the Berkhivka reservoir northwest of Bakhmut, Mr Konashenkov said. It is the first admission from Moscow’s defence ministry that Ukraine has been successfully regaining ground around Bakhmut, which Russia has been trying to take control of for months. Raphael Varane knock adds to Manchester United’s injury problems
Raphael Varane has been ruled out for a few weeks as Manchester United’s injury issues pile up ahead of the Premier League trip to Arsenal. Erik ten Hag’s side head to north London on Sunday for their final match before the international break without several key players. Luke Shaw and Mason Mount picked up issues in the first week of the season, while summer signing Rasmus Hojlund has yet to make his debut due to a back complaint. Tyrell Malacia, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo and Tom Heaton have missed the start of the season and now experienced Varane faces a spell on the sidelines. A club statement read: “Raphael Varane will be missing from the team when Manchester United face Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday due to injury. “The France international came off at half-time in our 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday due to the complaint, which is expected to keep him out for a few weeks.” The PA news agency understands that United are expecting Varane to be back in less than the six weeks reported by some outlets. The 30-year-old has dealt with a number of injuries since moving to Old Trafford in 2021 and, having retired from the France set-up in February, will have the international break to work towards his return. Nicole Scherzinger accused of "insensitive"swimsuit photoshoot amid Hawaii homeland fires
Hawaiian native Nicole Scherzinger has been accused of ignoring the plight of her homeland by posting a swimsuit photoshoot on Instagram amid wildfires in Hawaii. The Maui fires have ravaged 850 hectares of land and is now the deadliest bushfire in US history. Hawaii Governor Josh Green yesterday confirmed that 93 people had been killed by the raging fires that started on 8 August. Six fires are still currently burning through the Hawaiian coast, with the Lahaina fire now under 85 per cent containment. Officials have warned that the death toll will likely rise once again when interior searches of around 1000 torched buildings take place. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Some 2200 buildings and structures have been burnt to the ground. About 46,000 residents and visitors have flown out of Kahului Airport in West Maui, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. With that in mind, when the former Pussycat Dolls singer posted images of herself in a swimsuit online, people thought she was being insensitive. Comments have since been turned off and deleted on the post, but before they were, one person reportedly commented on Scherzinger’s pics, “Maui on fire but you out here half naked in your glamorous life … OK”. Another added, “I just think it’s a bit insensitive bearing in mind what’s happening in (Hawaii)”. Another agreed, “Time to stop and support Hawaii, show us your doing something instead of posting pictures in bikini”. However, in fairness to Scherzinger her previous Instagram post was for a fundraiser for Maui and she has since followed it up with a video pleading with those to do what they can. She has also used her Instagram Stories to promote causes helping those in need on Maui. The cause of the wildfires is under investigation but it hasn't stopped conspiracy theorists spreading claims they were started by a 'space laser beam.' Celebrities should really think before they post. Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.
