Jackie Stewart suffers stroke and falls ‘unconscious’ in frightening health scare
Jackie Stewart has revealed he suffered a stroke five weeks ago in a health scare which saw him fall “unconscious for a long time.” The three-time F1 world champion, still a regular in and around the paddock, will be present at Silverstone this weekend despite the incident. The 84-year-old was in Jordan attending the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein when, the night before, he was taken to hospital after falling unconscious. "This was the night before the wedding, I got up in the night feeling strange,” he told the Daily Mail. "I just dropped. And then I can’t remember. I was unconscious for quite a long time. "I was taken to hospital in Jordan. My son Paul and his wife were there for the wedding, in a bedroom on a different floor. "To this day I don’t know how I got to Paul’s room, but I must have been somewhat alert to get hold of him.” Stewart was then treated in Jordan before flying home in a plane supplied by the Crown Prince. "They got me into an ambulance, but I have no recall of that either,” Stewart added. “His Majesty got the best doctors available for me. "I wanted to get home as fast as possible, and the Crown Prince of Bahrain very generously gave his aircraft to fly me back to Europe. "By then I was pretty much okay. I wasn’t walking very well though." Stewart now says he can walk “almost completely perfectly” and will be present at Silverstone for two days – he also attended a meeting at Downing Street on Tuesday alongside a number of F1 officials and team principals. The F1 legend has also backed championship leader Max Verstappen to continue his domination. “The combination of the Dutchman and Milton Keynes,” he added. “Max is a remarkably talented man, and he hasn’t gone astray. “He is a wonderful ambassador for our sport." Trump mocks disastrous DeSantis 2024 launch with bizarre joke about ‘red button’ and his ‘friend’ Kim Jong-un
Donald Trump mocked the disastrous Twitter Spaces launch of Ron DeSantis’s bid for the White House as he made a bizarre joke about Kim Jong-un. The one-term president took to his Truth Social platform to poke fun at the Florida governor, whose campaign launch descended into chaos as Twitter crashed immediately as he tried to present his candidacy to Elon Musk. “Rob,” My Red Button is bigger, better, stronger, and is working (TRUTH!), yours does not! (per my conversation with Kim Jung Un, of North Korea, soon to become my friend!)” Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social. Mr Trump tweeted in January 2018 that the “nuclear button” in Washington DC was “much bigger and more powerful” than the North Korean dictator’s “and my button works!” Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr, the eldest son of the one-term president, took to Twitter to ridicule his father’s main rival for the GOP presidential nomination, branding the campaign launch a “DeSaster.” “DeSantis is making JEB! look high energy right now,” he added. The Twitter event, which began at 6pm ET, was plunged into chaos when it was hit by tech issues and dropped audio almost immediately. David Sacks, one of the moderators of the event, said the massive number of participants was “melting the servers”. Despite the mocking he has received for the event, Mr DeSantis told Mr Musk as it ended: “We should do it again.” Earlier he laid out why he was running for president, before mostly talking about right-wing culture war issues beloved by many of his supporters. “I am running for president of the United States to lead our great American comeback,” Mr DeSantis said. “American decline is not inevitable. It is a choice,” he said. “And we should choose a new direction, a path that will lead to American revitalization.” Read More Ivanka and Jared split over attending Trump 2024 launch – follow live Why was Donald Trump impeached twice during his first term? Irish Times removes opinion article about ‘problematic’ fake tan amid concerns over AI hoax
Ireland’s newspaper of record has removed an article it said “may not have been genuine”, amid suspicions of a hoax using artificial intelligence (AI). The comment piece was published by The Irish Times on Thursday with the headline, “Irish women’s obsession with fake tan is problematic”. But the opinion article was taken down the following day, after reaching second place in the paper's most read online articles that day, according to broadcaster RTE, and sparking discussions about fake tan on a lunchtime radio show. An initial message on Friday reportedly said the article’s text had “been removed pending checks”. By Saturday, the paper had issued a “corrections and clarifications” note under the original headline, reading: “The Irish Times has become aware that the article originally published on this page may not have been genuine. “The article’s text was removed on Friday, May 12th, 2023, and a review has been initiated.” Claiming to be from “a strict Catholic family” in Ecuador who moved to Ireland in 2015 during the vote to legalise gay marriage, the purported author argued that Ireland’s “widespread use of fake tanning products” jarred with their vision of the country as at the “forefront of progressive social change”. “To me, fake tan represents more than just an innocuous cosmetic choice; it raises questions of cultural appropriation and fetishisation of the high melanin content found in more pigmented people,” the now-deleted article stated. But while the original headline and image remain online, the text and author’s byline has now been removed from the page, after journalists questioned whether the image of the author had also been created by AI. The Independent has approached the newspaper for comment. In a statement reported by the Irish Examiner, a spokesperson said: “On Friday, The Irish Times became aware that an article published online under the headline ‘Irish women’s obsession with fake tan is problematic’ may not have been genuine. “The story has been removed from irishtimes.com, and a review has been initiated.” Read More AI pioneer warns UK is failing to protect against ‘existential threat’ of machines Disturbing research warns AI may be ‘Great Filter’ that wipes out human civilisation Artificial intelligence could ‘transform’ heart attack diagnosis, scientists say ChatGPT user in China detained for creating and spreading fake news, police say
