Neil Warnock's best moments as iconic football manager retires...again
It was inevitable, but somehow we never thought the day would come when Neil Warnock stepped down from the world of football management. He’s been in the game since the 60s as a player and the 80s as a manager, taking on 19 management jobs at 16 different clubs. In that time he’s made a reputation for himself as one of football’s most incorrigible characters, often performing wonders on miniscule budgets and enjoying riling up opposition crowds just as much as he loved inspiring support among his own fans. He’s now revealed that he’s retiring (albeit not for the first time) and at the age of 74 he’ll step down as Huddersfield Town boss this week and leave football management behind. It’s not the first time he’s retired, of course. He first announced he was hanging up his boots in 2022, but he got tempted back after being offered a short-term deal at Huddersfield which was later extended to a one-year contract. His love for the game, it seems, wouldn’t let him go so easily. Everyone has an opinion on Warnock. Whether they liked him or very much disliked him at different stages of his career, he continued to have a big impact on British football for longer than almost anyone else – that in itself seems like a fitting way to remember his career. These are the best moments across Warnock’s remarkable time in football. This iconic rant Neil warnock inspirational speech www.youtube.com Warnock moved around a lot in his career but it was arguably his time as Sheffield United boss from 2000-2007 which people will most remember him for. We’re just grateful that the fly-on-the-wall TV documentary Warnock exists, giving us an insight into the dressing room. It’s full of great insight into the inner sanctions of the football club at the time, but the best moment is this incandescent tongue-lashing from the boss, questioning the players’ motivation after a poor performance. “You’re picking up a wage up… that’s a load of b*******! You’ve got to f***ing die to get three points!” he screams at one point, while it also gives us an incongruous line about the players and their ‘missus’ that still takes us by surprise all these years later. He always made time for his fans Even when he was out on his bike, being approached by fans in moving cars, he always found the time to say “eyup son”. Staring down the camera Neil Warnock stares down the camera | Neil Warnock discusses that infamous moment. www.youtube.com We’ll be honest, we don’t really know what Warnock was thinking with this clip, but getting stared down by one of the angriest men in football isn’t a particularly pleasant experience. His love of Paddy Kenny Paddy Kenny reveals how Neil Warnock REALLY reacted to that Kevin Muscat headbutt www.youtube.com Managers certainly have their favourites, and Warnock signed Paddy Kenny no fewer than five times during his career. One story that seemed to perfectly sum up their relationship came during an ill-tempered game against Millwall, which saw Kenny headbutted at halftime by their imposing defender Kevin Muscat. At first, Warnock praised Kenny for backing himself and seemed glad that he’d not backed down. However, a few moments later Kenny was summoned to the referee’s office to be given a red card. After he’d been sent off, Warnock wasn’t so supportive of him – making him sit in the shower for the rest of the game. When he told Gary Lineker to f*** off Neil Warnock Tells Gary Lineker To F*** Off On Match Of The Day www.youtube.com We guess Warnock was never the biggest fan of the Match of the Day presenter after seeing this. Giving us classic quotes like this Neil Warnock "Enjoy it by being disciplined" - Arsenal Away www.youtube.com “Enjoy it by all means, but enjoy it by being f***ing disciplined.” This is the kind of Warnock quote that rattles around my head on a daily basis. His flair for the dramatic Neil Warnock stares down referees | Neil Warnock opens up on that moment at Cardiff City vs Chelsea. www.youtube.com There was always a touch of melodrama to Warnock’s pitch-side behaviour, and nothing summed this up more than the time he stood staring at the officials with his hands on his head after being on the receiving end of a controversial decision against Chelsea. Handing out signed pictures of himself Neil Warnock hands out signed pictures of himself ? | #Shorts youtube.com Why waste time standing around with a pen in your hand signing signatures when you can just carry signed pictures of yourself in a bum bag? Genius. He was still doing a great job until the end In some ways, the job he did with Huddersfield last season is the best achievement of his career, proving that he could still do an incredible job well into his 70s. Since joining the Terriers in a terrible state well into the season in February, he helped them pick up 25 points to drag them from 23rd place up to safety. He did such a good job, in fact, that we wouldn’t be surprised if another club tries to bring him on board to save them from relegation at some point in the near future. He couldn’t unretire again, could he? Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Harry Kane signs new deal and fans are confused
Harry Kane has signed a brand new deal – but not exactly the sort fans might have been expecting. As supporters continue to speculate about the striker’s future at Tottenham, it’s been revealed that Kane has agreed to a new boots deal with Sketchers. Barstool Football reports that Kane has signed a major lifetime deal to help launch the first-ever high-end boots from the US shoe brand. It comes after Kane wore a pair of blacked-out "Mystery Pro Player Test Boot" in Tottenham’s friendly game against Shakhtar Donetsk. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter However, it’s not exactly the kind of deal Kane fans had expected the player to be signing this summer. There’s much speculation about his future in north London, after the England captain reportedly placed a time limit on any potential move to Bayern Munich. It was reported that the German giants’ latest offer was understood to be still at least £10m short of what Tottenham would accept. According to the Telegraph, Kane will abandon his pursuit of a transfer if no deal is agreed by the end of this week, with the German club believed to be preparing one final offer for the 30-year-old. Kane has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Tottenham. He did however manage to put any transfer drama behind him when he scored four goals in a 5-1 friendly win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Sunday (August 6). Meanwhile, Kane was feeling the heat off the pitch recently, after taking part on First We Feast's Hot Ones challenge. Have your say in our news democracy. Trump accused of ‘witness tampering in real time’ in Georgia election case ahead of expected indictment
Donald Trump has been accused of witness tampering in the Georgia election case where an indictment against the former president is expected this week. “I am reading reports that failed former Lt Governor of Georgia, Jeff Duncan, will be testifying before the Fulton County Grand Jury. He shouldn’t,” Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday, before doubling down on his baseless claims about election fraud. “I barely know him but he was, right from the beginning of this Witch Hunt, a nasty disaster for those looking into the Election Fraud that took place in Georgia.” Mr Trump was referring to Geoff Duncan, who served as the second in command to Governor Brian Kemp when Mr Trump was attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. “He refused having a Special Session to find out what went on, became very unpopular with Republicans (I refused to endorse him!), and fought the TRUTH all the way. A loser, he went to FNCNN!” Mr Trump added, seemingly in reference to the news networks Fox News and CNN. Mr Duncan appeared on CNN on Monday saying, “I’m going to refrain from any comment with the exception of saying, which was just pointed out, he did misspell my name”. On Monday, the court website for Fulton County, Georgia posted a document seeming to outline several charges against Mr Trump before it was taken down. The document was removed without explanation. The document was dated 14 August and named Mr Trump. The case was cited as “open”. A spokesperson for the District Attorney’s office told Reuters that the news agency’s report “that those charges were filed is inaccurate. Beyond that we cannot comment”. The news agency reported that the document, two pages in length, includes Violation Of The Georgia Rico (Racketeer Influenced And Corrupt Organizations) Act, Solicitation Of Violation Of Oath By Public Officer, Conspiracy To Commit False Statements and Writings and Conspiracy To Commit Forgery in the First Degree, in addition to other charges. District Attorney Fani Willis has been investigating Mr Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state and was expected to seek an indictment from a grand jury this week. It would be Mr Trump’s fourth indictment within the span of five months. Former US Attorney Barb McQuade wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that Mr Trump was “witness tampering in real time,” with his statement on Truth Social. MSNBC host Katie Phang added: “This is going to go so very badly for Trump…” Marcus Flowers, a Georgia Democrat, wrote: “He’s trying it! I don’t think it’s going to work well in Atlanta. It ain’t a small town!” Democratic political commentator Bakari Sellers said people “get their bonds denied and revoked for this type of behaviour”. Mr Trump also went on several additional rants against the Georgia grand jury and Ms Willis on Monday as an indictment appeared to be imminent. In one outburst on Monday morning, Mr Trump wrote: “WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL THE FULTON COUNTY GRAND JURY THAT I DID NOT TAMPER WITH THE ELECTION. “THE PEOPLE THAT TAMPERED WITH IT WERE THE ONES THAT RIGGED IT, AND SADLY, PHONEY FANI WILLIS, WHO HAS SHOCKINGLY ALLOWED ATLANTA TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS CITIES ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, HAS NO INTEREST IN SEEING THE MASSIVE AMOUNT OF EVIDENCE AVAILABLE, OR FINDING OUT WHO THESE PEOPLE THAT COMMITTED THIS CRIME ARE. “SHE ONLY WANTS TO ‘GET TRUMP.’ I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHOW THIS INFO TO THE G.J.” Read More Trump’s Georgia case presented to grand jury as ex-president may face racketeering charges - latest No matter how many indictments come down, it’s still Donald Trump’s Republican Party 'No Labels' movement says it could offer bipartisan presidential ticket in 2024

Roy Hodgson expects to be leading Crystal Palace for last time on Sunday
Roy Hodgson insisted he expects to be taking charge of Crystal Palace for the final time in Sunday’s Premier League season-ender at home to Nottingham Forest, but did not rule out staying on. Hodgson took the reins at his boyhood club for the second time on a short-term contract after the sacking of Patrick Vieira, and has taken 17 points from nine games to steer Palace well clear of relegation trouble. Such has been the turnaround in form that Hodgson has been seen as a candidate to take the job on a longer-term basis, but the 75-year-old said that was not on his mind. “As far as I’m concerned, this is my last game,” Hodgson said. “I signed a contract here until the end of the season and I was grateful to do so. All along, I have seen this as my last game on my contract and as far as I’m concerned that’s what it is.” When asked if he would be open to staying on if asked by chairman Steve Parish, Hodgson added: “I don’t know, I’ll wait until that day arrives if it ever arrives. At the moment I don’t have to concern myself with that. “What’s on my table is to see my contract out, thank everyone for the last two and a half months and hopefully help the team get a result…I hope to leave all my options open.” Hodgson confirmed that Wilfried Zaha – out of contract this summer – will miss Sunday’s match through injury, raising the possibility that the in-demand forward has played his final game for the club. “Wilfried’s injury was sufficiently severe to keep him out of the next game,” Hodgson said. “He’ll need a week or two more to recover, so it won’t keep him out of next season. He will be fit for pre-season, but we won’t have the benefit of him on Sunday.” Palace forward Ebere Eze has been celebrating his first international call up after being included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad to face Malta and North Macedonia next month, and former Three Lions boss Hodgson has offered the 24-year-old some pointers. “The advice basically, after the congratulations – because as you say I am delighted for him and I’m happy Gareth (Southgate) and Steve (Holland) have seen what we have seen in him as well – but the only advice I can give him is to be himself,” he said. “Go there and be relaxed enough to show how good he is. Show how good he is in training when he is here. If he does that, Gareth and Steve will be more than happy with him.” The pressure will be off for both sides in Sunday’s match at Selhurst Park, with Forest’s victory over Arsenal last weekend having ended the threat of relegation at the end of their first season back in the top flight. “[Cooper] has done a very good job,” Hodgson said. “In particular I think the last five games they have had an incredible upsurge in form. They have taken 10 points from their last five games. That’s top of table form not avoiding relegation form. “They have taken everyone by surprise at the bottom who are fighting relegation, because many clubs thought they wouldn’t do that well. Hats off to him, hats off to his players and staff. It was very touching last weekend when they beat Arsenal and you saw the scenes after the game. “It makes you realise how much staying in this league and doing well means to everyone, not just to your staff and people at the club but also to the fans.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Stormers boss John Dobson praises Munster’s ‘phenomenal’ run to URC final Jonny Hill urges Sale to seize the moment in Premiership final against Saracens Man City claim title for third successive time – The 2022-23 season in pictures
