A woman who says skin cancer treatment has left her looking like Freddy Krueger is urging others to respect the sun. Melissa Lewis, 48, has been living with skin cancer for more than a decade. She has annual treatment which gives her skin a pockmarked look, which she has compared to that of Krueger, a fictional killer. Melissa, from Sydney, Australia, hopes the yearly procedure will keep her cancer at bay. But she wants to speak out to warn others of the harm sun exposure can do, before it’s too late. The mum-of-four, a former nurse, said: “When they said I have Bowen’s disease I thought that was it. “When I looked it up I was like, ‘Oh my god, I am never going to be free’. It is something I have to keep on top of. “I have treatment once a year. I hate it, it is really stressful as I know my skin will hurt. “I will have up to 14 days looking like Freddy Krueger, I can’t go out in public. “I look at my own kids when I have had the treatment and they find it hard to look at me. “I tell them that this is why you put sunscreen on, this is why you are careful.” Melissa first spotted a basal cell carcinoma - a sign of skin cancer - on her leg in 2011. She has since found them on her forehead, nose, chest and back and has lost count of how many have been removed. But in 2018, Melissa discovered what looked like a group of freckles lumped together in front of her ear. Thinking it was best to get it checked out, she paid a visit to her dermatologist. Melissa was then referred her to the Melanoma Institute in June 2018 - which confirmed she had a melanoma. “I was very lucky to have caught it when I did,” she said. “It did make me think that, ‘This is it’. The dread I experienced when I heard that word was really intense. “Having four kids thinking I am not going to be there with them was so overwhelming. “You automatically fast forward to the worst-case scenario.” A month after her diagnosis, Melissa had her melanoma removed. And, two months after her surgery, a biopsy revealed Melissa had Bowen’s disease - an early form of skin cancer. Melissa said: “I am never going to be free from this. “Basically if I don’t have my cancers removed, it can become a more serious invasive cancer.” Since she was diagnosed with Bowen’s syndrome, Melissa undergoes a yearly none-surgical cancer treatment - Photodynamic therapy. Photodynamic therapy is a treatment that involves light-sensitive medicine and a light source to destroy abnormal cells. Sam Johnstone - £4.4m Consider bringing in Sam Johnstone to stand between the sticks. With Nottingham Forest now safe, expect Steve Cooper's side to take their foot off the gas in their final game against Crystal Palace. The English shot-stopper has averaged over four points per game in his 12 appearances in the League this season, and Palace's recent form, which includes three clean sheets in their last seven, should give you hope that Johnstone could punch above his averages. Crucially, at just £4.4m, Johnstone would allow you to re-direct funds from goal to more important areas of the squad. Mohamed Salah - £13.1m The Egyptian winger has enjoyed yet another astonishing season in terms of output, which has perhaps slipped under the radar given the exploits of Erling Haaland and Liverpool's struggles. Against an already relegated Southampton, the dynamic forward is an essential pick and is a strong candidate for captaincy. James Maddison - £7.8m Cometh the hour, cometh the man? Leicester's talisman simply must perform against West Ham if his side have any chance at staying up. His (and Leicester's) attacking output has actually been quite respectable (currently his second-best season for goals in the Premier League), despite their league position, and the maverick midfielder grabbed a goal in the reverse fixture at the London Stadium. Eberechi Eze - £5.7m A favourite of The Independent’s FPL newsletter, it just feels wrong to leave out the inspired Eberechi Eze for this final gameweek. Whilst sentimentality may have had a small part to play, the English midfielder's numbers speak for themselves, with Eze standing as the top-scoring Crystal Palace asset this season - no mean feat, given competition from the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Michael Olise, Vicente Guaita and Jordan Ayew. His final fixture is a kind one, too, as outlined above for our goalkeeper pick this week - Forest need to be wary of the threat Eze poses if they stand any chance. Rico Lewis - £3.8m An outside choice - but why not consider the ridiculously cheap Rico Lewis for the final day? City proved that a clean sheet with a much-rotated XI (we daren't use the words 'weaker' and 'Manchester City' in the same sentence) is possible against Chelsea in GW37, and we should expect to see a similar number of fringe players in the squad for the Brentford game. As much as selection is a guessing game with Pep Guardiola, Lewis seems like a strong candidate to start, given the upcoming FA Cup and Champions League finals for City. Scientists have spent 20 years putting together time-lapse footage offering a stunning window into the past. Two decades of data taken from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory were used by astronomers to create a video of a stellar eruption that actually occurred 180 years ago. Observations from Chandra, taken in 1999, 2003, 2009, 2014 and 2020 were all used, in combination with data from ESA’s XMM-Newton spacecraft. With the combined data, experts were able to capture the stellar explosion, known as Eta Carinae. Eta Carinae is a famous star system containing two large stars, one of which is around 90 times larger than the Sun, while the other is around 30 times as large. The “Great Eruption” from Eta Carinae is believed to be the result of the merging of two stars that were originally part of a three-star system. Eta Carinae Time-Lapse, Chandra X-ray Observatory www.youtube.com It first took place in the mid-19th century and the aftermath is still continuing to be observed today. New footage shows how the explosion has expanded into space with staggering speeds of up to 4.5 million miles per hour. In a statement, NASA officials explained: “During this event, Eta Carinae ejected between 10 and 45 times the mass of the sun. This material became a dense pair of spherical clouds of gas, now called the Homunculus Nebula, on opposite sides of the two stars.” The Homunculus Nebula is the blue cloud visible in the video, while the growing bright orange ring shows how X-ray emissions have grown and expanded over time. “The new movie of Chandra, plus a deep, summed image generated by adding the data together, reveal important hints about Eta Carinae’s volatile history,” the statement read. “This includes the rapid expansion of the ring, and a previously-unknown faint shell of X-rays outside it.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy.
