Influencer quits social media after admitting she killed two cats
A lifestyle influencer and self-styled “mummy blogger” has quit social media after being pummelled with abuse after making a disturbing admission. Emma Claiir said she’d been subjected to a flood of death threats and harassment from “haters trying to ruin [her] life” after speaking openly about some worrying incidents from her past. During a discussion on her ‘Simply Chaotic’ podcast back in April, Claiir told listeners that she had killed not one, but two cats when she was a child. In a statement posted to Instagram on Monday, the mum-of-one said she’d been left suicidal and had gone into hiding because of the resulting outcry. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In the clip, Claiir confessed to her co-host: “I killed my cat,” before stressing that she “didn’t mean to”. “I was young, I was a child, and I was like swinging my cat around – I was just thinking it was like a stuffed toy and I accidentally let go of it and it died. It died from the fright.” She continued: “My sister did not speak to me for months – months – and my mum was f***king fuming at me.” She then added: “And then if you really want to know more about me, I also killed my best friend's cat.” @indigoreports Influencer Emma Claiir dropped from brand deals after ‘admitting to k!lling cats’ #emmaclaiir #influencer #aussieinfluencer #aussieinfluencers #aussieinfluenceropinions #influencernews #news #popculture #popculturenews #podcast #show #viraledits The brutal online backlash came not just from appalled fans, but from a number of brands who declared they would be ending their relationship with the 29-year-old. Claiir initially responded to the furore by doubling down, telling her followers via an Instagram story that it was all a “bit of light humour” and they needed to “chill”. “I was a small child,” she pointed out, before adding: “After that accident, I have been the best mother to multiple cats.” However, after the retribution and threats showed no sign of abating, she issued a more considered statement, apologising for her behaviour. She conceded that the story was “not light humour” but was, in fact, “very serious”. “I have taken time to think about my actions and want to confirm that I do have empathy about the situation,” she stressed. “It’s not something I am proud of as it really hurt myself and my family 21 years ago.” And yet, two months after that fateful podcast segment, Claiir revealed that her whole life had been turned upside down. In her lengthy Instagram statement, posted on 26 June, she wrote: “As most of you know I gave birth on the 12.4.23 to the most amazing, precious little boy and he changed my life completely. “I was so excited to share my life with you all, share where things were from and just be real with my postpartum journey and experiences with my baby. “But unfortunately that all became not possible when I shared a story from when I was kid on my podcast. I quickly became cancelled and the death threats started rolling in.” Claiir then insisted that the story had been blown “out of proportion” and “turned into something it never was”. “People started a witch hunt on me and were doing everything to make sure my life was ruined,” she continued. “I lost my job, my mental health was impacted massively and people were just having a laugh about it.” She said she then decided to take a “small break” from social media to spend more time with her son but, once she returned, “people decided it was OK to spread cheating rumours, make up lies and try to continue to ruin the life of a new mother who was already pretty open about her mental health struggles in life”. The 29-year-old said that even people she’d considered close friends “joined in on the lies and rumours”, even sharing her private messages online. Describing this as “breaking point” for her, she said she “started to feel unsafe in [her] own home” as the death threats, lies and rumours grew louder and louder. “My mental health finally crumbled. I entered a very dark space that was extremely scary and unfamiliar,” she went on. “I was constantly telling myself that the only thing that would make this all go away is if I took my own life. The only way to make the haters happy is if I disappeared for good and officially left this world. “Maybe my son and my husband really would be better off with out me and I should just let them go, maybe my friends and family would also be better off with out me so I should just let them go. “These are thoughts no new mother should be having.” Claiir wrapped up her impassioned monologue by saying she had since sought “professional help” for her anxiety and depression and was now on “the right path”. She then said that it was now “officially time to say goodbye to Emma Claiir,” adding: “Will it be forever? I don’t know yet.” But, she insisted, she felt proud that she was now “taking back ownership of her life”. Have your say in our news democracy. Maryland police have DNA matching Rachel Morin murder suspect and video images but no identity
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday they have used DNA evidence to identify a potential suspect in the murder of Maryland woman Rachel Morin earlier this month. Colonel William Davis said DNA found at the scene of Morin’s death was analysed by state police, turning up a match with DNA found at the scene of a March home invasion in Los Angeles where a young girl was attacked. “Unfortunately that suspect has not been positively identified, but he did leave behind his DNA,” Colonel Davis said. “Based on the DNA evidence, we consider the individual in the video we received from the Los Angeles Police Department to be the person that murdered Rachel Morin on August 5.” The individual, a shirtless man thought to be in his 20s, was recorded leaving the LA crime scene on a home security camera. The deputy added that despite the match, police still “don’t have a clue where he could be.” “In March he was in California, and here in August he was in Maryland,” the officer said. This is a breaking news story and will be updated with new information.

Aidan Roche missing: All we know about British hiker who vanished in the Swiss Alps
A British hiker has been missing in the Swiss Alps for more than a month, as his family continue the search to find him. Aidan Roche, 29, travelled to Switzerland for a two-week solo holiday in June, where he planned to track a mountain trail in the Grindelwald area. He was last heard from on 22 June, twelve days into his two-week trip and there has been no trace of him since. His brother Connor said of the experienced hiker: “It’s not something he wouldn’t have been able to manage. But sometimes you know, all it takes is a freak occurrence for something to go wrong.” His family and friends have set up GoFundMe page to help support further search efforts, as they say the Swiss police and mountain rescue service have ceased their efforts having “exhausted every option”. The campaign has now exceeded its £30,000 goal, with funds going towards generating new leads by raising awareness in the area, as well as the use of a search helicopter. Below we look at everything we know about search so far. Who is Aidan Roche? Aidan Roche is an experienced hiker from Middlesbrough. The 6ft 2in tall 29 year-old works as an offshore chemical engineer. He grew up in Longlands, a central Middlesbrough neighbourhood, and was living in Leeds at the time he went missing. He had planned to move back to Middlesbrough after his trip. “He’s a character and this solo travel thing is exactly the type of thing he loves,” his brother Connor has said. “He can talk to absolutely everyone and he can just make friends with anyone.” Aidan’s friend Beth Taylor says he had a distinctive tattoo on his arm reading “MAYASWELLMAYSENYA” and loved to play “blaring” music from a speaker as he walked. Where was he last seen? A video taken at 11:36am BST places Roche a short distance away from the village of Grindelwald, which sits at the foot of the Eiger mountain. Friends say this is the last footage he sent to them. In this video, and two others sent on the same day, other hikers can be seen in the background.Ms Taylor posted an appeal on TikTok, asking anyone with information about these people to come forward – it has been viewed 26,000 times. She says his family are looking for a woman seen sitting on a rock in a video filmed at 11:05 BST and five people near a waterfall filmed in the final video. “I know he would have spoken to the girl sitting near him in the video, and the people walking towards him. We’re just hoping that someone can identify them and give us a new lead.” The family have also released Aidan’s last text messages before he went missing, sent to an unnamed friend, where the 29-year-old wrote: “Hello, hello. I should be in Grindelwald in about two hours,” followed by a picture of the view from the trail, and his final message: “I’m still pretty high. I’ll see you back at camp.” What is the latest on the search? Mr Roche’s family went to Switzerland on 21 July to try and find him themselves. They have been forced to continue the search alone after the Swiss police and mountain rescue teams ended their efforts after ‘exhausting every option. This is proving costly, so the family and friends have launched a GoFundMe appeal so they can keep going. His brother Connor Roche provided an update on 30 July: “We just need some more information. We’ve had nothing coming in from any of the missing posters. “We’ve also now been given the bill for the search helicopter, which came to £7k.” His other brother Niall explained how the search effort went: There’s none of his bag or anything that he had with him. It doesn’t make sense how we haven’t found anything. From the timestamp of the picture he sent, it’s about 90 minutes of hiking and it’s not particularly difficult.” What have his friends and family said? In her TikTok video, Mr Taylor said Mr Roche had “biggest heart” and would “do anything for anyone”. Speaking to the Guardian, Connor Roche said: “I try and keep up hope that maybe he’s decided to wander off, or he’s hit his head and forgotten who he is, but I have to drag myself back to what we actually know and the evidence suggests that he’s still on the mountain and we haven’t found him yet. There’s the outside chance that he has some crazy survival story.” “You can’t help but imagine the worst of things sometimes – especially with it being this long since he went missing. “But then you feel guilty for imagining those things. Right now we just need more information – anything that can help us find him and bring him home.” Read More Brother’s desperate plea to find British hiker, 29, who vanished in Swiss Alps British Scouts attending South Korea jamboree moved to hotels after illness outbreak ‘Love, obsession, extortion and murder’: The dramatic downfall of TikTok influencer who became a killer Chef Tafari Campbell’s death ‘not suspicious’ as Obama daughters leave island Boris Johnson vows to protect newts threatening plans for pool at his country manor British Scouts pulled from South Korea jamboree as hundreds struck down by heatwave
