Harry Maguire’s move to West Ham collapses with Man Utd future unclear
Harry Maguire’s £30 million move to West Ham is off, with the England defender now likely to stay at Manchester United. The two clubs had agreed a fee for the centre back, who had been stripped of the Man United captaincy this summer. But Maguire would have had to take a substantial cut in his wages to leave Old Trafford, with his Man United salary going up this summer after Erik ten Hag’s team qualified for the Champions League, and no pay-off was agreed. Ten Hag has always said that he regards Maguire as a valuable member of his squad and wanted the former Leicester, Hull and Sheffield United player to stay and fight for his place. He was on the bench for Monday’s 1-0 win over Wolves, though Ten Hag brought on Victor Lindelof ahead of him. Man United were also concerned that Maguire’s departure this late in the window would not have given them much time to find a replacement, though Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard would have been one contender. West Ham, who have signed midfielders Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse with the proceeds of Declan Rice’s £105million sale to Arsenal, are now expected to switch their attention to other defensive targets. The former Man United midfielder Jesse Lingard, who had a successful loan spell under David Moyes in 2021/22, is also training with West Ham and available on a free transfer after leaving Nottingham Forest. Mystery behind brightest explosion ever seen is finally solved
The mystery behind the brightest explosion ever seen has finally been solved. In October last year, the Earth was hit by a blast that came to be known as the Brightest of All Time. It was recorded by telescopes across the world, and scientists have been scrambling to explain it ever since. Now researchers believe they may understand why that gamma ray burst was quite so intense. It was pointed directly at Earth and pulled along a large amount of stellar material. That’s according to a new paper published in the journal Science Advances. While scientists have suggested before that the brightness of the blast was the result of its angle, but some mystery remained: the edges of the jet could not be seen. “The slow fade of the afterglow is not characteristic of a narrow jet of gas, and knowing this made us suspect there was an additional reason for the intensity of the explosion, and our mathematical models have borne this out,” said Hendrik Van Earthen from the University of Bath. “Our work clearly shows that the GRB had a unique structure, with observations gradually revealing a narrow jet embedded within a wider gas outflow where an isolated jet would normally be expected.” The work is described in a new paper, ‘A structured jet explains the extreme GRB 221009’, published in the journal Science Advances. Manchester United suffer another blow as iShowSpeed declares he’s 'no longer a fan'
It's more bad news for Manchester United... YouTuber iShowSpeed has declared he's "no longer a fan" after their recent defeat. After losing 3-2 at home to Galatasaray, the Red Devils losing in the Champions League group stages on Tuesday. During the game, it was Rasmus Hojlund who provided the two goals in the 17th and 67th minutes to put them 2-1 ahead after Zaha scored for Galatasaray in the 23rd minute. But things fell apart for United with 20 minutes remaining when Onana's misjudged pass was intercepted by Dries Mertens, who was then brought down in the box by Casemiro and he got sent off for this. Despite missing the penalty, Mauro Icardi soon scored to secure victory for the Turkish club. This loss for Man Utd comes after their previous 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich and United are now at the bottom of their group. Furthermore, it also adds to the side's poor form this season of six defeats in 10 games. For iShowSpeed, it's proven to be the straw that broke the camel's back. He's been one of the most vocal United fans online for some time now, but it looks like the YouTube star has had enough, taking to Twitter/X to share his dismay at the Premier League side while he also added that manager Ten Hag and summer signing Andre Onana should be “outlawed”. The creator had previously expressed his love for the club as well as going viral for his tearful reaction to meeting United legend and Al Nassr player Cristiano Ronaldo. “That’s it. That seals the deal. I am no longer a United fan," he tweeted last night (October 3). The streamer, who is only 18-years-old, then jokingly added: “I’ve been a United member since 1987 and a season ticket holder since 1999. “I’m not going to renew my season ticket. Ten Hag and Onana are outlawed as of today. “I will become a fan of Al Nassr now, where they actually know how to run a football club," referring to Ronaldo's current team. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for United... Elsewhere, Manchester United's Hannah Blundell will perhaps be disappointed by this news after she responded to an iShowSpeed clip when he opened the footballer in an Ultimate Team pack on the new EA Sports FC 24 game. 'Surfer man' with long hair and shorts in 1917 photograph hailed as 'proof' of time travel
The appearance of a long-haired surfer dude in a vintage picture from 1917 has sparked theories about time travel. The picture, titled “Last Picnic” was taken more than 100 years ago, at San Josef Bay on Vancouver Island in Canada, in 1917. It depicts a group of people, both adults and children, sitting on a hill. The outfits of most in the picture are what would be considered old-fashioned today. The women are wearing ankle-length skirts and bonnets, while most of the men are dressed in shirts and smart trousers, with some even in waistcoats and ties. But, while most of the people in the image are dressed according to the times, some eagle-eyed viewers spotted one “surfer man” who wore baggy shorts and a large t-shirt and looked like he was straight out of the 20th century. The long-haired man has seemingly attracted the attention of those around him as one man next to him appears to be staring at him, while a woman standing on the right of the image looks to be pointing in his direction. The picture was shared online by YouTuber, Jamie D. Grant, who came across the interesting picture in Lester Ray Peterson’s 1974 historical book, The Great Cape Scott Story. He questioned whether the image was “proof” of time travel, saying: “Notice the group, their clothes, their hats. Even how they sit poised for a photo. “Now look closer. His head uncovered, his hair, his shorts. The man on the left stares in disbelief. Has a mysterious traveler proved the impossible and journey through time? What do you think?” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy.
