A terminally ill Wrexham fan who met Ryan Reynolds as his final wish has died of cancer. Jay Fear, who has passed away at the age of 45, was invited by Reynolds to see Wrexham win promotion to the National League last month. Wrexham co-owner Reynolds said he “got a little choked up” after fulfilling Fear’s dying wish and spending time with his family before his death. Fear was re-diagnosed with terminal appendix cancer in January after being given the all clear the previous year. He said Reynolds was his “idol” and the experience of meeting the Hollywood star was an experience his family would “never forget”. The Deadpool star had also extended an invite to the set of the third film in the popular superhero series, which is due to be released in November 2024. Fear said of his meeting with Reynolds to BBC Radio 5 Live: “They always say you should never met your idol and this guy is definitely an exception to that. “I’ve always loved Ryan Reynolds - ever since [2002 film] Van Wilder. I remember watching that for the first time and thinking that guy was cool. “I started watching the Wrexham programme on Disney+ and when you watch that you can’t help but love Wrexham. “People might think this whole thing was for me. Actually, this is for my family because they are the ones that are going to remember what happened for the rest of their lives. I just hope this is a core memory that they’ll never forget.” Reynolds said he was “so grateful” to have met Fear and host his family for Wrexham’s 3-1 win over Boreham Wood. “It was amazing to meet Jay,” Reynolds told the BBC last month. “I wonder if I’d have the same unwavering joy if our roles were reversed. “He is an exceptional person and his family is wonderful. While there are agreements to restrict arms and trade, “there are no real restrictions on weaponisation”, he said. Mr Zelensky was addressing the gathering at a sensitive point in his country’s campaign to maintain international support for its fight. Nearly 19 months after Moscow launched a full-scale invasion, Ukrainian forces are three months into a counteroffensive that has not gone as fast or as well as initially hoped. “We must stand up to this naked aggression today and deter other would-be aggressors tomorrow,” Joe Biden earlier told the assembly. The world must remain united in defending Ukraine, he said, warning that no nation can be secure if “we allow Ukraine to be carved up”. A French appeals court on Wednesday upheld a one-year prison sentence for former President Nicolas Sarkozy on a conviction for corruption and influence peddling. His lawyer said he will take the case to France’s highest court and insisted that Sarkozy is innocent. The 68-year-old ex-president would not have to serve time until a final ruling, and if definitively convicted, he could ask to serve his sentence at home. Sarkozy, 68, was convicted in 2021 of trying to bribe a magistrate in exchange for information about a legal case in which he was implicated. It was the first time in modern French history that a former president had been convicted of corruption and sentenced to prison. Sarkozy, who was president from 2007 to 2012, denies wrongdoing and appealed the original ruling. The Paris appeals court on Wednesday upheld the conviction and the sentence, according to a court official. His lawyer, Jacqueline Laffont, called the decision “stupefying” and “unjust.” Sarkozy is entitled to ask to be detained at home with an electronic bracelet, standard practice for sentences of two years or less. He also received a two-year suspended sentence, which he will not have to serve if he commits no new offense in the next five years. It is one of multiple legal cases Sarkoky has faced.
