Scientists invent double-sided solar panel that generates vastly more electricity
Researchers have invented a double-sided solar panel capable of generating electricity from the Sun’s energy on both sides. The bifacial solar cell, developed at the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), harvests reflected sunlight hitting the back of the device, offering an unconventional route to producing higher energy yields for less space and cost. Typical advances to solar cell efficiency rates centre on iterative improvements to the side facing the Sun. This new approach could boost the energy harvesting capabilities of solar panels beyond their theoretical limit. “This perovskite cell can operate very effectively from either side,” said Kai Zhu, a scientist at the Chemistry and Nanoscience Center at NREL who led the research. Current solar cell technologies, which use silicon as the semiconductor material, have an efficiency rate of around 26 per cent – higher than the 23 per cent achieved in lab tests by the front side of the new panel. The back side of the panel, however, achieves an efficiency of about 91-93 per cent of the front, which offers up to 20 per cent more power overall when harvesting reflected sunlight. Perovskite has become a key driver of solar cell advancements in recent years, breaking new efficiency records and providing new pathways to creating next-generation technologies. Earlier this week, researchers unveiled perovskite-based solar cells capable of healing themselves when damaged by radiation in low-Earth orbit. Tandem silicon-perovskite solar cells have achieved lab-measured efficiency of more than 30 per cent, and have a theoretical limit far higher than purely silicon cells. Rapid progress with their development has seen two separate startups announce commercial production of the next-generation panels. Producing the bifacial solar panels would cost more than monofacial modules, however their capacity to produce more power could make them more economically viable over time. The latest research was detailed in a study, titled ‘Highly efficient bifacial single-junction perovskite solar cells’, published in the journal Joule. Pub offered women free drinks based on their bra size – and it went down as well as you'd expect
An Australian pub has issued a public apology after its attempt at a light-hearted promo campaign went down like a pint of warm beer. The Woolshed on Hindley, in Adelaide, offered punters free drinks in exchange for their bras, telling them: “The bigger, the better.” In a now-deleted Facebook ad, customers were instructed to “hang your bra in the shed” in order to bag themselves a beverage – and the larger the cup size, the larger the reward. According to the online poster, an A cup would get you one free drink, a B cup would get you two and a C cup would get you three. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Bras were hung up on the walls of the nightclub to encourage people to contribute their own, the Daily Mail reports. But it didn't all go as planned. Social media was soon flooded with angry comments about the “misogynistic” and “offensive” campaign. "We’ve just set the female gender back several decades,” one wrote, according to The Advertiser. “Was a terrible idea from the get go. Whoever came up with it and then allowed it to be shared should be in big trouble, seriously inappropriate stuff,” said another. On Sunday, the Woolshed published a grovelling message expressing its remorse for the misguided idea. It read: “We would like to address the concerns that have been raised regarding a recent social media post shared by our nightclub. We sincerely apologise for the fact that the post made some of our patrons feel uncomfortable and body-shamed as this was never our intention. “Based on the feedback from our community we have cancelled the promotion and are workshopping ideas for different promotions that promote a fun, safe and inclusive environment for all. Moving forward senior management will be reviewing all promotional activity to ensure that it creates an inclusive environment for all our patrons.” However, plenty of commentators were quick to laugh off the situation. “I was looking [forward] to the 8 free drinks, people need to lighten up a little,” one wrote. “What is happening with this world?” asked another. “No one was being forced to do something they didn’t want to do! If people were offended by what the promotion was then just don’t go!” Have your say in our news democracy. Jude Bellingham relishing chance to play part in ‘brilliant’ Real Madrid history
Jude Bellingham has set his sights on sitting alongside the greats of Real Madrid’s history following his dream move to the Spanish giants. Bellingham sealed a 103million euros (£88.5m) transfer to the Bernabeu from Borussia Dortmund last month, cementing his position as one of the hottest young talents in Europe. The 20-year-old is aware of the list of stars that have pulled on the famous white shirt over the years, previously citing Zinedine Zidane as a role model, but is targeting a long and successful career of his own. “That is the motivation for the move in the first place, I want to be at a club that is going to be competing for titles and I want to try and help the team and club be as brilliant as it has been for all of time really,” he told the PA news agency. “Now is my chance to be part of that history and that goes hand in hand because I know the club wants to win and I want to win so hopefully it will happen. “It grabs you on its own, the size of the club is already surreal when you think about it, but when you add into that the project they have got in place, it was really important I made this step because it is just the place to be for me.” For most, the prospect of joining Real Madrid in a big-money move at such a young age would be daunting, but Bellingham’s journey has stood him in good stead. Having made his debut for Birmingham as a 16-year-old and then joining Dortmund one year later, he has done things differently. And that means the price tag certainly will not weigh heavy on him. “I have had a very different experience to most young players, especially young English players,” he said. “My journey has taken me to three different countries, without playing in the Premier League, so it is very different. “I am always reminded of it when I am away with the national team and see the journeys of the other players. “But it is something I am really proud of, the risks I have taken and long may it continue. I just try and take everything in my stride really. “Pressure has followed me everywhere to this point. I was 15 and 16 when I started playing with the first team at Birmingham and felt that like a pressure that could be matched by no other really, so at each stage of my life the pressure has increased. “Until now I have always proved I can handle it and if I was worried about it I probably wouldn’t have made the move. “Because I know I have the right people around me to support me through it I think it is a great fit.” Bellingham may now be one of the most recognisable names in the game, but it was not too long ago that he was playing on the parks of Stourbridge as a child. He is now an ambassador for McDonald’s Fun Football programme, the largest grassroots programme in the UK for 5-11 year olds, where 250,000 children have had access to free football in the last 12 months. Bellingham added: “This is massively important, you look around and see the environment that McDonald’s has created, all these girls and boys, whatever ages, just coming together and playing football without pressure and with loads of smiles. It’s a great initiative and to celebrate 250,000 kids being given the opportunity to play football this season is just brilliant. We’ve had a great day. “I remember my mum and dad taking me to stuff like this all the time, where it is just about enjoyment. “These are the kind of days that properly get you into the game, I am not looking around thinking, ‘I wonder who is going to be the next superstar’ but you never know how it affects the mindset of one of these kids, in terms of chasing the dream of being a footballer.” ::Jude Bellingham was speaking at the largest ever McDonald’s Fun Football session to celebrate the landmark of over 250,000 children across the UK benefiting from access to free football this season. Battery breakthrough brings ‘unprecedented performance’ to next-gen cells
A battery breakthrough made by researchers in Japan could pave the way for next-generation batteries to finally enter mass production. A team from Tokyo University of Science discovered a way to build sodium-ion batteries with an equivalent performance to conventional lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion, or li-ion, batteries are found in everything from electric cars to smartphones, however they are made from difficult-to-extract and expensive resources, while also containing liquid electrolytes that are toxic and flammable. By contrast, sodium-ion batteries are cheaper, offer stability against extreme temperatures, and pose no risk of overheating. Until now, their main limitation has been a lower energy density compared to li-ion batteries. To overcome this limitation, the scientists developed a high-capacity electrode made from nanostructured hard carbon, which they were able to optimise and then incorporate into an actual battery. The researchers said the new electrodes deliver “unprecedented performance” and offer a viable option for producing next-generation batteries for consumer electronics and electric vehicles. “This value is equivalent to the energy density of certain types of currently commercialised lithium-ion batteries... and is more than 1.6 times the energy density of the first sodium-ion batteries, which our laboratory reported back in 2011,” said Professor Shinichi Komaba from Tokyo University of Science. The breakthrough could also make sodium-ion batteries viable for other practical applications, such as low carbon footprint energy storage systems for solar and wind farms. The research was detailed in a study, titled ‘New template synthesis of anomalously large capacity hard carbon for Na- and K-ion batteries’, published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials.
