The outspoken US senator Kyrsten Sinema has, along with other American lawmakers, attempted to get in on the Barbenheimer meme craze, with mixed results. If you've spent any time on the internet in the past few months, you'll no doubt have noticed a lot of memes about the movies Barbie and Oppenheimer, which you might have heard are being released on the exact same day (July 21st). Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Inevitably, all memes end up jumping the shark and this has now happened with Barbenheimer with several politicians getting in on the trend including Sinema. The controversial figure, who was once a Democrat representing the state of Arizona before becoming an independent in December 2022. On Thursday on the eve of the release of Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig's respective films, she tweeted: "Get you a Senator who can do both. #Barbenheimer." This was accompanied by a colour picture of her wearing a bright pink dress and a black and white picture of herself, thus representing the aesthetics of the two movies. Unfortunately for the 47-year-old her attempt at the meme didn't go down too well thus reflecting Sinema's overall popularity in the United States. Sinema wasn't alone, as many other Senators attempted their own Barbenheimer memes including John Fetterman and Ben Cardin. Lewis Hamilton accused George Russell of “dangerous” driving after the Mercedes team-mates collided at 200mph in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. But the seven-time world champion was forced to take to the grass after Russell, pre-occupied with Sainz ahead of him, closed the door. Hamilton kicked up dirt from the grass, while his right front-wing endplate flew off following contact with Russell. “George just backed off,” said Hamilton over the radio. “That is really dangerous. He pulled over to the left. I might have some damage on the car.” Although Hamilton’s time was good enough to progress to Q3, and limp back to the pits for repairs, Russell was eliminated. “You didn’t tell me there was a car behind,” said Russell. “I don’t know what the hell was going on in that session. The car was bouncing. I couldn’t get my tyres working.” Both Mercedes drivers were summoned to see the stewards to explain their version of events. Russell was let off the hook with a formal warning after he was adjudged not to have checked his mirrors. Hamilton, 38, revealed he cleared the air with Russell, 25, after he moved to draw a line under their first coming together as team-mates. “It was just a misunderstanding,” said Hamilton, who qualified fifth but moved up a place after Pierre Gasly was penalised for blocking in qualifying. “I have spoken to George. I went and shook his hand and that was it.” The Mercedes drivers were closer on track than desired after Russell aborted his previous lap. “Lewis was not aware that I was starting a quick lap,” said Russell. “I was looking ahead to get the slipstream from Sainz. “It was not something that either driver necessarily did wrong, but within the team it shouldn’t happen and the communication should have been better towards us.” Hamilton and Nico Rosberg – in the paddock on Saturday as a pundit for Sky Sports – collided on the opening lap here at the peak of their acrimonious relationship in 2016. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff threatened Hamilton and Rosberg with a ban if they collided again. And the Austrian was asked if Saturday’s qualifying collision between his current drivers evoked memories of that race in Spain seven years ago. “No, it wasn’t shades of 2016,” he said, with a wry smile. “I wish we were in the situation of 2016 where we’re so quick. “But it shouldn’t happen. Team-mates should never collide – and even with another car, you should never collide in qualifying. “Lewis saw it as his last opportunity and didn’t think that George was on that line. Billy Connolly has said that every day spent living with Parkinson’s disease “gets stranger”, as he shared an update on his health. The Scottish actor, 80, has been living with the condition since 2013, and said that the symptoms and lifestyle impacts of the disease often “creep up” on him. Parkinson’s is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and co-ordination. Often, the disease can become more severe over time. “Every day it gets stranger and more different,” the retired stand-up comedian told The Times. Connolly said that his newfound love for making drawings, painting and sculptures has helped him navigate the mental health toll of living with the condition. “I don’t know how I would have coped without drawing. It’s taken me out of the scene and put me somewhere else, where I can survey it from a different angle,” he said. “Art has made my life magical at a time when I thought it would be unbearable.” It’s been a decade since Connolly received his Parkinson’s diagnosis. The comedian was walking through the lobby of a Los Angeles hotel in 2013 when a fellow guest, a doctor, stopped him and said he shows physical signs of Parkinsons. This prompted Connolly to visit his doctor. “I’ll never forget what he said: ‘You have the gait of a Parkinson’s man,’” Connolly told the publication. According to Parkinson’s UK, Bradykinesia, which is a common condition among people with Parkinson’s, means slowness and a reduced range of movement when walking. It can make your steps smaller and it can take more time and effort to get around. When Connolly received his official diagnosis, he was also diagnosed with prostate cancer and gallstones in the same week. “It was a helluva week,” he said. “It got funny. My daughter Scarlett was with me in the ambulance on the way to the gallbladder surgery through Manhattan. The sirens were going – nee-naw nee-naw – and she said to me, ‘Is this your first Caribbean cruise?’ That’s a line I always said to her to make her laugh when her surroundings were awkward or boring.” During an interview published in September, it was revealed that Connolly had suffered “a couple of serious falls” and once broke his hip as a result of deteriorating balance. He no longer drives. Despite these growing physical challenges, the What We Did on Our Holiday star maintains a positive outlook on his health. In his memoir, Rambling Man: Life on the Road, which was released earlier this year, Connolly clarified that he doesn’t feel “close to death”. “You see, reports of my recent demise have been greatly exaggerated,” he stated in an extract shared with The Telegraph. “There was a week a few years ago where on Monday I got hearing aids, Tuesday I got pills for heartburn, and Wednesday I received news that I had prostate cancer and Parkinson’s disease.
