Russia-Ukraine war live: Putin’s losses ‘top 300,000’ as Moscow state media retracts reports of retreat
Russia’s military personnel losses in its invasion of Ukraine have crossed 300,000, showed estimates by the UK that also said thousands more have deserted the battlefield. James Heappey, minister of state for the armed forces, revealed the UK’s estimates of losses faced by Vladimir Putin since the start of the invasion in February last year. “We estimate that approximately 302,000 Russian military personnel have been killed or wounded, and tens of thousands more have already deserted since the start of the conflict,” he said on Tuesday in response to queries from John Healey, the shadow secretary of state for defence. The UK’s estimate of casualties is similar to the assessment made by Kyiv, that said Russia had lost a total 313,470 military personnel in combat as of Tuesday. It comes as two Russian state media agencies withdrew reports of military operations. The agencies – TASS and RIA Novosti – said that the Russian Ministry of Defence had announced relocations of troops to an unspecified “more advantageous positions” east of the Dnipro river. The potentially significant bulletins were available for about 10 minutes, after which two state news outlets withdrew them without any follow-up. Paris Hilton responds to 'sick' trolls mocking size of her son's head
Paris Hilton has hit back at people on the internet who mocked the physical appearance of her baby boy, Phoenix. The reality television stalwart had posted a picture of the child, who is nine months old, on Instagram, saying it was her “precious angel baby’s” first time in New York. But some commenters picked up on the size of Phoenix’s head. One person joked: “Y’all he’s just got a lot on his mind leave the kid alone.” Others speculated whether or not Phoenix’s large head was a result of a medical condition. Hotel heiress Hilton responded in the comments section: “There are some sick people in this world. “My angel is perfectly healthy. And yes, of course he has been to a doctor, he just has a large brain.” Hilton and her husband, businessman Carter Reum, welcomed Phoenix on 16 January. They married in 2021. After he was born, she told People magazine: “It’s always been my dream to be a mother, and I’m so happy that Carter and I found each other. “We are so excited to start our family together, and our hearts are exploding with love for our baby boy.” Her post featuring the child is the latest example of a celebrity posting a picture of their young children online, also known as sharenting, which has become an increasingly controversial practice. Some experts say parents should avoid posting pictures of their children until they are old enough to give consent. Earlier this year, politicians in France even put forward a bill which would stop mums and dads from making money by posting photos and videos of their kids. Nonetheless, commenters’ jibes on Hilton’s Instagram seem particularly cruel, given Phoenix has no way of defending himself. The negativity surrounding the post even made its way as far as TikTok, where one user posted a video defending the child. They said: “I think Phoenix is adorable... You know he just has a big head because he has a small body and he’s gonna grow into it. “And I also wanna bet that he’s a much cuter baby than most of these people in the comments were when they were babies... Leave Phoenix alone.” How to join the indy100's free WhatsApp channel Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. London Fashion Week: Jourdan Dunn walks in emotional Richard Quinn show
Jourdan Dunn appeared on the runway during an emotional evening for London Fashion Week favourite Richard Quinn. The British supermodel wore a strapless tulle dress with yellow and blue floral embroidery, and a black bow at the waist, part of Quinn’s spring/summer collection. The designer was in tears when came out to embrace his mother at the end of the show, which was dedicated to his late father. “In times of great sadness and loss comes a sense of reflection and calm,” read the show notes, which were accompanied by a photo of Patrick Quinn, who died in June. A handwritten caption printed on the other side said. ‘This one’s for you Dad’. A performance by five ballet dancers that opened the show – held in a ballroom at the historic Andaz hotel in East London – was billed as a celebration of “a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and husband”. Quinn – who famously won the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, presented by her late Majesty, in 2018 – has become known for his floral prints and almost couture-level of craftsmanship. The SS24 collection focused heavily on the latter, with a slew of stunning eveningwear ensembles. The first look was a ballerina-esque white full-skirted dress with sparkling embroidery, which was followed by a series of black and white outfits. Standout pieces included mesh dresses with embroidered boned skirts that looked like birdcages, and a lipstick red ruffled cape gown (one of the few brightly-coloured looks). Some column dresses were so heavily encrusted with sequins and beads, you could hear them rustle as models glided by, while other voluminous gowns appeared light as air. The contemplative mood was continued with the design of models’ make-up. “Slightly somber, slightly fragile, like a really beautiful Victorian portrait,” is how MAC make-up artist Terry Barber described the look. “It’s a shadowy grey eye, and I’m using a little metallic gold powder to do this very fine thread of liner. It almost looks like they’ve just cried and their eyes are a little bit wet.” Model ‘twins’ on the catwalk has become a signature of Quinn’s. This season, the chosen pair wore blue and white floral satin dresses embellished with white feathers and worn over matching tights, each carrying a large blue and white bouquet, They were followed by Canadian model Jessica Stam closing the show in a flowing white cape with puff sleeves worn over a silver beaded jumpsuit. After Quinn’s mother rose to greet her son, the audience joined her in giving the designer a standing ovation.
