Wrestling icon Adrian Street, who once battered Jimmy Savile, dies aged 82
Legendary British wrestler Adrian Street, who once beat up the notorious pedophile and presenter Jimmy Savile, has passed away aged 82. The trailblazing star whose career in the ring was known around the world, reportedly died at Cwmbran's Grange University Hospital in South Wales on Monday. His wife Linda, who also worked as his ringside manager and a wrestler, told the BBC: "He'd had a heart problem a while ago which was resolved. "But then he had a stroke earlier this month which resulted in a bleed on the brain. "He was recovering from that at home when he developed colitis - a chronic inflammatory bowel disease - which later turned into sepsis. That's what killed him. "It all came about so quick. I've still not come to terms with it yet." Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Street, who born in Blaenau Gwent, Wales in 1940 rose to prominence in the wrestling business in the 1970s and 1980s thanks to his androgynous and exotic persona but didn't pull any punches when the bell rang in the ring. During his career, Street claimed to have something in the region of 12 to 15,000 matches with his final bout occurring in June 2014 when competing in Birmingham, Alabama. One of his most infamous stories is that he was once booked in a match against Savile in 1971 at the height of the notorious figure's fame. Of the fight, Street is quoted as saying: "The promoters were trying to put Savile across as a bit of a tough guy. "But I was having none of it. I kicked his legs from underneath him, then I picked him up by his hair, held him upside down and dropped him on his skull. "Then when I looked down at my hands, I realised they were covered in hair – Savile’s. I’d torn huge clumps out of his scalp." Adrian Street on WHY He Beat the SH*T Out of Jimmy Savile! (Disgraced TV Presenter) www.youtube.com Another reason why Street was so famous was a photograph that was taken of him by Dennis Hutchinson for the Sunday People newspaper in 1973. The photo shows Street in his full glam rock wrestling gear, complete with long hair, make-up and colourful outfit standing next to a group of miners in a coal mine in his hometown. According to Street, this was a revenge picture. "I want to show them what I’ve made of my life, what I’ve become since leaving Wales," the icon told Hutchinson. The Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller called the picture the most "important photograph taken in Britain after the war." Street's career has been cemented in several documentaries including a WWE film called Imagine What I Could Do to You which was released in 2019. Have your say in our news democracy. Three-year-old struck by stray bullet while jumping on couch as police swooped in to arrest neighbour
A three-year-old was struck by a stray bullet while jumping on a couch in New York on Monday night. Lovely Toney was at home in an apartment complex in the hamlet of Ridge, Long Island, when police arrived looking for murder suspect Gary Jones. Detectives were in the building to interview Jones’s friend, who is a resident in the same complex, and soon found that the suspect was there at that moment too. They subsequently instructed everyone to leave the apartment, before Jones came out of another room and began shooting. Of the multiple shots fired, three rounds went through the wall into the apartment next door and a bullet struck Lovely, causing her to bleed heavily. Describing the harrowing scene to CBS, Lovely’s father James Toney said: “No three-year-old, any child, should experience anything inside their home. She was fresh out of the tub, dripping wet from getting out of the bath.” “She just jumped on the couch, and she must have had her hand up, because the shot went through the hand, through the stomach,” he added, explaining: “I turned around and my daughter was standing there with blood running.” Lovely was rushed to hospital and underwent life-saving surgery. At a press conference Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison released bodycam footage of the incident and praised the “heroism” of apartment residents and the “quick action” of police officers and detectives at the scene, without whom the incident could have resulted in “horrific tragedy.” Mr Harrison explained that the “timely manoeuvre of getting that three-year-old child into a vehicle, rushing to a hospital” were what saved Lovely’s life. Referring to the family’s trauma, he said: “I have a grandson who is three years old. I can’t imagine going through that same situation.” “But I will say thank God for the men and women of this department,” Mr Harrison finished. Jones was found dead in the neighbouring apartment later, as a result of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The murder suspect was wanted by police for allegedly killing his girlfriend in Central Islip in June. SEC announces settlement with merger partner of Trump’s Truth Social app
SEC announces settlement with merger partner of Trump’s Truth Social app
The Securities and Exchange Commission announced that it had settled fraud charges with the financial firm tied to former president Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform, Street Insider reported. The SEC had accused Digital World Acquisition Corporation (DWAC), a special purpose acquisition company, of making material misrepresentations in forms it filed with the SEC as part of its initial public offering and its proposed merger with Trump Media & Technology Group Corp (TMTG), which Mr Trump founded. DWAC had misled both the SEC and investors when it failed to disclose that it had formulated a plan to acquire and was pursuing the acquisition of TMTG. Special purpose acquisition companies are meant to identify and acquire operating businesses. But the SEC said in the forms DWAC filed to support its IPO in September 2021, neither it nor its officers had said it had discussions with any target companies before its IPO. But the SEC’s order found that the person who would become DWAC’s chief executive and board chairman, along with other people, had extensive special purpose acquisition company meetings with Mr Trump’s company, and that the executive had pursued talks with TMTG for another special purpose acquisition company he created. In turn, the SEC called DWAC’s Form S-1 false and misleading. “DWAC failed to disclose its discussions with TMTG and failed to disclose a material conflict of interest of its CEO and Chairman,” Gurbir S Grewal, the director of the SEC’s enforcement division. “In the context of a SPAC – a ‘blank-check’ entity without business operations – these disclosure failures are particularly problematic because investors focus on factors such as the SPAC’s management team and potential merger targets when making financial decisions.” The SEC said that DWAC violated antifraud provisons of security laws. It had previously announced that it would pay an $18m settlement in the event it closes a merger transaction and it would sign a cease and desist order. Last month, federal authorities arrested Michael Shvartsman, Gerald Shvartsman and Bruce Garelick and the three were named in an unsealed federal indictment. The all pleaded not guilty to insider dealing at a court in New York City this month. Read More Truth Social’s merger partner reaches $18m settlement with SEC
