Gareth Southgate is set to name his England squad as his side prepare to conclude their Euro 2024 qualifying efforts. England take on Malta and North Macedonia in their final two Group C fixtures. Southgate’s team are yet to lose in their qualifying campaign and secured their place at next summer’s tournament with a 3-1 win against Italy in October. The manager has stressed, though, that he his intent on victory in these final two games to secure as high a seeding as possible ahead of the Euros draw at the start of December. When are England’s matches? Ollie Watkins was recalled to Southgate’s squad for the last set of international fixtures, and will hope for inclusion again having scored against Australia. Raheem Sterling has now missed out on four successive selections to illustrate the competition for places in forward areas, while there will be focus again on Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson given their club situations. Manager Southgate has backed both, though, and two trusted individuals could well make the cut. A man has been nicknamed the "Hardest Geezer” after he embarked on a mission to run the entire length of the continent of Africa for charity. Who is the the Hardest Geezer? Russell Cook, from Worthing in West Sussex, is no stranger to some physically brutal challenges that have earned him the label. In 2022, he was the first person to run from Asia to London and now, the 26-year-old has taken it to another level, aiming to become the first person to run the length of the African continent. Now, 24 days into his journey, he has covered several hundred kilometres and even been stalked by wild cats and thieves in the process. His route began in South Africa and will see him travel north up the west coast of Africa through Namibia, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Algeria before finally ending his mammoth run in Tunisia. Cook is completing the run to raise money for two charities – The Running Charity and WaterAid. At the time of writing, he has raised £13,300 of his £100,000 target. He is documenting his journey on social media, regularly updating his Twitter, Instagram and YouTube channels on his progress. In one video, Cook revealed he was “absolutely bouncing” and was looking forward to reaching a petrol garage 6km down the road where he was told they sold Cornish pasties. In a Q&A with Twitter users, he gave his advice on how others can motivate themselves. Ever wondered how optical illusions actually work? Wonder no more. A new study by University of Exeter visual ecologist Jolyon Troscianko, and neuroscientist Daniel Osorio from the University of Sussex in the UK has weighed in on the debate over whether we perceive things weirdly because of certain errors in the ways our brain processes colour, shade, and shape or because of our eye's function or the brain's neurological wiring. They reckon it is all in the eyes. The pair found ways our visual neurons – cells that process information coming in from the eyes – work, showing how they can affect our perception of patterns on different scales. "Our eyes send messages to the brain by making neurons fire faster or slower," said Troscianko. "However, there's a limit to how quickly they can fire, and previous research hasn't considered how the limit might affect the ways we see colour." "Our model shows how neurons with such limited contrast bandwidth can combine their signals to allow us to see these enormous contrasts, but the information is compressed – resulting in visual illusions," said Troscianko.
