Early stages of life at Spurs ‘nothing like my honeymoon’ says Ange Postecoglou
Ange Postecoglou has laughed off talk he is in the honeymoon period at Tottenham but promised they will continue to improve. Spurs’ flying start to the new campaign earned their new head coach the Premier League manager of the month award for August on Friday. The last Tottenham manager to receive the accolade was Nuno Espirito Santo at the start of the 2021-22 season but he was sacked months later in October. When it was put to Postecoglou that he was still enjoying the honeymoon phase of life in north London, he was happy to point out some of the challenges he has faced in N17. “I don’t know what your honeymoon was like, but mine didn’t have me losing the greatest player (Harry Kane) in the history of this football club on the eve of a transfer window, me trying to scramble to get players into the club, fighting for everything I do mate. That’s not what my honeymoon was about,” Postecoglou reflected. “I don’t sit here and think this has come to me or been served on a platter. I’ve worked hard, mate, I’ve worked really hard. It’s been a really tough period, nothing like my honeymoon. “At Celtic I lost three of our first six. At Yokohama, we were battling relegation, but I can tell you the same sort of building stuff I did at the those clubs, I’m doing here. “The only difference is the results have been better, encouraging, for sure, but I love this period because there is pretty much a day-to-day uncertainty about where we’re at. That will be here for the next six months to a year. I don’t know what your honeymoon was like, but mine didn’t have me losing the greatest player (Harry Kane) in the history of this football club on the eve of a transfer window, me trying to scramble to get players into the club, fighting for everything I do mate. That’s not what my honeymoon was about Ange Postecoglou “Everywhere I’ve been, the second year is where I’ve felt like the team has really taken hold, but I also understand at this football club I can’t go three, four, five months without results because I won’t last. That’s the reality of it. “If you measure on outcomes, yes, this looks like this has been smoother than the others. “But I can assure you this has been just as challenging, if not more challenging because of the stakes here in the Premier League.” Postecoglou admitted it would take two more transfer windows for him to feel his playing group has the squad depth it needs, with Spurs only required to challenge in the Premier League until January. He added: “I definitely think we need at least two more windows to get to a space where I think ‘okay, we (are happy) as a squad.’ “Don’t forget this year we’re out of the Carabao Cup now and we’ve got no European football, so the fixtures are a little bit kinder to us between now and Christmas, but that’s not our aim. “We want to have games, we want to be in Europe, we want to be in cup competitions. So we’re going to need a stronger squad and I don’t think we’re anywhere near that point where we’ve got a robust enough squad at the moment.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Erik ten Hag unsure whether Jadon Sancho will play for Manchester United again Steve Borthwick says Lewis Ludlam is ‘the right person to start’ against Japan Dawid Malan’s happy to be left holding the baby after shining in England victory

‘Trump is a witness against himself,’ E Jean Carroll lawyer argues in civil rape trial closing arguments
In her closing arguments on behalf of writer E Jean Carroll, lawyer Roberta Kaplan told the jury: “You saw for yourself. E Jean Carroll wasn’t hiding anything.” Ms Kaplan called Ms Carroll’s testimony “credible,” “consistent,” and “powerful,” according to Law & Crime. During his video deposition in October last year, Mr Trump mixed up Ms Carroll and his then-wife Marla Maples. Ms Kaplan said, “Mr Trump pointed to Ms Carroll, the woman he supposedly said was not his type”. “He only corrected himself when his own lawyer” corrected him, she added. Mr Trump “did [what] he always does” when caught, Ms Kaplan said. “He made up an excuse,” claiming that it was “blurry,” the lawyer added. Referencing the Access Hollywood tape, Ms Kaplan said, “He grabbed her, using his words, ‘by the p****.’” “He didn’t even bother to show up in person,” Ms Kaplan said about Mr Trump choosing not to attend the trial. “In a very real sense, Trump is a witness against himself,” the attorney said about Mr Trump’s video deposition. She said Mr Trump “knows what he did. He knows he sexually assaulted E Jean Carroll”. Ms Kaplan laid out a timeline of the alleged attack during her closing argument, saying that it happened while Ms Carroll was hosting Ask E Jean on America’s Talking between 1994 and 1996. America’s Talking was run by Roger Ailes, who later served as the CEO and chairman of Fox News before he was ousted following a series of sexual misconduct allegations against him. Ms Kaplan noted that at the time of the alleged rape by Mr Trump, Ms Carroll was wearing a wool dress with tights, but she wasn’t wearing a coat, indicating what kind of weather there was on that day, according to Law & Crime. Ms Carroll said that it must have taken place after her friend Lisa Birnbach had published her story on Mar-a-Lago, published in February of 1996. The writer said she thinks it happened on a Thursday as the department store was open late. “She was trying to come to grips with the fact that she was being attacked,” Ms Kaplan said during her closing argument on Monday. The lawyer noted that her client remembers the attack in “great detail”. Ms Kaplan spoke to the jury about why they showed Mr Ailes’s interview with Donald Trump from the 1990s. She said that Mr Ailes’s talk show on the shortlived cable news network America’s Talking was recorded in the same building, and broadcast on the same network, as Ms Carroll’s programme on the channel – Ask E Jean. Ms Kaplan noted that Mr Trump would have seen the end of Ms Carroll’s programme if he watched his appearance on Mr Ailes’s show unless he changed the channel the exact right moment. The attorney for Ms Carroll noted that a former executive at the Berghof Goodman said that there weren’t many people in the lingerie department on Thursday nights, particularly in the early spring. Regarding Ms Carroll telling Mr Trump to tell on the lingerie, Ms Kaplan said, “I think we understand what was happening. This was a combination of humour and flirting,” according to Law & Crime. “It was a joke. Ms Carroll could see the joke in her mind’s eye,” Ms Kaplan added. “The point was that it was funny.” Speaking about what Mr Trump is alleged to have done to the writer, Ms Kaplan said, “He grabbed her by the p****, or vagina — I’m sorry for my language”. Three meat-free dishes to try this National Vegetarian Week
National Vegetarian week (15-21 May) is the perfect excuse to give these stunning meat-free dishes a whirl. Full of texture, flavour and colour, you won’t feel like you’re missing out. Mediterranean vegetable and goat’s cheese galette Makes: 1 x 10 inch pie Ingredients: 300g plain flour 150g salted butter, cubed 3 tbsp cold water 1 packet of prepared Mediterranean vegetables (400g) or a mix of fresh – chopped into chunks 150g soft goat’s cheese, cut into slices 1 egg Salt and pepper Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 200C (fan). 2. In a large mixing bowl, rub the flour and butter with your fingers until a crumb consistency is achieved. Add the water and stir together to form a pastry dough. 3. Tip the dough out onto the lined baking tray and roll out into a large oval/circle shape (2-3mm thickness). 4. Arrange a layer of goat’s cheese slices in the centre of the pastry, top with the vegetables and then fold in the edges to encase everything. Place a few additional goat’s cheese slices on top of the vegetables. 5. Beat the egg and use a pastry brush or your finger to egg wash the folded pastry edges before seasoning the whole galette with salt and pepper. 6. Bake for 30 minutes until the pastry is golden, allow to cool slightly and serve. Red pesto and parmesan dough knots Makes: 8 knots Ingredients: 1 packet fast action dried yeast (7g) 220ml warm water 400g strong white bread flour 1 tbsp white sugar 1 tsp salt ½ jar red pesto 170g cheese of choice, we recommend parmesan Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180C (fan). 2. In the measuring jug, combine the warm water and yeast. Stir and set to one side for 2-3 minutes to activate the yeast. 3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar and salt. Pour in the yeast and water and stir them together with your hand to form a dough. 4. Sprinkle your worktop with a little flour and knead the dough until smooth, then return to the large mixing bowl, cover and leave in a warm place for at least 15 minutes to prove (this is where it will start to grow in size). 5. Using your fist, knock the dough back (this means push the dough back down to its original size) and tip out onto a floured worksurface before rolling into a large rectangle shape (about 5mm thickness). 6. Spread the red pesto on half of the rectangle, grate a thin layer of cheese on top and then fold the over half of the dough over the pesto and parmesan. 7. Cut the dough into 1 inch wide strips, then, holding each end, twist and knot each one before placing onto a lined baking tray. 8. Bake for 15-20 mins until risen and evenly browned then remove from the oven, allow to cool slightly, grate more cheese on top and serve. Savoury crêpes Makes: 6 crêpes Prep time: 5 mins | Cook time: 30 minutes Ingredients: 2 large eggs 200ml milk 120g plain flour Butter for greasing pan For the fillings: Grated cheese and mushrooms (sliced and pan fried in butter – but these can be made with any filling of your choice!) Method: 1. In the large mixing bowl, combine the eggs, milk and flour with the whisk to form a runny batter. 2. Place your pan over medium heat and grease lightly with butter before spooning in about 2-3 tbsp of batter and swilling it around to form a thin, even crêpe. 3. Return the pan to the heat and leave to cook for 30 seconds, then using the spatula, or flipping if you feel confident to, flip the crêpe over and cook the other side for a further 30 seconds. 4. Place the crêpe on a plate and repeat steps 2 and 3 until all of the batter has been used, stacking them up as you go. 5. To fill, take one of the crêpes, place it back in the pan and sprinkle with grated cheese and mushrooms. Leave for 30 seconds, then fold the crêpe in half and then half again to create a quarter fold. Flip the whole thing over to brown the other side lightly and ensure all the cheese has melted, then serve. Recipes from the Easy Peasy Baking campaign.
