China has been spying from Cuba since at least 2019, White House says
China has been using Cuba as a spy base since at least 2019, the White House confirmed on Saturday. It was reported last week that Cuba and China had reached an agreement in principle to build a spy base on the island. The Wall Street Journal, quoting senior US officials familiar with the matter, reported that China planned on paying Cuba billions of dollars in exchange. Initially, the White House said that the report was inaccurate. However, on Saturday, it said: “This is an ongoing issue and not a new development.” It claimed though that “the arrangement as characterised in the reporting does not comport with our understanding.” The statement said that Joe Biden upon joining office in January 2021 was briefed on China’s efforts to expand its global military and intelligence presence. “The PRC [People’s Republic of China] conducted an upgrade of its intelligence collection facilities in Cuba in 2019. This is well-documented in the intelligence record.” It said the Chinese government “will keep trying to enhance its presence in Cuba, and we will keep working to disrupt it”. The statement added: “We think the PRC isn’t quite where they had hoped to be.” It also claimed that the US has taken diplomatic and other steps to “slow down” the Chinese government in Cuba. The WSJ had earlier reported that an electronic eavesdropping station on the island would allow Beijing to gather electronic communications from the southeastern United States, home to many US military bases, as well as monitor ship traffic. China, meanwhile, accused the US of “spreading rumours and slander” and called the US “the most powerful hacker empire in the world”. “As we all know, spreading rumours and slander is a common tactic of the United States,” Wang Wenbin, spokesperson at the Chinese foreign ministry said. “The United States is also the most powerful hacker empire in the world, and also veritably a major monitoring nation.” Read More Honduras opens embassy in China after breaking off ties with Taiwan Ex-governor general examining allegations of Chinese meddling in Canada steps down China calls US the ‘most powerful hacker empire’ as it denies deal to set up Cuba spy station

Inter vs AC Milan line-ups: Team news ahead of Champions League semi-final as Rafael Leao to return
Simone Inzaghi’s Inter are 90 minutes away from the Champions League final after securing a 2-0 advantage against AC Milan. Early goals from Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan leave Inter strongly placed to set up a meeting with either Manchester City or Real Madrid. Milan were short of threat in the first leg, but should be boosted for this encounter by the return of Rafael Leao. The forward has been passed fit to play after recovering from injury and may be required to play a key role if his side are to overturn the deficit. Here’s everything you need to know. When is Inter vs AC Milan? The second leg of the semi final is due to kick off at 8pm BST on Tuesday 16 May at their shared San Siro ground in Milan. How can I watch it? Viewers in the United Kingdom can watch the game live on BT Sport 1 with coverage from 7pm BST. Subscribers can stream the action via the BT Sport app or online player. Team news Inter were able to rest a number of their first choice side in the win over Sassuolo, with Lautaro Martinez, Hakan Calhanoglu and Alessandro Bastoni in line to return to Simone Inzaghi’s starting lineup. The manager is expected to name a lineup identical to the one that secured a 2-0 first leg lead. Stefano Pioli should be boosted by the availability of Rafael Leao after the forward missed last week’s game due to a thigh injury. Junior Messias and Rade Krunic could also be fit to contend for selection. Predicted line-ups Inter XI: Onana; Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Dzeko, Martínez. Milan XI: Maignan; Calabria, Tomori, Kjær, Theo Hernández; Tonali, Krunić; Saelemaekers, Brahim Diaz, Leao; Giroud. Odds Inter win 19/17 Draw 5/2 Milan win 41/14 Prediction A draw is enough to ensure Inter’s progression through to the final. Inter 1-1 Milan (3-1 agg.) Read More False 9? Jordan Henderson ready for challenge of expected Liverpool midfield overhaul
Jordan Henderson ready for challenge of expected Liverpool midfield overhaul
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is ready for the challenge a midfield overhaul will bring next season and is confident he and the team can rediscover the consistency which will allow them to close the gap to Manchester City. Midfield is the key area which needs a refresh this summer and, with the club confirming on Wednesday the departures of veteran James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – in addition to forward Roberto Firmino – there will be some new faces for the next campaign. Henderson will be 33 by then and entering his 13th season at the club but is relishing the competition which he may face, with Liverpool interested in Brighton’s Argentinian World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister as one of their options. “I don’t think it’s a rebuild to be honest. I do think there will be new players coming in. A rebuild is changing an entire team – which I don’t think we will be doing,” Henderson, speaking at NHS Charities Together event at a school in Crewe, told the PA news agency. “I think you have a lot of core players in the team that will still be there and are still in great shape to compete and be successful. “But yes, it will need freshening up of course with players leaving and trying to improve the team. “I am sure players will be coming in at some point to give us a boost and freshen things up a bit and hopefully put us in good position come the first game of the season.” On what that means for him personally he added: “It’s always a challenge, especially at Liverpool, there will always be challenges for places and to play games. “That’s the case ever since I came to the club. Come pre-season I’ll be ready for the challenge again. “Motivation never changes really, it is always about improving and being better, individually and as a team. “Always new challenges come along, different things will happen and you will have new challenges throughout the season. I am sure players will be coming in at some point to give us a boost and freshen things up a bit Jordan Henderson on potential summer signings “There is always a challenge in football to improve, to be better and that motivation always stayed the same to be successful. “I’m confident we can reach the levels we are capable of again, definitely. We have shown that over the past six or seven games and it’s about continuing on that path from now until the end of the season and (next season) pick up where we left off hopefully.” Henderson is an ambassador for NHS Charities Together and was at Springfield School in Crewe, which caters for four to 19-year-olds with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties, after they won a prize draw having been involved in the annual NHS Big Tea fundraiser, which this year takes place on the health service’s 75th anniversary on July 5. The England international, who spearheaded the PlayersTogether initiative which encouraged professional footballers to donate to the NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic, has an affinity with the NHS after his father Brian was treated for mouth and throat cancer. “My dad probably wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for the NHS staff, he’d say that himself,” added Henderson. “I’ve got family members who work within the NHS and know how difficult it’s been, especially over the last few years with the pandemic. “I’ve been doing work at different hospitals up and down the country as well and it’s been amazing to see the behind-the-scenes stuff and get to see some of the staff.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Football rumours: PSG weighing up new bid for Man City midfielder Bernardo Silva On this day 2016 – Liverpool lose to Sevilla in Europa League final Man City crush holders to book Champions League final return
