What is Bell’s palsy? The neurological disorder Tiffany Chen was diagnosed with after giving birth
Robert De Niro’s girlfriend Tiffany Chen told Gayle King in an interview on CBS Mornings that she was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy after giving birth to their daughter Gia Virginia. Bell’s palsy is a neurological disorder which temporarily paralyses one side of the face and causes it to appear droopy and lopsided. According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition “causes sudden weakness in the muscles on one side of the face. In most cases, the weakness is temporary and significantly improves over weeks.” However, it’s not uncommon to experience paralysis on both sides of the face as Chen did. Also known as “acute peripheral facial palsy,” the disorder is an inflammation of the nerve which controls the facial muscles and could potentially be the result of a prior viral infection. While there is no confirmed cause of the neurological condition, The Facial Paralysis Institute has linked many cases to women post-pregnancy. The typical time frame for women to develop symptoms after giving birth is seven to 10 days (about one and a half weeks), according to the institute. Symptoms are likely to worsen within 48 hours (about two days) of when they initially appear and begin to ease up in the following weeks. A full recovery typically won’t take place until six months after. The 45-year-old actress noticed her speech was slurred and she was unable to eat in the week after delivery. “Women who experience Bell’s palsy symptoms after childbirth should pursue treatment immediately. Bell’s palsy that goes undiagnosed or untreated can lead to permanent facial paralysis,” the institute asserted. If the neurological disorder develops during pregnancy, the chance of complete recovery is lower. Per The Facial Paralysis Institute report: “The prognosis for complete recovery isn’t as great as the general population, 52 per cent vs 80 per cent, respectively. It should be noted that the poorer outcomes reported are likely related to the past reluctance of physicians to prescribe steroids and antivirals in treatment.” After eight months of experiencing symptoms, the individual is encouraged to seek long-term treatment, but in general, pregnant women are encouraged to be treated with steroids as any other person experiencing the disorder would. “Botox, neuromuscular retraining, and selective neurolysis” are all “novel treatments” for the permanent condition, according to the institute. “Botox injections can provide safe, reliable, and painless treatment of permanent Bell’s palsy post-pregnancy. When administered to the normal side of the face, the nonsurgical injections relax the overactive muscles, restoring facial symmetry and improving facial appearance,” the institute reported. Neuromuscular retraining is often administered after the individual has also received Botox injections. As for selective neurolysis, “the surgery provides reanimation of the smile that is lost with persistent Bell’s palsy. The procedure involves intricate mapping of the facial nerves to weaken those nerves counterproductive to the smile mechanism.” Read More Robert De Niro’s girlfriend Tiffany Chen reveals she lost ‘all facial functions’ after giving birth ‘It’s like having your legs broken’: The truth about flying as a disabled traveller Vaping is on every corner – so why do we still not know if it’s safe? Best in the world? The world is talking about Jude Bellingham after England masterclass
Best in the world? The world is talking about Jude Bellingham after England masterclass
In the celebratory aftermath of England’s qualification for Euro 2024, Jude Bellingham was in little mood to qualify his opinion. The Real Madrid midfielder just went out and said how Gareth Southgate’s side deserved the win over Italy because they were the “much better” team. There was no diplomacy there, just a striking stridency. It created a very different mood to the last time a match between the two teams led to a tournament qualification, amid scenes that received a new prominence recently due to the David Beckham documentary. That was the 1997 0-0 draw in Rome, which saw England qualify automatically for the 1998 World Cup. The suffocating tension of that match bore so little resemblance to the stroll of Tuesday’s game, at least for Gareth Southgate’s side. Then, Christian Vieri’s late header caused audible gasps within the Stadio Olimpico, no doubt to match those around the country. The ball went just wide, though, to bring huge emotional release and Paul Gascoigne dancing. The sense of achievement was profound. It was admittedly a different football and a very different Italy, with some of the intensity influenced by England’s failure to reach USA 94, but it was still just qualification - and that for a newly expanded 32-team event. It was also a hugely talented squad, filled by some of the most relentless winners the English game has known in so many of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United stars. And yet this England now has something more, as well as much more than just the expectation of qualification. It is more than the experience of reaching the latter stages of tournaments and so many other psychological milestones like beating Italy away. It is that assuredness, personified by Bellingham. There is something genuinely different in the midfielder, a potential missing ingredient for a team that last came within a penalty shoot-out of victory in this very competition. It is personality as much as performance. It points to an England that can be defined by “winners” at international level, that is able to rise to any given day because they are completely devoid of all the old baggage. This is something that Bellingham’s very youth represents, as well as his admirable willingness to just go straight to Real Madrid rather than feel he has to go to the Premier League. It’s similarly difficult not to think that the mood that fosters also fortifies the confidence of other players with England. That was maybe most visible in Marcus Rashford’s finish, as well as a level of display we haven’t seen so much with his club of late. None of this is to say it’s all down to Bellingham, of course. It’s rather what his mindset represents and rounds off. “He has been a catalyst,” Southgate said after the 3-1 win. “The way he carries himself and plays on the field and shows that, and he has had that since he walked through the door. Plus the power in his play, that gives us something when you are in tight situations and he can suddenly wriggle out of things… That belief, that willingness to engage with the crowd, they are rare traits in a player so young.” They are especially rare in historic England squads, right up to the recent successes. Southgate has navigated his sides through all that from fine man-management of a brilliant generation, where the Football Association have essentially become the latest wealthy western European football nation to industrialise talent production. Bellingham is the sort of player that eventually comes out of that, a final product if you like, but one that often requires a lot of patience. Putting all the pieces in place just gives you the best chance, rather than giving you a certainty of having the best player. These are of course the terms that are already framing the discussion around Bellingham. That isn’t English media exaggeration, either. It was the first question put to Southgate by Italian media. It dominated the late-night football discussion in Spain. The world is talking about Bellingham. It might yet see England dominate these Euros, in the same way they did to Italy to get there. Sleeping on yellow stained pillows leaves the internet divided
Sleeping on yellow stained pillows leaves the internet divided
We all have our comforts to get the best sleep possible, but it turns out a yellow-stained pillow is a staple for a lot of men and it's sparked a debate online. A photo of a yellow-stained pillow from Getty Images went viral went it was posted to Twitter/X by user Cam Thomson (@largemotorcycle). "Gf is mad at me because I have revealed to her The Yellow Pillow. Fellas, i’m sure you all know that this thing is magic," he wrote in the caption. He added in a follow-up tweet: "It’s not my fault the pillow is yellow and bestows upon me the most peaceful slumber." “To me, it’s my most comfortable pillow and a sign of a well-loved item,” Thomson told NBC News, but it has since been "tucked away in storage," as his girlfriend wanted him to throw it away. The tweet quickly began to do numbers, receiving 4.5m views, and over 63,000 likes and prompting a discussion where it there was an apparent gender divide as men were particularly attached to their yellow pillows from their childhood which apparently "give[s] you the best sleep of your life." "Part of being a man is using the same pillow since the age of 10 and never washing it," one person wrote. While another person said: "My life has been a downward spiral since I threw away mine when I was like 23." "I got rid of my yellow pillows maybe a year ago and I legit haven't rested comfortably since," someone else added. A fourth person commented: "Women will never understand the male attachment to their yellow pillow." While the women aren't exactly fans of the yellow pillows and make it known in the discourse. One person wrote: "If you go to his house and see these leave." "Yuck. This is just like my husband’s pillow. He calls it “seasoning," another person said. Someone else added: "Why do all men have a yellow pillow. WASH IT" As this debate roars on, the real question is... why do pillows turn yellow in the first place? It's all to do with the accumulation of moisture such as sweat, drool, wet hair, and even skincare products, according to Sleep Foundation. But a yellow pillow could also hinder your sleep due to the presence of allergens where things such as dust mites, and mildew build up in the pillow and cause allergic reactions. Your skin may also break out when using a yellow pillow due to the bacterial buildup on the surface you rest your head on each night. It is recommended that pillows should be replaced in one to two years or sooner if they begin to discolour.
