Wild Alabama riverboat brawl prompts folding chair and 'Black Aquaman' memes after footage goes viral
At least four people have been arrested after footage of a wild brawl in Montgomery, Alabama, went viral across social media. "There’s a possibility more will follow after the review of additional video," the police told The Independent. The incident occurred on August 5 near Montgomery Riverfront Park and was captured by several witnesses before being broken up by Alabama police. The alleged turn of events saw two men having an argument with a Black dock worker. Things soon escalated before many more people jumped in to seemingly defend the man. In one piece of footage, one woman claimed: "These white people jumped this black security guard at the Riverfront. The staff got off the boat and it turned into WWE Smackdown. I’m so proud of Montgomery." Another person shared a different angle of the brawl, writing: "I HATE when people jump people a majority of the time, & even more so when you want to fight or jump someone for doing their job. I applaud EVERYONE that helped that man out." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter People were thrown into the water and folded chairs were smashed over people's heads. The footage prompted X users (formerly known as Twitter) to do what they do best: Memeify it, with the 'inventor' of the folding chair being the centre of memes across the net. In 1911, Nathaniel Alexander patented a design of the chair for schools, churches and "in small towns when somebody tries you," one person jokingly quipped. As the jokes rolled in, many users highlighted that the image "of Alexander" was in fact Lewis H Latimer, who invented many things including the light bulb filament. Warning: Some readers might find the below images distressing. There were more than a few wrestling memes too given that folding chairs are a very common weapon in sports entertainment. The internet couldn't get enough of the man who swam from the boat to help, dubbing him 'Black Aquaman.' Trust us, the internet is obsessed with this brawl. There have even been recreations. And a song too. The Montgomery Police Department have since revealed in a statement that several people have been detained with charges pending. Officials "acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job," Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed said in a statement. "Warrants have been signed and justice will be served." Reed continued: "This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred. As our police department investigates these intolerable actions, we should not become desensitized to violence of any kind in our community. Those who choose violent actions will be held accountable by our criminal justice system." Have your say in our news democracy. Newcastle fan admits he turned his Christmas tree lights off after VAR controversy
A Newcastle United fan isn't exactly feeling the Christmas spirit after a controversial VAR decision was awarded to Paris Saint Germain which resulted in a draw. The Champions League match took place at Parc des Princes last night (November 29) where The Magpies got ahead of the French giants thanks to a goal from Alexander Isak in the 24th minute. But drama unfolded at the end of the game when a spot-kick was awarded to PSG for handball - however, the ball initially hit Tino Livramento's chest and then deflected onto his arm. Despite a VAR review from referee Szymon Marciniak who looked at the footage on the pitch side monitor, the penalty was given and Kylian Mbappe provided the late equaliser in the 98th minute. Manager Eddie Howe expressed in a post-match interview that he believes the penalty "wasn't the right decision" "There are so many things to take into account at that moment, the speed first. It was a ricochet that when it is slowed down, looks completely different to the live event," he said." The ball hits his chest first, comes up and hits his hand. But his hand is not in an unnatural position, they [his hands] are down by his side, but he is in a running motion. "I feel it is a poor decision and it's hugely frustrating for us as you know how little time there is left in the game. There is nothing we can do about it now." Newcastle fans were understandably upset at how the game panned out due to the decision, and one supporter named Kyle in particular expressed just how down in the dumps he was feeling when he called into talkSPORT. "No I'm not alright, I'm pure depressed," Kyle said. "...you know it cheers us up a little bit knowing everyone's on the same page, everyone with half a brain cell realises that was not the right decision, we really should have won that." "I had to turn my Christmas light off man," Kyle admitted to which radio host Jason Cundy asked: "What do you mean turn your lights off?" "I wasn't in the mood anymore," he replied, while co-host Jamie O'Hara added: "He wasn't feeling cheery!" The draw means that Newcastle are currently third with five points in Group F, two points behind Paris Saint Germain in second, with Dortmund in first with 10 points. Dillon Danis ‘shares secret Nina Agdal picture with Adin Ross' as misogynist trolling continues
The misogynist trolling of Nina Agdal by Dillon Danis is continuing in the run up to his fight with Logan Paul. Danis and Paul are going head to head in Manchester in October, which will be on the same card as KSI vs Tommy Fury. The pair have clashed repeatedly on Twitter, with Danis making claims about Paul and Agdal’s private life. Now, Danis has claimed that he possesses a picture which is capable of disrupting the pair’s relationship – and he supposedly shared it with Twitch streamer Adin Ross as part of a recent video. The clip, which was shared by the Happy Punch page on Twitter/X, saw Danis claiming to show Ross a picture. Ross appeared to be shocked in the clip, saying: "Bro, what the heck, bro? Now, that is beyond wild, bro. I actually feel really bad." It’s just one example of the misogynist trolling aimed at Agdal. Over recent times, Agdal has been trending on social media due to an explicit video that people have claimed features her. However, it has been reported that the video in question does not feature Agdal. Drama Alert posted a picture of Agdal and Paul on Twitter, adding the caption: “Leaked explicit video of Logan Paul’s fiancé is NOT real, DramaAlert has confirmed. The video is not of Nina Agdal, but of a different girl.” Agdal and Paul have yet to release any comment on the situation. Danis has claimed the pair have had arguments over the MMA fighter’s recent tweets. He wrote last month: “Told Logan to his face he’s marrying a sl** and he didn’t do sh** about it.” He added: “Had his whole team and me in there alone, shows you the kind of man he is.” Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. West Brom partner with The Jeff Astle Foundation charity for coming season
West Brom have announced The Jeff Astle Foundation as their official charity partner for the 2023-24 season. The Jeff Astle Foundation was launched to serve as a lasting legacy for former Baggies forward Astle, who died in 2002 aged 59 with early-onset dementia and had his verdict of death later recorded as being by industrial disease, owing to the repeated heading of a ball. Set up by Astle’s family, The Jeff Astle Foundation continues to campaign for greater research into the impact of repetitive heading for footballers, raising awareness of brain injury in all forms of sport and offering much-needed support to those affected. Astle scored 174 goals in 361 appearances for West Brom and netted the winner in their FA Cup triumph over Everton in 1968. A donation will be made to The Jeff Astle Foundation for every home shirt sold. Albion managing director Mark Miles said: “We are delighted to be supporting The Jeff Astle Foundation for the coming season. “The profile of the charity and its achievements to date are a direct consequence of one family’s dedicated quest to ensure the safety of everyone who plays the beautiful game. “We wholeheartedly support the charity’s aim to raise awareness of brain injury in all forms of sport, including football, and hope the partnership helps further build the profile of their incredible work.” Charity director Dawn Astle said: “We are honoured and overwhelmed to be named the club’s official charity partner for the 2023-24 season. “Dad loved this club and its supporters and to have next season’s home kit dedicated to him and the charity instils our family with a pride that is difficult to comprehend. “We are so, so thankful to the club for providing us with this opportunity to continue to celebrate dad’s legacy, raising awareness and funds for the charity in the process. “As a family we have been fortunate enough to have been involved in the kit’s design and we are confident the club’s supporters will love it as much as we do. “It’s a special kit for a really important cause, and every shirt sold will help us to continue our work with those affected by brain injuries in sport.”
