Russia-Ukraine war – live: Putin launches waves of drone strikes on Kyiv for second night
Vladimir Putin’s forces have unleashed “waves” of drone strikes on Ukraine’s capital city for a second consecutive night, Kyiv’s military has said. Russia’s intensified attacks on Kyiv came after weeks of pause, as fighting continues to rage at hotspots along the vast frontline, with both sides hoping to make tactical gains before winter sets in. After securing multiple footholds on the eastern bank, Ukrainian troops have worked to push back Russian forces at the Dnipro River, with their military claiming to have repelled 12 attacks over the weekend. Mr Putin has lost around a brigade’s worth of forces there in a month, claims Kyiv. Meanwhile, Russia is suffering “particularly heavy losses” on the Donetsk frontline as it seeks to capture the tactically key Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, with cluster munitions hampering both sides’ ability to advance, the UK’s Ministry of Defence said on Saturday. But neither side has achieved substantial progress in any fighting hotspot, and “there are few immediate prospects of major changes in the frontline” as colder winter weather sets in earnest in eastern Ukraine, the ministry said. Francis Ngannou to earn more in Tyson Fury fight than entire UFC career, says rep
Francis Ngannou will make more money in his fight with Tyson Fury than in his entire UFC career, according to the Cameroonian’s longtime representative. Ngannou, 36, will box WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, 34, in Saudi Arabia on 28 October, marking the “Predator”’s first fight since January 2022. In that bout, Ngannou beat Ciryl Gane to retain the UFC heavyweight title, which he won in 2021 and vacated this January upon leaving the promotion. Ngannou has since signed with the Professional Fighters League (PFL) – a rival to the UFC – which has granted him the chance to box before he makes his debut with the company in 2024. And per Marquel Martin, Ngannou’s longtime rep, Ngannou will earn more from boxing Fury than he did in his 14 UFC fights combined. Responding to past claims that Ngannou ‘fumbled the bag’ by leaving the UFC, Martin told The MMA Hour on Wednesday (12 July), “Let’s just say this: The bag is so big, he may actually just drop it on the way to the bank. “I don’t know what the haters are trying to say right now, I kind of just blocked it out, but they’ll just be proven wrong again. This is life-changing. This is exactly what we planned and visualised, so we’re happy.” When asked if Ngannou would earn more in the Fury fight than in all of his UFC bouts combined, Martin said: “Oh, my God. I mean, by far – by multiples. Just to make [this money] even while being champion, he would’ve had to fight multiple times, just to [be in this ballpark].” As it stands, Fury’s WBC title will not be on the line in Riyadh, where he fights Ngannou, and it is unclear whether the bout will count towards the Briton’s professional record. However, Martin and Frank Warren – who promotes Fury – have insisted that the contest is not an exhibition fight. “This is an actual fight,” Martin said. “What happens with the WBC belt, we plan on talking with the WBC to get licensed. That’s our plan, and we never know, we may have the opportunity to maybe put his [belt] on the line. I don’t know, that’s for his side. “But I know that, from our side, we plan on hopefully having those conversations and making sure that we do everything in our power to. We want this to go on on [Fury’s professional] record. But again, I’ll set the record straight: This is a real fight.” Click here to subscribe to The Independent’s Sport YouTube channel for all the latest sports videos. F1 fans spark chaos with brawl at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
A group of F1 fans were embroiled in a fight at a trackside party following the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday. Footage emerged online on Sunday night of a group of fans at an after-party, with Red Bull branding, brawling at the Yas Marina Circuit opposite the marina between turns 11 and 12. A video shared on X, formerly Twitter, shows a man in a white t-shirt repeatedly punching and throwing items at a man in a blue and white jacket. Security stepped in, as other fans ran away from the scene and jumped over furniture as the fight ceased. It is unclear what provoked the brawl, which took place with “All of the Lights” by Kanye West blaring through the speakers. F1 and the Yas Marina Circuit have been approached for comment. Footage of the fight has more than one million views. It is not the first time this season that F1 fans have fought in the stands. A supporter was banned for life from Formula 1 races after attacking two Ferrari fans at the Mexico City Grand Prix last month. The scrap in the stands followed Sergio Perez having to retire from his home race in front of a gutted Mexican crowd. The Red Bull driver collided with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on lap one of the race, spinning off track and sustaining irreparable damage to the floor of his car. Later, footage emerged online of fighting in the Foro Sol Stadium grandstand, with one spectator throwing punches at two fans dressed in red, the colours of Ferrari. The spectator was then put into a chokehold by another fan, before being ejected from the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit by security. Max Verstappen won Sunday’s season-finale in Abu Dhabi for a record-extending 19th win of the season.
