Oppenheimer has sparked controversy in India over a sex scene – here's why
Oppenheimer has sparked controversy in India over a sex scene – here's why
One of the most famous lines in Oppenheimer is when J. Robert Oppenheimer, the protagonist, thinks of the Hindu holy book Bhagavad Gita when the first bomb is detonated during tests. Oppenheimer’s line “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds,” is, apparently, true to real life. It also appeared in the Bhagavad Gita when the god Vishnu is trying to persuade Prince Arjuna that he should do his duty and to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says the same words. Now, it turns out some members of the Hindu community in India are upset about how this quote is first brought into the movie – when he is having sex with Florence Pugh’s character, Jean Tatlock. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter While in bed, she gets up and goes to his bookshelf, taking a book written in a language she doesn’t know. Presumably, we can interpret this to be the Bhagavad Gita. Then, she asks him to read it while they continue having sex, feeding the scientist’s ego and further inflating the god complex he has over his own intelligence. Perhaps unsurprisingly, some on social media aren’t too happy about their holy book being read during a sex scene. Uday Mahurkar, an Indian journalist and founder of the Save Culture Save India Foundation, called it a “direct assault on religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus” in an open letter addressed to Nolan. The post argues that Hollywood is deliberately “very sensitive” about Islam and asks why “the same courtesy” can’t be shown to Hindus. It adds that if Nolan does not remove the scene from the film, it will be interpreted as a “deliberate assault on Indian civilization”. News outlet Variety reports that Oppenheimer got a “U/A Certificate” from India’s board of film certification, which is roughly equivalent to a 12A rating in the UK. The publication also reports that Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut originally contained a song on the soundtrack with a line from the Bhagavad Gita during an orgy scene. Warner Bros. later removed the scene and issued a public apology. Have your say in our news democracy. Chelsea offers free travel to fans for Premier League match on Christmas Eve
Chelsea fans travelling to Wolves for the Premier League clash on Christmas Eve will be offered free transport to and from the game by the club. The match itself was originally scheduled for 23 December but has been moved back a day for a 1 pm kick off, becoming the first Premier League to take place on 24 December since 1995. It is a decision that has been unpopular with fans, given the already congested festive fixture schedule. "The club is aware that transport options are more limited than usual on this date, as it is a Sunday and also Christmas Eve," Chelsea said in a statement. "As a sign of appreciation for fans making this trip, Chelsea Football Club will be offering free travel as a goodwill gesture to anyone who purchases a ticket." The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust said: “It is totally unacceptable that Wolves v Chelsea has been scheduled for Christmas Eve. “Not only could this lead to staffing issues at Molineux, but holiday transport timetables will further inconvenience supporters.” Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino will also be unable to celebrate his wedding anniversary as well as the holiday. The manager said last week: "It is difficult because it is not easy to change," he said last week. "We need to accept we are in England and it is different to the rest of the world ... "Even if I am not happy, we need to try to be in our best level and accept a situation we cannot change." In August Chelsea were criticised for putting financial strain on fans after removing a £10 subsidy on coach travel to domestic away matches, deciding it was not ‘financially sustainable’. The club has spent almost £1bn on signings since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the club in 2022. With reporting from Reuters. Woman hit with 'creepy' proposal while trying to sell her engagement ring online
A woman trying to sell her engagement ring online was hit with a creepy proposal from a stranger. Nowadays, online dating is a common way to meet prospective partners, but when unsolicited messages start appearing in your social media inbox, it’s not always welcome. One woman was surprised when she found that selling an engagement ring on Facebook Marketplace resulted in several unwanted, creepy messages from men trying to hit on her. In a viral TikTok, Camille Fahrnbaue opened up about the incident, jokingly telling women via the caption, “Ladies, delete Hinge and download Facebook Marketplace”. She revealed over the course of the post that her husband had left her and so she was selling the ring on Facebook Marketplace. It seems the men used the fact she was selling an engagement ring as a sign she might be open to being approached, as Fahrnbaue posted several screenshots of some of the messages she received. One man responded to the ad: “Tbh I really don’t want the ring I’d rather just use the ring to re-marry you.” Another asked: “I’m not looking for a ring yet. Would it be too bold of me to take my shot?” “I don’t want to buy the ring but how about I take you country dancing and we can talk about what you’re going through,” another man messaged. In the comments, some found the content of the messages hilarious and rooted for Fahrnbaue saying it was “your husband's loss”. In a follow-up video, she shared that she managed to sell the ring and used the funds to fly back to the place in Italy where she and her ex eloped, in order to “make better memories”.
