Hank Green flooded with messages as he confirms he is in ‘complete remission’ from cancer
Popular content creator Hank Green – one half of the iconic YouTube duo ‘Vlogbrothers’ with sibling and author John Green – has revealed he is in “complete remission” from cancer following chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The SciShow presenter shared his diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma – a cancer affecting the lymphatic system, which includes the lymph nodes – in a video from May and said he was “not fine and it sucks”, but stressed the lymphoma is “super treatable”. Now, in an update posted to Twitter/X on Monday, Green confirmed he had a follow-up with his oncologist following his treatment which led to him being told he is “officially in complete remission”. He added: “Chance of relapse is low, but still very present. I have a scan in three months to make sure everything’s still good. “Then we keep a close eye on it for two years and then a medium eye on it for the rest of my life. They don’t call it ‘cure’ until five years from today. “And then there’s dealing with post-treatment health, which is certainly not perfect. You don’t get out unscathed! “Still working through some pain, some fatigue, migraines… anxiety, of course. But honestly… holy s***, y’all. Feels good.” And Green was immediately met with countless messages celebrating the “awesome” news: In follow-up tweets, Green said he is “utterly grateful” to “all of the people who have been part of the scientific and medical processes that made this possible” and that he is “so sad that these treatments … remain unavailable to so many people”. He continued: “I wish I could get behind the ‘I beat cancer’ frame. I did things, other people did things, and I mostly just got lucky (aside from the getting cancer part). “But most importantly, it’s more like ‘risk of relapse fades over the next few years, but you never know!” Green regularly updated fans during his treatment, taking a particular interest in the fact that “folks on chemo p*** out cancer”. Dillon Danis calls Logan Paul a 'pu**y' and tells him to meet him anywhere for a fight
Dillon Danis calls Logan Paul a 'pu**y' and tells him to meet him anywhere for a fight
Mixed martial artist Dillon Danis has challenged Logan Paul to meet him ‘anywhere in London’, after a dramatic press conference to promote their fight in Manchester in October ended without a face-off between the two fighters. Danis and Paul will enter the ring for a fight during the same event which sees musician and YouTuber KSI take on boxer Tommy Fury. However, when the pair were unable to finish the conference with a classic face-to-face, Danis tweeted: “I wanted a face-off with Logan Paul. He called it off in fear of his life and got me escorted out. “Meet anywhere in London p****.” Paul, meanwhile, put out his own tweet claiming Danis “threw a tantrum and left the arena before our face off”, attaching a photo of him confronting Mike Perry – “a real fighter who will actually show up” - instead. The comment is a reference to Danis previously being booked to fight KSI earlier this year, before pulling out. And things were already tense in the build-up to the press conference, as Paul took to Instagram Live to claim Danis “lodged himself in his [hotel] room” and is “not showing up” for their filmed face-to-face, before Danis finally arrived 40 minutes late. And Danis couldn’t help but clap back on Twitter in relation to the delay, joking he “had a surprise in the hotel room for my birthday”, sharing yet another picture of Paul’s fiancée Nina Agdal. During the press conference itself, Danis walked on-stage with the same Toy Story alien hat worn by Paul in his infamous 2017 video from Japan’s Aokigahara forest in which he filmed a person who had died by suicide, and then launched Prime bottles into the audience. Paul, meanwhile, had his own surprise props, beginning with a poster appearing to show Danis in an altercation together with text saying “real fighter”, and ending with a birthday cake depicting a bloodied Danis knocked out on the floor. The conference was brought to a sudden halt, however, when Fury’s father John Fury punched a table before flipping them all over. As the chaos ensued, Paul got the head of Danis from his cake and lobbed it at his opponent. While the event resumed for a face-off between KSI and Fury, which saw the former push the latter, no face-off took place between Danis and Paul. The boxing match involving all four fighters takes place in Manchester on 14 October. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. AI is using vast amounts of water
AI is using vast amounts of water
Artificial intelligence is using gallons upon gallons of water. Microsoft alone used more than 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water in its data centres last year. The latest numbers are leading to yet more questions about the sustainability and environmental dangers of the growth of artificial intelligence and related technology. Artificial intelligence requires vast computing resources, undertaking deeply complex calculations on behalf of people around the world. AI systems tend to be run in the cloud rather than on individual people’s computers, meaning that companies running them must operate vast server farms to deal with the queries of their users. Those server farms in turn need to pump in water to cool themselves down, because of the heat generated by those computers. That has long been a concern for environmentalists, but the sharp growth in artificial intelligence has led to even more use. Microsoft’s water consumption rose 34 per cent between 2021 and 2022, according to its latest environmental report, highlighted by the Associated Press. It was up to almost 1.7 billion gallons. Not all of that is from artificial intelligence. But Shaolei Ren, a researcher at the University of California, Riverside working to better understand the environmental impact of AI told the AP that the “majority of the growth” is because of the technology. Google also said that its water use had increased by 20 per cent over the same period. That varied across its different data centres, which are based in different parts of the US. For each 5 to 50 prompts, or questions, put to ChatGPT, it uses 500 millilitres of water, according to a paper that will be published by Professor Ren and his team later this year. Many technology companies have expressed concerns about their own water use, and how to minimise any negative effects of their data centres. The environmental concerns can be especially pressing because the use of water can be focused in particular areas around a data centre, meaning that the damage may not be spread. Google said last year for instance that “Wherever we use water, we are committed to doing so responsibly”. That includes analysing where water is being used and how much stress it might put on the surrounding area, for instance.
