Proof that Twitter's new logo is impossible to differentiate between porn sites
Proof that Twitter's new logo is impossible to differentiate between porn sites
Elon Musk’s decision to change the Twitter logo to an X has been mocked for looking like a porn site, with pictures to prove it. Since his takeover of the social media platform Twitter, Musk has made multiple significant changes that have left users baffled. Some changes affect the way users are able to interact with others, based on their verified (i.e. paid for) status, while other changes are more superficial. The latest idea has seen Musk change the iconic blue bird logo of 15 years, replacing it with a white X on a black background that many have compared with porn sites. Porn sites such as XVideos and XNXX feature logos that are variations of the letter X and comedian Jesse McLaren pointed out how true the comparisons are after sharing a screenshot of a Google Chrome page with six tabs all bearing logos that are very similar. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter McLaren wrote: “These are all porn except one. That one's Twitter.” The tweet has been viewed over 4 million times and sparked a conversation about the design of the logo. Someone commented: “It’s the fact that if I had to guess which one out of these was a porn site, my immediate first guess would be the Twitter one.” Another said: “I have a feeling that this will become an interesting case study in marketing and branding classes.” “Unethical, degrading, and perverted. Also there are some porn sites there I guess,” one Twitter user joked. Someone else argued: “Twitter is a porn site too.” Industry experts have cast doubt over Musk’s rebrand decision, particularly at a time when other competitors such as Meta’s Threads have entered the market. Mike Proulx, research director at the analysis firm Forrester, told the Guardian: “By changing Twitter’s app name, Elon Musk will have singlehandedly wiped out over 15 years of a brand name that has secured its place in our cultural lexicon.” He continued: “This is an extremely risky move, because with ‘X’, Musk is essentially starting over while its competition is afoot.” Have your say in our news democracy. Trump businesses earned $1m from Pentagon while he was in office
Newly released documents have revealed that Donald Trump’s businesses charged the Pentagon almost $1m during the first three years of his presidency. As per the documents obtained by ethics watchdog American Oversight, and verified by Forbes, Trump’s businesses charged his Department of Defense $976k from 2016 to 2019. The number is reportedly way larger than previous public information of about $300k, which was reported by CNN in 2019. “As far as we can tell, this is the first time these specific expenses have been reported– and they are long overdue,” Heather Sawyer, American Oversight’s executive director told Forbes. “While we expect to receive receipts of government spending at Trump properties for years to come, we urge the government to pick up the pace so that the American people have this information as they consider Trump’s re-election efforts.” As per the documents, the defence department spent money across 15 different Trump properties with the former president’s Miami resort being the biggest beneficiary, followed by his golf club in New Jersey. Both properties collected $274k and $266k respectively. Mr Trump’s Scottish resorts also collected approximately $181k. Mr Sawyer pointed out that “Trump’s refusal to divest from his businesses created an environment rife with the potential for abuse”. He added: “During his administration, Trump’s properties became vessels for self-enrichment. “Donald Trump is now running for president again. His ‘old’ habit of enriching himself at taxpayer expense deserves renewed scrutiny as he seeks another term.” In other news, Mr Trump is set to make his first public appearances since his federal indictment, speaking on 10 June to Republican audiences in Georgia and North Carolina as he seeks to rally supporters to his defence. The former president is going to reportedly deliver a full-throated rebuke of the charges and amplify his assertions that he is the victim of a politically motivated “witch hunt” by Joe Biden’s Justice Department. Twiglet the dachshund returned home after armed dognapping in Essex
Sausage dog Twiglet is safe and reunited with her owners, after a video of her being stolen from a family home in Essex was widely shared. Twiglet, a dachshund, was snatched by a thief who smashed a patio door. Police later released footage of the dog struggling to get away from the thief, who is thought to have sold her on. Jo Vindis, Twiglet’s owner, said she was “elated” that Twiglet was home on Thursday. “Without the video we probably would never have seen her again”. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter “Well, we do love our dogs, don’t we? I think it just resonated with everyone with a dog, or even without, just how someone from your family – just snatched out of your home – it’s just horrible.” The break-in happened at Vindis’ house in Catmere End in Essex. “Our neighbours were round the house within a few minutes of the alarm going off, but he'd already taken her at that point,” said Vindis. “It looks as though that’s what he was after. Nothing else was taken.” Posting on a lost dogs group on Facebook, the owners said: “We can’t thank everyone enough for all of the posts and reposts and noise that has meant that she most likely did become ‘too hot to handle’. “We are blown away by how amazing people have been and want to thank you all so, so much.” The 16-month-old pooch was returned to her family after “a tip-off that came thanks to all of the coverage”. “Someone contacted us and said they thought the dog they had bought was Twiglet, and that's sort of as much as we know, but the investigations are ongoing so we're hopeful that the person who took her will be caught,” Vindis said. Fortunately, the dog is back to being her normal self. Vindis added: “She doesn’t seem too traumatised by it all.” Essex Police said inquiries remained ongoing, with no arrests having been made.
