Sheffield Wednesday appoint former Watford boss Xisco Munoz as their new manager
Sheffield Wednesday have appointed former Watford boss Xisco Munoz as their new manager. The 42-year-old Spaniard replaces Darren Moore, who surprisingly departed the Owls having guided the club to promotion via the League One play-offs. Munoz steered Watford back into the Premier League having taken charge midway through the 2020-21 campaign, but was sacked during November 2021 after just 36 games in charge. Former winger Munoz won both the LaLiga title and the UEFA Cup while at Valencia, before moving into management with Georgian club Dinamo Tbilisi and moved to Watford in December 2020. A short statement on the Owls’ club website read: “Sheffield Wednesday are delighted to announce the appointment of Xisco Munoz as our first team manager. “The Spaniard, who gained promotion to the Premier League with Watford in 2020/21, takes charge of the Owls with immediate effect.” Munoz will give his first press conference as the club’s new manager at Hillsborough on Wednesday afternoon.

New Jersey Governor keen to host Premier League and Champions League matches
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy would love to bring competitive Premier League and Champions League matches to the state. Football is thriving in North America right now, with Lionel Messi joining Major League Soccer side Inter Miami three years out from the USA, Mexico and Canada hosting the World Cup. The so-called ’39th’ Premier League game has been discussed before and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin recently hinted that a Champions League final could one day be played in the US. “I know that the clubs have not been wild about that in Europe but I’d love to think that it would happen,” Murphy said. “You would have Barcelona playing Real Madrid in New Jersey at some point in a regular season or in a Champions League game. I would love that. “I would just appeal either to the Champions League, if that’s UEFA, and play a game here. “I can say unequivocally, we would die to have a real competitive game anywhere in America. If it was in New York-New Jersey, you wouldn’t get near that game. “It would be overwhelming. To have a Champions League game, you wouldn’t be able to get near it.” I can say unequivocally, we would die to have a real competitive game anywhere in America Phil Murphy Murphy was speaking in a media briefing on Saturday before cavernous MetLife Stadium recorded its highest ever attendance for a club football match. There were 82,262 in attendance for Manchester United’s 2-0 friendly win over Arsenal at a stadium that Murphy believes should host the 2026 World Cup final. New York-New Jersey is also among the host cities and Murphy believes the showpiece should come to East Rutherford. “We’re fighting like heck to get the final, which is to be determined,” Murphy said. “I think LA and Dallas’ names come up from time to time. I think Miami comes up. “Messi may be single-handedly recalculating the odds for Miami but we think when you add everything up we have got the winning package, but we’ll see. We’re not taking anything for granted. “When people think of America, I think New York and Los Angeles are the two communities that rise above everyone else. “I think the logic tells me you go to one of those two cities and with all due respect to them, we think we play a stronger hand. “We think for time zone and stadium size we’re bigger. I assume the decision gets made at the highest levels. They love what they see here.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live Review process will lead to a better Cricket Scotland – Pete Fitzboydon Ben Earl commends England coach Steve Borthwick’s tactful approach with squad Ponting discusses uncanny resemblance with Harman – Tuesday’s sporting social

Rubik's cube world record smashed by man in mind boggling time
The world record for the fastest time to complete a Rubik’s cube has been absolutely smashed and there is footage of the incredible feat. 21-year-old Max Park from California shattered the long-standing existing record, shaving an incredible 0.34 seconds off the old time. In front of a crowd, Park solved the Rubik’s cube in a mind-boggling 3.13 seconds, making him the fastest speedcuber in the world. The crowd observing the feat went absolutely wild when the timer stopped and the internet was sent into a similar frenzy after viewing the clip. Park shared the clip on Twitter, captioning it: “Rubik's Cube 3x3 World Record (3.13) breaking 4.5 year old record of (3.47).” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It has been viewed over a million times, with people in awe of his skill and accomplishment. One viewer wrote: “This is the best thing I’ve seen all week. The look on his face when he sees the solve, the referee protecting the cube and the kid’s reactions all = chef’s kiss.” Another said: “Most exhilarating 3.134 sec of my day.” “I love the purity of everyone else’s reactions. It’s a competition but they’re still thrilled for the guy,” someone else said. The sheer skill and knowledge of his craft had some questioning their own abilities, as someone suggested: “I couldn't solve a Rubik’s in 3.13 hours.” According to the Guinness World Records, Park was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. The Korean-American’s passion for speedcubing was supported by his parents from a young age and his unique ability is certainly paying off. His parents said: “Cubing has proved to be a good therapy for Max to socialize and strengthen his skills.” Have your say in our news democracy. Max Verstappen breaks unique 40-year F1 streak after title win in Qatar
Max Verstappen has become just the fifth driver in Formula 1 history to clinch the world title on a Saturday – and the first in 40 years. The Dutchman, who has won every grand prix bar three this season, sealed his third straight world title after Sergio Perez crashed in the sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix on Saturday, leaving his team-mate nable to catch him with six races and two sprints to go. Verstappen has been unstoppable throughout 2023 and, despite his dislike of the sprint race format, secured his 2023 crown in the 100km dash around the Lusail International Circuit on Saturday night. It marks the end of a streak dating back to 1983 of drivers clinching the world title on a Sunday, the traditional day of a grand prix race. The last title-clincher on a Saturday was Nelson Piquet in 1983, who won the championship at the season finale in South Africa – with the grand prix held at Kyalami on a Saturday. The two previous winners – Piquet in 1981 and Keke Rosberg in 1982 – also claimed the title on a Saturday, with both seasons concluding at the Caesars Palace Grand Prix in Las Vegas, held on a Saturday. Prior to that, British driver Graham Hill secured the 1962 world title at the South African Grand Prix in East London, again on a Saturday. And 1959 champion Jack Brabham sealed his moment of victory on a Saturday too, at the United States Grand Prix, then held in Sebring, Florida. Saturday night racing, as well as the six sprint races this season, is making a return for a full grand prix next month as Las Vegas hosts the highly-anticipated street race on the famous strip at 10pm local time on Saturday 18 November. The 2024 season will also start with two Saturday night races – in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia – due to Ramadan. Sunday is considered a “feast day” during the Islamic festival, which sees the world’s almost two-billion Muslims fast between sunrise and sunset during the other six days of the week.
