Billy Gilmour delighted to end challenging season on high with Scotland win
Billy Gilmour delighted to end challenging season on high with Scotland win
Billy Gilmour was delighted to end a challenging season on a high with an impressive display in Scotland’s 2-0 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Georgia. Gilmour won the official man-of-the-match award after making light of the sodden conditions with an excellent display of possession football. The midfielder was making his first competitive start for Scotland this season after forcing his way into the Brighton team in the final weeks of the campaign. Gilmour had been unfortunate to see the man who signed him from Chelsea, Graham Potter, leave for Stamford Bridge a week after the transfer. He took some time to get into Roberto De Zerbi’s team and also had to cope with being the victim of a stalking campaign last autumn by a woman who was sentenced in court to a suspended prison term on Tuesday. The 22-year-old started five of the last eight games of the Premier League season, which included a 6-0 win over Wolves, a draw with Manchester City and wins over Manchester United and Arsenal. And he was able to depart for his summer break in good spirits after helping Scotland maintain their 100 per cent record in Group A of the European Championship qualifiers. “I am really happy with my first start in a while,” the former Rangers youth player said. “I am just happy to be back out there playing, with a smile on my face, doing what I love. It’s a good feeling. “It’s been a challenging season. Towards the back end I got quite a few opportunities at Brighton, so I am thankful and happy. I have worked hard. It was a good way to end the season.” Scotland moved eight points clear at the halfway mark of their group, although Spain have two games in hand and are nine behind. Gilmour said: “We have shown a real togetherness. We are doing well as a team and the manager is making sure we are working hard and challenging each other every day in training. It’s really good for Scotland. Everyone is pushing each other.” Scotland overcame torrential conditions and a near two-hour delay to clear water off the pitch to beat Georgia through goals from Callum McGregor and Scott McTominay. “It was tough,” Gilmour said. “One minute the game was going ahead and the next it’s not. “It was a crazy night but mentally we had to be focused and ready and big thanks to the fans staying behind and the ball boys helping out, cleaning the pitch and making sure it was playable. “The first 10-15 minutes was crazy, just to adjust, you think you can win it and then it holds up. But we got it sorted. Everyone stuck together, helped out and we got three points.” Gilmour was focused on the game rather than being distracted by the prospect of finishing the match on Wednesday and delaying summer breaks. “I was too busy sitting down trying to keep myself ticking over,” he said. “There might have been a couple of shouts of ‘replay tomorrow’ but it was fine after we got the water off the pitch. “Football came first, obviously with the national team. We were all focused on that and leave summer until after the game. Now we can go and have a break and enjoy.”

Drake hits out at Dillon Danis over loss to Logan Paul after $850k bet
Drake hits out at Dillon Danis over loss to Logan Paul after $850k bet
Drake has hit out at Dillon Danis after the mixed martial artist, who lost his boxing match to Logan Paul over the weekend, called out the rapper for betting $850,000 on him to lose. After months of back-and-forth beef, Paul and Danis went head-to-head in the ring on Saturday. The YouTuber won by disqualification in the six-round clash due to Danis attempting to try an illegal move on Paul in the form of a guillotine choke. The hyped-up match even had Drake betting on what the result would be, and he put his a whopping bet on Paul to win by KO. The rapper's 'cursed' betting history had Paul's fans worried for a while, though. He previously bet on Paul's brother Jake last year to win in his fight against Tommy Fury, but for the first time in his boxing career he lost. But this time round, he chose the winning fighter. Meanwhile, Danis wasn't too happy when he found out Drake had bet against him as he took to Twitter to diss the God's Plan rapper as he wrote "850 on my head is disrespect," in reference to Drake's track 'I'm Upset'. With this, he also posted a screenshot of Drake's bet as well as a photo of himself with the rapper. Drake then responded to the tweet from Danis by uploading to his Instagram Story some sort of fan cam of Paul's WWE stunts and his recent win in the boxing ring, before panning the camera on himself and showing his £850,000 bet on Paul winning. (And of course, his song 'I'm Upset' was playing for the duration of the clip). Elsewhere, there is confusion around whether Paul's win by disqualification means that Drake lost his bet or whether the bookmakers Stake would honour the disqualification as a win. In Drake's Instagram Story, the image of his bet appeared to show that Stake classed the DQ as a technical knockout, meaning that Drake won his $1.3 million payout, while The Sun also reported that Drake won his bet too. Mary Earps hits out at Nike over continued refusal to sell England goalkeeper jerseys
Mary Earps hits out at Nike over continued refusal to sell England goalkeeper jerseys
Mary Earps has questioned Nike’s statement that defended the company’s decision not to sell replica England goalkeeper jerseys. The Manchester United keeper won the golden glove at the World Cup, where she saved a penalty in the Lionesses’ 1-0 defeat to Spain in Sunday’s final. Earps has become a firm fan favourite as interest in the women’s game has boomed – including the Euros success last summer. Nike came in for criticism before the tournament when it became apparent replica Earps shirts would not be available. In a statement released after the final, the kit manufacturer said: “Nike is committed to women’s football and we’re excited by the passion around this year’s tournament and the incredible win by the Lionesses to make it into the final. “We are proudly offering the best of Nike innovation and services to our federation partners and hundreds of athletes. We hear and understand the desire for a retail version of a goalkeeper jersey and we are working towards solutions for future tournaments, in partnership with Fifa and the federations. “The fact that there’s a conversation on this topic is testament to the continued passion and energy around the women’s game and we believe that’s encouraging.” On Tuesday afternoon, Earps posted a screenshot of the statement on her Instagram stories, adding the comment: “@Nike is this your version of an apology/taking accountability/a powerful statement of intent?” In a following post, Earps provided a link to a change.org petition that started in July, calling on Nike to release the goalkeeper shirt and it currently has more than 97,000 signatories.
