Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was outraged when VAR controversially ruled out Jarell Quansah’s late equaliser in the Reds’ dramatic 3-2 defeat to Toulouse, but Joe Cole insisted the “ref got it right” after disallowing the goal because of an earlier Alexis Mac Allister handball. Quansah was denied his first Liverpool goal after bundling in a 98th minute equaliser when Mac Allister was ruled to have used his arm to control the ball as the Reds pressed for a late draw in the Europa League clash. However, Liverpool and Klopp were livid as Mac Allister’s handball came several phases before Quansah thought he had levelled. The Argentine midfielder’s touch came roughly 10 seconds before the 20-year-old scrambled in the equaliser. Commentating on TNT Sports, former Liverpool winger Steve McManamann said a “million things” had happened before Quansah struck, while Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher tweeted: “The game has gone! Get rid of VAR, that’s a disgrace.” There was further confusion as the on-field referee Georgi Kabakov appeared to point to the centre-circle, awarding the goal, before he was sent to the pitchside monitor for an on-field review and then overturned his decision. Speaking on TNT Sports, former Chelsea and Liverpool winger Cole said: “I think it was a handball. It was a strange situation because we were all wondering what was going to be the decision given the handball happened quite a while before the goal went in, but the ref got it right. “Much to the dismay and frustration of Liverpool fans and players, it was the right call.” Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis agreed. She said: “A great finish by Quansah who thought he had equalised but I think it was rightly ruled out in the end. “He showed real determination to get his side back in the game, like I said a good finish from the defender, but it is a handball.” The Reds thrashed their French opponents 5-1 at Anfield two weeks ago, but the side who are 14th in Ligue 1 flipped the script as Liverpool suffered just their second defeat in all competitions this season. Before kick-off, Liverpool were boosted by the news that Luis Diaz’s father had been released by his kidnappers in Colombia, 13 days after he was seized by gunmen from the guerrilla group National Liberation Army. The Reds were fortunate to pull one back when home defender Cristian Casseres bundled into his own net, but Toulouse immediately restored their two-goal advantage as Frank Magri slammed in a rebound after some poor Liverpool defending. Candidates in the Republican Party primary field have given their initial reaction to the news that lead 2024 contender Donald Trump has been notified by the Department of Justice of his status as a target of the investigation into the January 6 Capitol riot. It is the first real confirmation that he could face criminal charges for his role in the 2021 siege of Capitol Hill. Mr Trump wrote in a lengthy statement delivered via his Truth Social platform that special counsel Jack Smith had notified him via letter on Sunday about the development; The Independent had previously reported that Mr Smith was preparing a superseding indictment for the former president related to the Jan 6 attack. Former UN Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley was interviewed on Fox News shortly after the news broke and used it as an opportunity to reiterate the need for a generational change in the party to move on from the distractions of the Trump era. “The rest of this primary election is going to be in reference to Trump, is going to be about lawsuits, is going to be about legal fees, it’s going to be about judges and it’s going to continue to be a further and further distraction,” she said. “And that is why I am running. It’s because we need a new generational leader. We can’t keep dealing with this drama. We can’t keep dealing with the negativity.” Among the first to react was former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson who reiterated his call for Mr Trump to suspend his 2024 campaign. Nearly seven months on from Adidas parting ways with rapper Kanye West, and the sportswear brand reportedly still has $1.3 billion of unsold Yeezy stock in its warehouses. The decision from Adidas to split from West - otherwise known as Ye - came back in October last year came after the 45-year-old made antisemitic remarks both in interviews and online. But now, Adidas has to decide what to do with the remaining stock of the popular shoe as the company attempts to turn its fortune around after it abruptly ended its partnership with West and his Yeezy brand, with 400 million euros ($441 million) in lost sales at the start of the year. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Though Adidas is "getting closer and closer to making a decision" on what to do with the sneakers and the “options are narrowing,” new CEO Bjorn Gulden said, as per Associated Press. He became in charge back in January this year, three months after Adidas terminated it's partnership with Ye. However, a decision has not yet been reached due to "so many interested parties," he added. Gulden did not confirm whether the option to destroy the shoes had been ruled out but noted that this is something it is the company is "trying to avoid." Meanwhile other options have their own downsides, since selling the shoes would mean Ye would need to be paid royalties, removing brand identification would be dishonest. Giving the shoes away for free sounds like a nice idea in theory but this could cause them to be resold at a higher market price. Gulden is also remaining tight-lipped on the exact quantity of stock that is left since he believes if consumer are aware of this number it "could have an impact on demand," as per AP. The CEO admitted losing Yeezy is "of course hurting us" and if Adidas decides not to sell the remaining shoes, it could reduce earnings by 500 million euros this year. Net sales declined 1 per cent in the first quarter, to 5.27 billion euros, and would have risen per cent with the Yeezy line, the company said. As a whole, Gulden described 2023 as a "a year of transition" with "a better ’24 and a good ’25" as the German sportswear business continues without the Yeezy brand. Elsewhere, Adidas found itself being sued by investors last week who allege the company knew about Ye’s offensive remarks and harmful behaviour years before the termination and failed to take precautionary measures to limit financial losses.
