Scott McTominay stars again as Scotland close on Euro 2024 spot with Cyprus win
Scott McTominay continued his stunning Euro 2024 qualifying form as Scotland brushed aside Cyprus 3-0 to move within touching distance of Germany. The Manchester United midfielder opened the scoring in the sixth minute in the AEK Arena in Larnaca with his sixth goal in five games before Ryan Porteous volleyed in his first international goal nine minutes later. The three points were effectively secured in the 29th minute when McTominay set up John McGinn for a third and the Old Trafford man hit the woodwork late on as the visitors cruised to victory. Steve Clarke’s side have now won five out of five Group A qualifiers to sit nine points ahead of Spain having played two fixtures more. Scotland host England in a 150th anniversary heritage match on Tuesday night and if Norway and Georgia draw in their qualifier the same evening then the Scots will have reached their second successive European Championships. And if that scenario does not materialise then there are still games against Spain, Georgia and Norway to finish the job themselves. Scotland could hardly have been in better form going into the match in Larnaca, having gone eight competitive games unbeaten, including wins over Spain and Norway. And it seemed like a Scotland home game with more than the official 3,728 Tartan Army members inside the 8,056-capacity stadium. Temur Ketsbaia’s team had lost their opening three qualifiers, including a 3-0 defeat at Hampden Park in March and so confidence was rightly high in the visiting camp. Che Adams rather than Lyndon Dykes led the Scotland line, closely supported by McGinn and McTominay and they all combined for the opener. A quick Adams throw-in released skipper Andy Robertson down the left and when he stood his cross up, McGinn flicked on inside the six-yard box – it looked like he had miscued it – for McTominay to head in at the back post. Cyprus’s positive reaction saw striker Pieros Sotiriou hit the bar a minute later but the offside flag was up before attacking midfielder Grigoris Kastanos tested Scotland keeper Angus Gunn with a long-range drive. In the 13th minute Kastanos came close with another powerful drive from 25 yards before the Scots doubled their lead. Robertson’s deep free-kick in to the home penalty area was headed onwards by Jack Hendry and fellow centre-back Porteous took a touch before firing past Cyprus keeper Joel Mall. Just before the half-hour mark a fine Scotland move down the right ended with McTominay setting up the unmarked McGinn to curl in his 17th Scotland goal from the edge of the box. Scotland were playing with a swagger and McTominay drove just wide from 20 yards before McGinn shot from inside his own half. The tension had gone from the game but Kastanos again made Gunn react quickly to save another effort from distance. McTominay almost got a significant touch on a Robertson cross early in the second half as the game began to feel more like a friendly. Clarke made changes in the 66th minute with Kenny McLean and Dykes on for Billy Gilmour and Adams. Scotland bossed the final stages and in the 74th minute McTominay’s right-footed shot from the edge of the box beat Mall but rebounded off the post, before Stuart Armstrong, Nathan Patterson and Ryan Christie made cameo appearances. England are up next up and that is always a massive game for Scotland but the Tartan Army will have one eye on the result in Oslo on the same night to see if their appearance in the Euro finals in Germany are confirmed, although that may just be a matter of time. Influencer Morgan Osman becomes the new Tiffany Gomas with 'Instagram famous' plane rant
Influencer Morgan Osman becomes the new Tiffany Gomas with 'Instagram famous' plane rant
An influencer has been publicly shamed for boasting about her dubious celebrity status during a furious rant. Morgan Osman, 35, from Miami Florida, was filmed in the midst of a heated exchange with fellow passengers on board an American Airlines flight when she touted her “star” credentials. The video shows Osman pulling a suitcase from an overhead locker as she tells a man off-camera “Call me a b***h again.” “I did nothing wrong,” she then argues before telling the man and “[his] b***h” to “shut the f**k up”. Walking down the aisle, she spots the flyer who’s recording her and fumes sarcastically: “Film me, I’m Instagram famous, you f**king bum.” Her behaviour was met with mocking laughs from onlookers and ridicule on social media after the video was uploaded to Reddit and Twitter/X. Viewers were quick to point out that they’d never heard of the fashionista who has some 967,000 Insta followers. However, at the time of writing, her account on the platform was “no longer available”. “Lmfao at Instagram famous,” one Twitter/X user wrote. “I’m going to start telling people I’m Monopoly rich.” “What’s great about this new plane lady discourse is that she says ‘STFU, I’m Instagram famous” while in Economy,” another pointed out. “Instagram isn’t Real Life. Oops.” The 35-year-old is perhaps best known for appearing on season 5 of the US reality TV show The Bad Girls Club. But, according to one fan site, she was swiftly booted off early on in the series for breaking into the producer’s room. She also caused a stir for claiming to have secretly dated Britney Spears’s now-ex-husband Sam Asghari shortly after they began their relationship in 2017. Osman shared and quickly deleted a photo showing her locking lips with a man who resembled Asghari and said he was “using Britney”, the New York Post reports. It’s not clear what prompted her viral plane altercation but it’s not the first time an American Airlines passenger has made headlines for jaw-dropping behaviour. A woman who was later identified as Tiffany Gomas shot to internet notoriety for a bizarre outburst in which she uttered the now immortal words “that motherf**ker is not real.” The 38-year-old marketing executive subsequently addressed her actions in a video statement, admitting that they were “completely unacceptable”. However, she has also urged viewers to appreciate that “we all have our bad moments” and has since rebranded herself as a motivational mental health guru. We’re all now waiting to see how Osman will respond now that she really is Instagram – and internet famous. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Blade Runner director Ridley Scott believes we're ‘completely f**ked’ thanks to AI
Blade Runner director Ridley Scott believes we're ‘completely f**ked’ thanks to AI
There is much debate on how artificial intelligence will impact society in the years to come, though Blade Runner director Ridley Scott has a pretty bleak outlook, comparing it to a "hydrogen bomb." The 85-year-old didn't mince his words on the matter in an interview with Deadline where he expressed his thoughts on the continuous advancement of this new technology ahead of the release of his latest film Napoleon. "...the moment you create an AI that’s smarter than you are, you’ll never know until the AI decides to do its own thing, then you’re out of control," he explained. "If I had an AI box, I could say, 'I want you to figure out how to turn off all the electricity in London'. Bam. Everything was dead. "That's a f**king time … no, it's a hydrogen bomb," he said when asked if AI is something to be worried about. “The world would close down if I switch it off, and we are all completely f**ked." "We're back to candles and matches. "Do you have candles and matches at home? I live in France, so I do.” Meanwhile, Scott isn't the first legendary director to voice concerns about artificial intelligence, as James Cameron has also previously spoken out on this issue. “I think the weaponization of AI is the biggest danger,” he told CTV News back in July this year. “I think that we will get into the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don’t build it, the other guys are for sure going to build it, and so then it’ll escalate." The 69-year-old also referenced how he issued a warning about this through one of his previous films The Terminator which sees a cyborg assassin played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I warned you guys in 1984! And you didn’t listen," he added. How to join the indy100's free WhatsApp channel Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Johnny Depp and Jenna Ortega shut down 'ridiculous' 40-year-age-gap dating rumours
Johnny Depp and Jenna Ortega shut down 'ridiculous' 40-year-age-gap dating rumours
Dating rumours have been circulating about Johnny Depp and Jenna Ortega - and now the actors have responded by adamantly denying this. It all began when celebrity gossip account, Deuxmoi, said that the pair had been spotted on a date together, and also perhaps working together on Tim Burton's Beetlejuice 2. However, the 20-year-old Wednesday actor was quick to dispel these rumours connecting her to the 60-year-old Hollywood veteran in an Instagram Story. “This is so ridiculous I can’t even laugh," Ortega told her 40m followers. “I have never met or worked with Johnny Depp in my life. Please stop spreading lies and leave us alone.” Meanwhile, Depp's camp has also vehemently shut down these rumours too, describing how the Pirates of the Caribbean actor was "appalled" by them. His rep told NME: “Mr. Depp has no personal or professional relationship with Ms. Ortega whatsoever. He has never met her or spoken to her. “He is not involved in any project with her, nor does he intend to be. He is appalled by these baseless and malicious rumours that are intended to harm his reputation and career.” Beetlejuice 2 is set to see Ortega play the daughter of Lydia Deetz, the role famously played by Winona Ryder in the original 1988 film, while Ryder and Michael Keaton will also reprise their roles for the sequel. The film is expected to be released on September 6 2024. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy.
