The infamous 'Taured man from a parallel universe’ mystery explained
The infamous 'Taured man from a parallel universe’ mystery explained
Throughout history, there have been occasional little mysteries that have centered around supposed “time travellers” claiming to be from parallel dimensions. One occurred in Ukraine back in 2006, which saw a man claiming to be from years in the past turn up in Kyiv without much in the way of explanation. Another centres around the man who tried to pass himself off as being from the non-existent country of Taured and hailing ‘from a parallel universe’. There are various stories that centre on the man from Taured, with many claiming the urban legend to be fact. The story goes that back in July 1954 a Caucasian man with a beard arrived at Haneda Airport, also known as Tokyo International Airport. After security staff grew suspicious of his identity, the passport check showed that a country called “Taured” was listed as his nationality. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter “Taured”, of course, doesn’t exist. However, the man stated it had been a nation for more than 1,000 years and pointed at Andorra on the map, claiming it was located there. The Man From Taured www.youtube.com Amid the confusion, the man was taken to a hotel and put in a room. Two guards were placed outside the room until security staff were able to further investigate. Only, when the room was later opened, the man was missing. What was especially baffling was that the police established that he could not have escaped via his window as the room was too high up and there was no balcony. While many online believe the story to be gospel truth, the fact of the matter is that the truth behind the story is something much more mundane. As Snopes reports, the tale is a “greatly embellished and fantastical version of a far less sensational real story”. In reality, the site states that the story was likely inspired by the real figure of John Allen Kuchar Zegrus who presented a fake passport from the state of “Tuarid” and was swiftly arrested in Japan in 1959. While little detail is known about him, it’s thought that the man used the fake passport to travel through the Middle East before he was arrested and sentenced to a year in prison after cashing forged cheques in Japan. Mars is spinning faster and faster and scientists are baffled
Mars is spinning faster and faster and scientists are baffled
It’s been revealed that Mars is spinning at a faster and faster rate, effectively shortening the length of a day on the planet’s surface. Data collected by NASA’s Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) lander has left experts puzzled. The length of every day is shortening by a fraction of a millisecond each year, and experts don’t know exactly why it’s happening. The findings also showed that the planet is 'wobbling' in an unusual way due to the molten metal “sloshing” in its core. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The reason for the planet speeding up is unclear, but one theory states that ice building up at the poles could be behind it. Dr Bruce Banerdt of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California and his colleagues are behind a study into the findings, which were published in the journal Nature. Dr Banerdt said: “It’s really cool to be able to get this latest measurement — and so precisely. “I’ve been involved in efforts to get a geophysical station like INSight onto Mars for a long time.” He went on to say: “Results like this make all those decades of work well worth it.” Meanwhile, another new study has found that Mars may have once had wet and dry seasons – like those on Earth – conducive to the emergence of life. Researchers have discovered fossil evidence suggesting the red planet had a cyclical climate more than three billion years ago. Nasa also recently discovered “diverse organic matter” on the surface of Mars, which could change our understanding of the planet and the search for life in the universe. Darren England, referee of Tottenham-Liverpool VAR debacle, returns to the Premier League
VARs Darren England and Daniel Cook will return to Premier League duty this weekend following their error in last month’s fixture between Tottenham and Liverpool. England and Cook were the VAR and VAR assistant respectively when Liverpool forward Luis Diaz’s goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside in Tottenham’s 2-1 home win. Both officials were stood down the following week, but England will be back as the fourth official for Brentford’s home game against Burnley on Saturday and Cook will return as assistant referee for Sheffield United’s home match against Manchester United. Miscommunication between VAR England and referee Simon Hooper led to Diaz’s goal being wrongly ruled out on September 30, with the incident later described by referees’ chief Howard Webb as “a clear error”. Hooper is the designated VAR for Newcastle’s home game against Crystal Palace on Saturday. New VAR guidelines were introduced in the wake of the Diaz disallowed goal controversy, while audio of the incident was later released. England mistakenly thought the on-field officials had ruled Diaz to be onside, which meant that when he told them ‘check complete’ they believed he had upheld their on-field decision and restarted play with a free-kick. Once play had restarted, there was nothing the VARs could do to revisit the decision under existing protocols. Referees’ body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said it would develop a new VAR communication protocol in an effort to avoid similar mistakes being made in future. PGMOL said the protocol would “enhance the clarity of communication between the referee and the VAR team in relation to on-field decisions”. VARs will now also confirm the outcome of the checking process with the assistant VAR before confirming the final decision to the on-field officials. One of the talking points from the latest round of fixtures was referee Michael Oliver’s decision not to send off Manchester City’s Mateo Kovacic for a challenge on Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard. The City midfielder was shown a yellow card before avoiding another shortly afterwards and Webb later admitted Kovacic was “fortunate” to stay on the pitch. Oliver will referee Sheffield United’s home game against Manchester United on Saturday. Fashion icon Iris Apfel celebrates 102nd birthday in style: ‘As beautiful as ever’
Fashion icon Iris Apfel celebrates 102nd birthday in style: ‘As beautiful as ever’
Style icon Iris Apfel has celebrated turning 102 years old in true “Barbiecore” fashion. Apfel reached the milestone age on Wednesday 29 August. In honour of her birthday, the fashion designer shared a pink-filled photo of herself to Instagram, with Kool & The Gang’s "Celebration” playing in the background. “102 today… who would’ve thought!!” she captioned the post, which featured animated pink balloons flying over her head. In the image, Apfel posed in her eccentric New York City apartment, complete with a white porcelain dog statue and a gold accent table. She was dressed in head-to-toe pink, along with her signature oversized, black round eyeglasses. Apfel wore a large, baby pink cape à la fellow icon André Leon Talley, and layered, chunky necklaces and bangles. She finished the look with salmon-coloured trousers, floral socks, and hot pink ballet flats with a bow. In the comments, many fans and famous friends rushed to wish the 102-year-old interior designer a happy birthday. “HBD, Iris!!!” wrote none other than the official Instagram account for Barbie. “You make 102 look fabulous!” said one fan. Another follower commented: “As beautiful as ever!” “Forever an icon,” a third person said, while someone else wrote: “What an achievement!” On Tuesday, Apfel also celebrated her birthday with an intimate dinner at Tutto il Giorno in the Hamptons, New York, where she was joined by designer Donna Karan, model Christie Brinkley, and Brinkley’s daughter, Alexa Ray Joel. The model shared a series of photos and videos with the fashion legend to Instagram in honour of her birthday. “Happy Birthday to Iris! She’s 102 and she’s got more style than me and you!” Brinkley captioned her poem-like birthday tribute. “She’s the queen of fashion who gets better every year, and today’s her birthday, did you hear? She’s got her trademark glasses and a wardrobe of fun and we wish her every happiness under the sun. “She’s smart and savvy and extremely witty and she wants everyone to know that individuality is always pretty, that we should all be ourselves, one of a kind,” Brinkley wrote. “Good advice like that’s hard to find. So thank you Iris for all you do, to say to people, ‘You do you!’ (Like you do so well!). Happy Birthday Iris! We LOVE YOU!” Apfel was born in 1921 in Queens, New York, to a father whose family owned a glass and mirror business, and a mother who owned a fashion boutique. Along with her late husband, Carl Apfel, she launched the textile firm Old World Weavers in 1950, which ran until they retired in 1992. Throughout her career, she took on restoration projects in the White House for nine US presidents. In 2005, she showcased her large collection of clothing and accessories in an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, titled “Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel”. Her decades-long career in fashion and design became the subject of a 2015 documentary, simply called Iris. In 2019, she signed a modelling contract with global agency IMG at age 97. In an interview with Today following her 100th birthday, Apfel spoke candidly about her age and revealed why she’ll never retire. “Oh, I love to work. It’s fun because I enjoy it,” she said. “And then I can help people. I can give employment. People tell me I inspire them. So many good things come out of it.” “I think retiring at any age is a fate worse than death,” she continued. “Just because a number comes up doesn’t mean you have to stop.” Despite turning 100 at the time, Apfel explained that she didn’t see her age as a reason to “change” her lifestyle or career “overnight”. “I didn’t change overnight because the number changed,” she said. “I want to keep on working and doing different projects.” Instead, her motto at work is to “just do what [she]” feels and to do what she feels in her heart, rather than “verbalising” it. “I just feel it. If it feels right here,” she said, pointing at her heart.
