Astronauts capture the 'blood of Earth' in stunning photo
The Earth is home to truly stunning natural features, but sometimes you need a new perspective to appreciate it all over again. Thankfully, the experts at NASA are on hand to remind us just how incredible our planet is with the release of new photos showing the “blood of Earth”. The incredible images seem to show it bleeding, with dramatic red liquid appearing to cascade over the surface. However, it’s nothing at all to do with blood – which is probably just as well. Instead, the first picture shows the Laguna Colorada in the Bolivian Andes in South America from space. Remarkably, the image was taken by an astronaut onboard the International Space Station (ISS) using just a Nikon digital camera. The fact that it was taken more than 400 kilometres away from Earth on a handheld device is pretty staggering, and it offers a look at a natural phenomenon which we’d never otherwise get to see. The first picture shows the impact of red algae flourishing in the shallow water of the laguna, while the second shows the Betsiboka River Delta in Madagascar. This time, the red colour comes as a result of the iron-rich sediment. It’s pretty awe-inspiring stuff, and it’s not the first time that red “blood” has been seen running from our planet, either. Antarctica’s Blood Falls is a bizarre geographical feature in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of the continent, and it’s one of the strangest natural phenomena you're likely to see. It features a flow of water the colour of blood that can be seen seeping out from a glacier into the ocean. The mystery behind it has fascinated members of the scientific community for decades, but a solution has now been found. Scotland to open Euro 2024 with Germany clash
Scotland will kick off Euro 2024 after they were drawn to face tournament hosts Germany in Group A. Steve Clarke’s side, who sealed qualification for the finals with two matches to spare, will play in the opening match in Munich on June 14 before games against Switzerland and Hungary. Gareth Southgate’s England were drawn to face Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia in Group C. Wales still need to win two play-off matches in March if they are going to make it, but face a difficult assignment against 2022 World Cup finalists France, the Netherlands and Austria if they do. Scotland lost to Germany at the group stage of Euro 92, a 2-0 defeat preventing the Scots from progressing. Scotland also faced West Germany at the finals of the 1986 World Cup, where the Germans won 2-1 en route to the final. The Germans have won the three most recent encounters. Scotland have never faced Hungary in a competitive match but have won three of their previous nine encounters, while they beat the Swiss 1-0 in Euro 96 at Villa Park – the teams’ last competitive encounter. England’s opening match will be against Serbia, a team they have never faced at senior level before, in Gelsenkirchen. The team then move on to Frankfurt to take on Denmark, who they beat in the semi-final of Euro 2020. Their final group match will be against Slovenia in Cologne, a team England beat in their final group match at the 2010 World Cup. Joe Biden faces backlash after ‘sniffing’ child in 'odd' incident
President Joe Biden has received criticism for an interaction with a young girl at Helsinki Airport that some have branded as “odd”. The President was leaving Helsinki on Friday (14 July) but before boarding Air-Force One, he met with embassy staff and their families. A clip captured by Fox shows Biden interacting with a mother and her young daughter. The President is seen trying to mess around and make the young girl laugh by pretending to bite her and placing his mouth on her shoulder. Others say the President also sniffed the girls hair, whilst some claim he tried to kiss the girl’s cheek. The girl’s mother appears to find the funny side but the child attempts to wriggle away from the President whilst the mother takes a selfie with Biden. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Republicans were quick to capitalise on the video. Rep. Matt Gaetz called the interaction “quite strange”. Whilst Donald Trump Jr Tweeted: “Biden should be in a nursing home, not leading the free world.” This is not the first time Biden has been accused of sniffing someone’s hair. Earlier this month a digitally altered video of Biden seemingly sniffing a baby garnered a lot of attention, and it was quickly clarified. Twitter has since added a community note to that video adding context that states: “This is a doctored video of Biden visiting with a soldier’s wife and baby.” The note also contains a like to the original video on TikTok, where Biden simply makes some nosies in the babies ear before taking a selfie with the soldier’s family.
