5 times Mary Earps proved she was a national treasure
The Lionesses gave their all during the Women’s World Cup and none have made a bigger impression than Mary Earps. The goalkeeper bailed England out on plenty of occasions and brought fans some of the best moments of the tournament. Most of all, though, the Manchester United player powered the team through with sheer force of personality, playing a key part in England’s run to the final. The likes of Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo and Lauren James also impressed, but it was the keeper that gave us the something to cheer during the final despite the result. Earps won the 2023 Women’s World Cup golden glove – which is even more remarkable to think that she came close to quitting the sport entirely until coach Sarina Wiegman gave her a chance in the side before the Euros. These are five times she proved she was a national treasure. Her rant during the final Earps became an instant viral sensation after launching into a very sweary rant immediately after saving a penalty against Spain. It proved the standout moment for England during a disappointing 1-0 defeat. The shot-stopper saved a penalty from Spain's Jenni Hermoso in the final and reacted by shouting "f***ing yes, f*** off." It was the only real moment fans had to celebrate during the game. She’s a TikTok star @england The bona fide queen of TikTok: Mary Earps ? #england #Lionesses #FIFAWWC Fans have more insight into life in the England camp than ever before, and that’s partly due to Earps and her behind-the-scenes videos on TikTok. “I’m known as TikTok Queen,” she said recently, talking about entertaining her 868,000 followers. “I think TikTok just suits my personality and it gives people a real insight into who I am as a person, but also what the team’s like… you see a lot of training pictures and things like that - who we are as people and who were are as human beings. If I see anything that documents our journey then I might make a little video of it.” Dancing on the tables after the Euros 'It's coming home!' England players storm press conference chanting slogan | #WEURO2022 | Lionesses www.youtube.com The Lionesses raised the profile of the women’s game back in 2022 after winning the Euros, and the celebrations stretched out into the days after the game. One of the best moments saw the entire England team gatecrash coach Wiegman’s press conference, and who was the one to lead the chanting and dance on the table? Earps, of course. Getting a badger named after her You know you’re reaching national treasure status when things are named in your honour – and a baby beaver was named after the goalkeeper in honour of England reaching the World Cup final. The kit was born at the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate, near Exmoor, in Somerset, and joins siblings Russo, Toone and Rashford. Earps is the sixth member of the family born at an enclosure known as Paddocks, with twins – named Moss and Fern – born at a second enclosure nearby. Members of the public were invited to help name the three kits, with the final decision made by the ranger team on the estate. Earps is the younger sibling of Rashford, the first beaver born on Exmoor for 400 years, who was named after Manchester United player Marcus Rashford in 2021. He was followed by twins Russo and Toone, named after Lionesses Alessia Russo and Ella Toone, last summer. The kit debacle One of the biggest talking points before the tournament was Earps and her campaign to get the England goalkeeper shirt available for people to buy. Fans have been unable to purchase the shirt, with Nike deciding it wasn’t profitable to sell them. It led them to launch petitions with more than 65,000 signatures and even make their own shirts at home. Speaking earlier this summer about Nike’s decision not to sell the shirt, Earps said: “I can't really sugarcoat this any way so I'm not going to try, it's hugely disappointing and very hurtful. “It's something that I've been fighting behind closed doors. I've been desperately trying to find a solution with the FA and with Nike.” She added: “Unfortunately it's become very evident that is not possible and there's not going to be an acceptable solution for the young kids out there. On a personal level it's obviously hugely hurtful, considering the last 12 months especially. “For my own family, friends and loved ones not to be able to buy my shirt, they're just going to come out and wear normal clothes. All my team-mates, they've ordered a lot of shirts for their friends and family, they're talking at the dinner table 'I wasn't able to get this' and I'm saying 'I wasn't able to get it at all'. “I know there's a lot of people who have spent a tremendous amount of money on outfield shirts and then put '1 Earps' on the back, which doesn't sit well with me either. “It's a very scary message that's being sent to goalkeepers worldwide that 'you're not important'. A lesson I've learned is that I should have made a public statement sooner maybe. I look back on it and I've tried everything. I offered to fund it myself and my team-mates have been really supportive.” Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Manchester City not motivated by revenge against Real Madrid says Pep Guardiola
Pep Guardiola insisted revenge was not his motivation as he prepares Manchester City for their Champions League semi-final rematch with Real Madrid. City were beaten in heartbreaking fashion by the Spanish giants in the last four a year ago and have a chance to make amends this term. The first leg of their latest encounter takes place at the Bernabeu on Tuesday and Guardiola is focusing on the game in hand rather than looking back 12 months. The City manager said: “It was tough but we made an exceptional first game in Manchester and played a really good game here. “In general it was a good performance but it was not enough. You congratulate them and accept it and now one year later we are here. “We are not here for revenge. It is another opportunity. One day we will get it. We will get to the final and win it. It didn’t happen last season as we played Real Madrid and in this competition they know exactly what they have to do.” Guardiola admitted, however, last season’s loss was hard to stomach at the time. City controlled the tie in the second leg and looked on course for the final, leading 1-0 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate heading into injury time. Yet they dramatically capitulated, conceding twice in quick succession and going on to lose in extra time. It added to the catalogue of near misses experienced by the club since Guardiola took charge in 2016, which includes defeat in the 2021 final. Guardiola said: “Seven years ago we wanted to win the Champions League. Last season it was (like) the end of the world but here we are again. “Being stable is the most important thing. The important thing is we are trying to get better every year. We were prepared last year too. We are the same manager, mainly the same players but completely different games. “The difference is the second leg is at home and everything will be decided in Manchester.” Unlike Guardiola, midfielder Rodri admitted revenge was on his mind. The Spanish midfielder said: “Football gives you the option to have revenge. “We have the philosophy you can always learn from past experiences. We did a great two games but football is like this and we didn’t go through. “We will fight again. We will try to learn from what we did bad in that moment.” City are without defender Nathan Ake after the Netherlands international suffered a calf injury in Saturday’s Premier League victory over Leeds.

Esme Morgan pleads for patience and politeness from England’s autograph hunters
England defender Esme Morgan has urged critics to empathise with players who have the desire, but no longer the capacity, to meet every autograph hopeful amid growing concern that a minority of fans feel overly entitled to their time. Morgan’s fellow Lioness, Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps, this week posted on Instagram after she was tagged in a post-match comment by a parent who claimed the award-winner was “far too busy and important to stop for her fans these days”, admitting she found the accusation “hurtful” when she had taken time to meet as many as she could. It is easy for Morgan, who was at the age of five already a Manchester City season-ticket holder, to put herself in the shoes of supporters hoping for a post-match meeting with an idol. She has also witnessed popular team-mates like Chloe Kelly become upset after being unfairly criticised for not getting to everyone – when the reason can sometimes be as straightforward as needing to board a bus. Morgan said: “You can’t please everyone and you always remember that one person who wasn’t happy with you as opposed to all the people whose day you made and they were really grateful. “We love being able to go over and make someone’s day and see how excited people get but with the growth of the game now it’s just not really realistic and feasible for us to get round and see everyone. “It’s difficult when sometimes maybe some fans feel like the expectation is that they’re going to get to meet you and in years gone by that might have been an option, not as many fans were coming to the games so you might be able to get round everyone. “It is really hard because I’m sure at that age I would have been disappointed and so gutted that I was so close to meeting one of my heroes, but the growth of the game now means there’s just so many more people interested and so many more people come to the games and want to meet people that it’s just not possible for us to get round it all. Sometimes when you go around the edge of the crowd, you’re kind of getting screamed at and having things thrust in your face Esme Morgan “I think it’s nice that we can celebrate the interaction we have with fans but I think it’s difficult that, if it’s an expectation, players shouldn’t be made to feel bad about not getting round to everyone.” Players like Morgan have embraced other means of interaction – she is fond of engaging with fans on her increasingly popular TikTok account and through charity initiatives – while new systems like the one being trialled at Manchester City’s Joie Stadium this season aim to facilitate smoother and more quality connections between players and fans. ‘Autograph Alley’ is a dedicated meet-and-greet point where a smaller group of randomly selected supporters enjoy post-match encounters with players, something which Morgan says “is a lot nicer for us actually because it’s a much calmer situation and atmosphere.” She added: “You can spend a little bit more time chatting to people because not everyone is sort of screaming or going a bit crazy around you. Sometimes when you go around the edge of the crowd, you’re kind of getting screamed at and having things thrust in your face.” Those still hoping to snag an England player’s signature would do well to take a cue from young Morgan herself. A little politeness, she said, goes a long way. She added: “When I first started coming to City’s women’s matches I was just a kid in the crowd wanting to meet everyone. But I always felt like my manners were good and I’d always say please and thank you and things like that and sometimes I think that can be lost and that’s one of those things where it’s not a pleasant experience. “I think if clubs can put something in place, like City have, making it a lot more well-managed and a calmer experience then I think it’s much more pleasant for everybody.” Read More Record appearance maker Ben Youngs set for England swansong against Argentina Double payday – Tyson Fury set to face Oleksandr Usyk two days before Christmas Self-confessed ‘golf tragic’ Dan Carter keen to boost participation in Ireland England captain Owen Farrell: Online abuse of Tom Curry not acceptable Liverpool set for boost as Cody Gakpo in line to make return against Toulouse London Broncos set to lose out under rugby league’s new grading criteria
