Archaeologists are too scared to open up the tomb of China’s first emperor
Archaeologists are too scared to open up the tomb of China’s first emperor
Archaeologists are terrified to open the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor who has been buried for 2,200 years. The tomb of Qin Shu Huang, who ruled from 221 BC to 210 BC, is guarded by a terracotta army of soldiers and horses. The discovery was found by farmers back in 1974 in the Shaanxi province of China. While archaeologists explored the area, they have never opened the tomb itself – and within good reason. According to IFL Science, not only do archaeologists believe it will cause damage, but there are rumours of deathly booby traps that could kill curious intruders. Writings by Chinese historian Sima Qian 100 years after Qin Shu Huang's death claim "Palaces and scenic towers for a hundred officials were constructed and the tomb was filled with rare artifacts and wonderful treasure." He continued: "Craftsmen were ordered to make crossbows and arrows primed to shoot at anyone who enters the tomb. Mercury was used to simulate the hundred rivers, the Yangtze and Yellow River, and the great sea, and set to flow mechanically." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Even if those alleged crossbows failed thousands of years later, there are still fears of liquid mercury seeping through the cracks. "Highly volatile mercury may be escaping through cracks, which developed in the structure over time, and our investigation supports ancient chronicle records on the tomb, which is believed never to have been opened/looted," one 2020 paper suggests, as per the publication. Scientists have reportedly toyed with the idea of using non-invasive techniques to open the tomb, however, they have not yet come to fruition. Have your say in our news democracy. Pep Guardiola seemingly fails to recognise Martin Brundle in awkward grid walk chat
Pep Guardiola seemingly failed to recognise Martin Brundle in an awkward grid walk interview on Sunday. The Manchester City manager was spotted at Silverstone ahead of the British Grand Prix but appeared less than keen for a chat with the Sky Sports presenter. “You’re looking at me slightly suspiciously,” Brundle said, as he approached Guardiola before congratulating him on an “amazing season”. The awkward interaction came on the same day that Cara Delevingne sparked backlash online for refusing to speak to Brundle.

Another boat got stuck in the Suez Canal and the internet couldn't cope
Another boat got stuck in the Suez Canal and the internet couldn't cope
Another boat got stuck in the Suez Canal in Egypt, sparking a whole host of memes about the situation online. The Suez Canal is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world, with approximately 30 per cent of the world’s shipping container volume passing through it, meaning that any boat that gets stuck there can cause a huge ripple effect on the delivery of goods worldwide. This impact was demonstrated in March 2021, when the infamous container ship, Ever Given, blocked the canal for six days after running aground. Now, the busy canal has been blocked by the grounded Xin Hai Tong 23 ship – a 189 metre-long Hong Kong-flagged carrier, according to Leth Shipping Agency. Compared to the Ever Given, the ship was freed relatively quickly by two tugs, though, at one point, there are believed to have been four vessels stuck behind it. News that another ship had temporarily been stuck in the canal was enough to set social media users off with some hilarious memes and reactions. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter With the Suez Canal around 200 metres wide at its narrowest point, another simply asked: “Nas anyone thought of making the Suez Canal a bit bigger?” Someone else joked: “The Suez Canal holding yet another boat in its warm embrace & you are waiting for a text back that is never going to come.” Have your say in our news democracy.
