Fiorentina aim to take out frustration on West Ham in Conference League final
Fiorentina aim to take out frustration on West Ham in Conference League final
Fiorentina will look to take their Coppa Italia frustrations out on West Ham in next week’s Europa Conference League final. The Viola, seeking a first major trophy since 2001, have reached two finals this season but missed their first opportunity to end that wait for silverware when they were beaten 2-1 by Inter Milan last week, with Lautaro Martinez’s brace cancelling out an early Nicolas Gonzalez strike. That has added to Fiorentina’s motivation going into Wednesday’s final against the Hammers in Prague on Wednesday. Goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano, speaking to Sky Sports Italia at a media day on Thursday, said: “We must face all games in the best way knowing that the final is very important for us and the city. It’s the game of the season in Prague. “It will be different from the Coppa Italia final. We’ll face a different opponent. But we played a great game against Inter and I am sure the same will happen with West Ham. This is our certainty, we’ll give our all to win the trophy.” Coach Vincenzo Italiano said the key to success would be cutting out the mistakes that cost Fiorentina against Inter. “We’ve had a great season, and we deserved the chance to play for this trophy, we are aware of our strength but we know that every error makes the difference in a final,” said Italiano. “Every detail matters and we want to give joy to our fans.” Fiorentina sit ninth in Serie A going into their final league fixture away to Sassuolo on Friday night, before all attention turns to West Ham. Asked about David Moyes’ side, Italiano said: “They haven’t done well in the league, but they have a very competitive team with top-class players and a competent coach. We must focus on ourselves and be free in our minds.” For last week’s goalscorer Gonzalez, losing to Inter is not the only disappointment he has endured this season. The 25-year-old midfielder has been capped 22 times by Argentina but missed out on their World Cup squad, watching on from home as his team-mates lifted the trophy in Qatar. Wednesday’s final gives him a much-needed opportunity to win a medal himself. “We are experiencing so many emotions, I am happy to have reached two finals,” he said. “We lost the first one, but now there is another big game and we want to win. “Some things hurt me last year, especially not going to the World Cup. I wasn’t fit, but some thought it was a fake injury. I never did it, I always want to be 100 per cent when I play football. We have 90 minutes and we want to make the difference.”

Biden makes fresh call for assault weapon ban as he marks Uvalde anniversary in emotional speech
Biden makes fresh call for assault weapon ban as he marks Uvalde anniversary in emotional speech
Joe Biden has made a fresh call for the banning of AR-15 assault weapons as he marked the one-year anniversary of the Uvalde mass shooting. A gunman murdered 19 students and two teachers at the Robb Elementary School in the Texas city last May, with police heavily criticised for their slow response in taking down the shooter. Mr Biden, who was joined by first lady Dr Jill Biden for the speech, said that at the scene of each mass shooting he attended, he was told the same thing by the families of victims. “At each place, you hear the same message ‘Do something, for God’s sake do something,’” he said. “We did something afterwards but not nearly enough. We still need to ban, in my view, AR-15 assault weapons once again, you know they have been used time and again in mass killings of innocent children and people.” And Mr Biden, who visited Uvalde after the shooting, called on politicians to do more to end the gun crisis in the United States. “We can’t end this epidemic until Congress passes some common sense gun safety laws... How many more parents will live their worst nightmare,” he said. The president, who has lost two children of his own, told the families that he realised that the anniversary represented a “really tough day” for them. “Remembering is important but it is also painful,” said the president, who was surrounded by a lit candle for each victim of the mass shooting. “A year of missed birthdays, school plays and soccer games, just that smile. A year of everyday joys gone forever.” A criminal investigation into the actions of law enforcement reaction to the shooting remains underway in Texas, where it is the worst school shooting in the state’s history. A report by state lawmakers concluded that nearly 400 officers from federal, state and local agencies responded to the school but that those heavily-armed officers waited an hour to confront and kill the 18-year-old gunman. The report accused Uvalde police of failing “to prioritize saving innocent lives over their own safety.” Mr Biden has now made more than 70 unanswered calls for Congress to take action and ban assault weapons, which are commonly used in mass shootings in the country. It’s a demand he has given lawmakers dozens of times since entering office in 2021. Within his first two years in office, there have been roughly 1,400 mass shootings. He has referenced a federal ban on assault weapons, called on Congress to renew an assault weapons ban or pledged that his Democratic allies will do so roughly 70 times since entering office, according to The Independent’s March 2023 review of his public statements and remarks via Factba.se. Christian conservatives are accusing Cardi B of 'blasphemy' and being in the illuminati
Cardi B has showcased a new hairstyle, and some have accused the singer of ‘blasphemy’. The Grammy-winner unveiled a new look showing colourful crosses on her long blonde hair, with the caption “LET ME POP IT OFF !” and fans loved it, with the post racking up over 4 million likes. One fan commented: “Love this look”. “You look gorgeous,” wrote another. However, some were less than impressed with the rapper’s new style, with one Christian accusing the singer of ‘blasphemy’. “Stop blaspheming God and Jesus Christ,” they wrote. Another said, “y’all worship the devil” “Disrespecting the cross will not save your soul. Get right with Jesus now whilst he can still be found. Time is running out,” said another user. Another wrote: “Beware of illuminati”. This isn’t the first time Cardi B has upset conservatives. The release of her song 'WAP' with Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, upset many for its explicit lyrics. At the time, Republican congressional candidate James P. Bradley wrote: “Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion are what happens when children are raised without God and without a strong father figure.” Ben Shapiro, a conservative political commentator also expressed disgust at the chart-topping song. “This is what the feminist movement was all about. It’s not really about women being treated as independent, full-rounded human beings.” He added, “And if you say anything different you’re a misogynist.” However, the star seemed unbothered but conservative’s reactions, tweeting: “I can’t believe conservatives soo mad about WAP.” And she’s probably thinking the same now. Tories have already confirmed if there will be an extra bank holiday if Lionesses win the World Cup
Tories have already confirmed if there will be an extra bank holiday if Lionesses win the World Cup
The government has ruled out an extra bank holiday if the Lionesses win the Women's World Cup this Sunday. After the Lionesses beat Australia 3-1 in the semi-final yesterday, they became the first English women's football side to reach a World Cup final. They will face Spain this weekend and if they win, they will become the first England team to win a World Cup since 1966. But there are "no plans" for an extra day off if the Lionesses secure a famous victory, the government said. Asked if there could be a change of heart this time around, a government spokesperson told the BBC: "We congratulate the Lionesses on their fantastic achievement in getting to the Women's World Cup final. "The current pattern of public and bank holidays is well established and there are no plans to change this." In a later statement, a government spokesperson added: "Winning the World Cup would be a massive moment for the country and make no mistake we'll find the right way to celebrate. "As Sarina Wiegman herself has said, the first thing to do is focus on the final and the whole country will be rooting for the Lionesses this weekend". There has never been an extra bank holiday held in the UK to mark a sporting occasion despite multiple appeals, including calls for an extra day off in the run-up to the Lionesses' Euros win in 2022, and a petition calling for a bank holiday in the event the men's team won Euro 2020. This is because of money. It is not exactly clear how much it would cost but a 2010 a House of Commons library report said an extra holiday would cost £2.9bn, and both the Bank of England and Office of Budget Responsibility say it negatively impacts growth. Nevertheless, other countries sometimes declare bank holidays for sporting wins. Argentina got a day off last year after winning the men's World Cup. Panama declared a national holiday in 2017 for qualifying for the World Cup for the first time and Saudi Arabia held one for beating Argentina in last year's group stages. Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had called for a bank holiday there if his team won the cup. Meanwhile, there is some support for an extra holiday in the UK. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer backed calls for an extra bank holiday after the Lionesses won the semi-final. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey also backed the call, describing the England team an "inspiration" and saying a final win would "absolutely" deserve to be marked with a bank holiday. Regardless of the extra bank holiday or not, if the Lionesses win it will be a cracker of a day. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy.
