Former Sunderland and Ipswich striker Marcus Stewart feels both his old clubs can put themselves in the Sky Bet Championship promotion picture this season. The Mackems reached the play-offs last season, losing out to Luton, while Ipswich came up from Sky Bet League One. Sunderland host Ipswich at the Stadium of Light for their Championship opener on Sunday, with the televised fixture set to support the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. A programme of activity is scheduled to raise awareness for motor neurone disease and help generate donations, including a pre-match talk-in with Stewart, whose own diagnosis came after 12 months of testing and was revealed in September last year. Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray was Stewart’s captain when at Ipswich, while another former Town team-mate Mark Venus is assistant head coach. Stewart played for Sunderland between 2002 and 2005, helping Mick McCarthy’s side win promotion to the Premier League in his final season. It is a target which Stewart feels Mowbray’s men can also now have in their sights once again. “Sunderland pushed on last year and got into the play-offs, probably unexpectedly with a young squad,” Stewart told the PA news agency. “They have added a bit of experience with summer signings like Bradley Dack, so I expect them to be up there again. “It is probably a different kind of pressure they have now, because that expectancy level has gone up a bit. “The fans there are passionate, ruthless and brilliant all in one. If you are not pulling your weight, they will let you know about it – but on the flip side, if you are doing brilliant, then they are the best fans in the world. “You have got to be able to handle the pressure up there, the good and bad times which every player gets during the season. “But Tony is a calm man and will take everything as it comes. He will not get too excited and not get too down when results are going well or bad for them, which will happen during the season. “It is just how to get through those spells (of bad results), which will happen, and then promotion is on the cards.” Ipswich have also supported Stewart’s fundraising efforts, making donations from a new kit launch in July, which was the inspired by Suffolk club’s shirt in the 1999-2000 promotion campaign. It is a life-shortening disease and there is no cure. Although it will progress, symptoms can be managed to achieve the best possible quality of life. Currently head of player development at National League South club Yeovil, another of his former clubs, Stewart, supported by his wife Louise, hopes to continue to front charity campaigns while he is able. In May, Bristol Rovers hosted a charity match between a South West Legends side and an All-Star XI, with the weekend’s events raising a grand total of just over £110,000. Stewart’s family and friends will also be undertaking the #TEAMSTEWART254 Cycle Challenge in October, which will see fundraisers travel over 900km to seven of his former clubs. This year’s Sidemen match will take place on Saturday, September 9. A kick-off time has yet to be confirmed, but it’s expected to be at 3pm. Where is it being held? The 2023 match will take place at 62,500-capacity London Stadium in Stratford, London. Given the success of last year, it’s not surprising to see the event take place in a bigger venue. The majority of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad have agreed to end their boycott after “profound changes” to the Spanish football federation (RFEF) were promised, according to National Sports Council (CSD) president Victor Francos. A decision was reached in the early hours of Wednesday morning following a lengthy meeting between the players, RFEF officials and the CSD in a hotel in Oliva. Fifteen players of the group from this summer’s tournament were on Monday named in new head coach Montse Tome’s squad for the Nations League encounters with Sweden and Switzerland. But 21 of the 23-player contingent had already stated they would not play for their country again until major changes had occurred within the RFEF, in the wake of former president Luis Rubiales kissing Spain forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the medal ceremony in Australia. Later on Wednesday, the Spanish football federation appeared to clarify the “profound changes” alluded to by Francos. A lengthy statement read: “The RFEF is aware of the absolute need to start a new stage and close the institutional crisis that opened after the national team’s victory in the World Cup. “The Federation wants to show its support to all the internationals who are going through these unwanted circumstances; and reiterates its apologies for what happened after the World Cup victory to each of them and, in particular, to Jenni Hermoso, immersed in a situation that she did not create. We will always support them. “It is important to point out, given the events of the last few hours, that at no time has it been the intention of the RFEF to provide more noise and pressure on the players.” The statement added: “During the last few days we have reiterated our public commitment to make structural changes to begin this new, absolutely necessary stage that respects criteria of good governance, transparency and equality. “We understand that the players need to feel that the Federation is their home, a safe environment where they can show their professionalism and sporting quality while displaying the privilege of representing Spain. “The steps taken so far by the current leadership of the RFEF have always sought this objective. However, we recognise that until yesterday we have not managed to create a climate of trust with the internationals. “We have accelerated the changes planned by the Federation and we have communicated this decision to both the CSD and the international players. “Spanish football deserves absolute recognition, and all of us who are part of it must unite to achieve it.” The statement comes following the possible threat of sanctions to the squad for refusing to play for their country. “We’ve had several meetings that were conducted in an extremely cordial atmosphere in which people were able to speak freely,” Francos said, according to Spanish sports newspaper AS, earlier on Wednesday. “We covered all issues. In terms of conclusions: firstly, we’ve reached a series of agreements that will be signed tomorrow by the RFEF and the CSD. “Furthermore, a mixed commission will be created involving three parties – the federation, the CSD and the players – to monitor the (implementation) of those agreements, which are related to the development of Spain’s sports law in terms of gender policies, pay equality and furthering the infrastructure of women’s sport. “The players also conveyed to us the need to make profound changes (in personnel at the RFEF). These changes are to happen immediately, and will be announced by the RFEF.” The players had reluctantly turned up for duty on Tuesday amid talk of fines or suspension under Spanish sports law for “unjustified lack of attendance”, with Hermoso accusing the RFEF of intimidation in her own statement on Tuesday. Goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez also answered “no” when asked by reporters if she was happy to be part of Tome’s squad when a group of Madrid-based players met at a hotel in the Spanish capital before they travelled to their nation’s training base near Valencia. However, lengthy talks between the players, RFEF and CSD officials resulted in the boycott ending, although two players will leave the camp ahead of Friday’s match in Sweden. The RFEF also confirmed the men’s and women’s Spanish national teams would now share a single logo and branding – Seleccion Espanola de Futbol – translating to ‘Spanish national team’. Paramount has sparked backlash after reportedly posting and deleting a tweet about Robert De Niro's character in Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Twitter/X account @DocNoirII posted a still from the movie of Robert De Niro's character William Hale wearing large goggles with the caption "this was crazy". Killers of the Flower Moon follows the true story of the Osage nation who were murdered by Hale and his nephews Ernest and Bryan Burkhart due to the oil found under the land. The reason for De Niro being dressed in large goggles is because he is supposed to resemble an owl, which symbolises death for the Osage people. The official Paramount Pictures account allegedly replied to the original tweet saying "you know he had to do it to 'em", with the sunglasses emoji - likely referring to the goggles worn by De Niro. However, it is unsurprising that many have taken the comment to imply that Hale had to murder the Osage people, understandably causing outrage by the offensive nature of the tweet. Even Lily Gladstone, who played Mollie Kyle, and grew up on the reservation of the Blackfeet Nation, expressed her anger at the thoughtless response from Paramount, who distributed the film: One user called Paramount's response "horrific": Another called it "tone deaf": Whilst most expressed pure disbelief at the comment: Although Paramount deleted the tweet, they have not issued a statement or apology. An armoured train carrying North Korean leader Kim Jong-un arrived in Russia, the country’s state news agency reported today. The train crossed the Khasan station in “an atmosphere of absolute secrecy” this morning, Russian news agency Interfax reported, citing footage from Rossiya-1 TV state channel. Khasan is a small settlement in Russia’s Far East and the tripoint where the borders for Russia, China and North Korea converge. Western intelligence agencies expect the two to discuss North Korea supplying weapons and ammunition to support Russia’s war machine in Ukraine. South Korean media, citing government sources, said that the train left the North Korean capital on Sunday evening and that the summit would likely be held today or tomorrow in Vladivostok – which is just 80 miles from the Russia-North Korea border. Meanwhile, Ukraine has made gains on the frontline in the east and south, Kyiv has claimed as it seeks to put Russia’s forces on the run. Ukrainian troops near the frontline town of Avdiivka took advantage of Russian forces focusing on to advance and capture part of the village of Opytne to the south, the head of the local military administration said.
